I haven't seen HDR10 on SC joints but aside from the compression issues they looked great.
The simple fact of the matter is that DV is an optional format on UHD disc, NOT a mandatory standard, so it was always going to be deployed on an ad hoc basis.

Yep. I’ve never watched an HDR10 presentation wishing it was in DV.

Same here, apart from the StudioCanal-encoded Rambos and that's only because of how DV mollifies the abysmal compression on their other discs, not because of the tone mapping or BETAH COLEURS or whatever.

Well your display doesn't need it. I think it'll be less important as displays progress. Hell even the new Hisense almost reaches 1000 nits.

DV is being contested by studios because they don't like the proprietary costs Dolby is asking for, which is why they came up with HDR10+.

  • And obviously, there is nothing about the UK version, we should wait for WB to launch the cover of the UK to see if it says the same.

I'd like to know if anyone heard a rumor about Dolby or HDR10 +. I was surprised when I saw it
The specs for the BD read DTS HD MA audio, so that should mean it's a new disc.

Samsung came up with it, at least the metadata part since the HDR10 core is still Dolby tech (and HDR10+ is a lot less capable than their marketers were babbling about), but HDR10+ still has proprietary fees. The pay structure is different than Dolby Vision, but it's absolutely not free.

I thought it included Atmos. I’m not complaining but I was sure it had an Atmos track.

'They' didn't really come up with though, it was more Samsung and Fox who wanted to go their own way and it still costs "proprietary" money to join the 10+ crowd, funnily enough. Not as much as Dolby I'm sure, but a good few thou nonetheless.

Now that the authoring workflows are in place we're seeing more 10+ content from studios other than Fox, the quirky thing is that of those other 10+ adopters (Warners, Uni and Lionsgate) several titles have been/are coming out with both DV and 10+ on one disc. Time will tell if DV quietly gets dropped on disc although the actual mastering level application of DV is as prevalent as ever, it really is the de facto standard for HDR content creation amongst the major studios and providers like Netflix (who will literally not accept HDR content in HDR10).

Putting it on disc is more of an arseache than putting it in a single transport stream for OTT delivery, I've been told that even the MEL version can be a **** to author never mind the FEL version, so I guess we'll see how the studios really value us in the months and years ahead. Using DV will imply a premium product and some people will respond to that, but if even DV-on-disc stalwarts like Paramount and Lionsgate start scaling it back then will people start to back away from UHD disc and move over to streaming where DV is ubiquitous? Hmmm.

Sadly they never mentioned any Atmos and I would have liked the option with a 7.1 core but also a MONO PCM audio track

Not asking for much

never owned the UK DVD, imported US one. Then again US Blu.
Not sure why I never watched shorter cut.

The 5.1 audio of the new 4K master is the same old clumsy 5.1 remix, with all its mistakes.

What kind of mistakes? I’m not familiar with the existing 5.1 track.

It amazes me how cheap some studios are recycling audio mixes from the late 1990's and passing them as "new audio restoration" like Warner Bros. did with the 2001 ASO UHD BD.

Well, they did also provide an additional track based on the original theatrical audio from 1968.

Eh? One 5.1 track is from the 70mm mix and the other 5.1 IS a new mix, it's not the same one as was featured on Warners' old BD of 2001.
