I really don't think Pikachu can beat it. IF Endgame does 50% drops weekend-to-weekend that would mean by the time Pikachu comes out Endgame will only do 89 million for the weekend (if my math is right and that's a big IF). Which means Endgame will end up making just a bit more domestically that Infinity War. Just a bit. And I don't see Endgame doing the same box office as Black Panther. I think Endgame will do WAY, WAY more than that. And to do it will have to have stronger numbers than what you're suggesting. Which means steamrolling over Pikachu's a--. Among others. But even it does only $89 million on the 3rd weekend that will probably still be enough to over Pikachu.

I agree with you on Pikachu, but I don't agree with you on Godzilla. Godzillas does have the brand and recognition, but it has never been some "huge" performer at the box office. The last one only did $200 million domestically. As for the first "event" film of the summer, you're seeing it now. There won't be another one like this. Not by a county mile.

It may open at no. 1, but I'm still not sure about that. It might be a tall order for it to beat Endgame for the weekend. The last Godzilla opened at the box office to about $90 million dollars and the opening weekend for the '98 one was only around $44 million and it ended up with around $136 million domestically. The last Godzilla improved box office wise against the '98 one, but not by any huge measure. Domestically, anyway. Which makes me think modern audiences are not keen on Godzilla as they once were. EVERYONE loves these Marvel movies it seems. Today's box office will tell us a lot.

Your math is right and Pikachu opening to more than $89M domestically is more than possible.

Agreed. Endgame and Aquaman are very different approaches to big CGI fights, and Endgame is definitely far better at pulling it off. I couldn't follow anything in the Aquaman final fight.

I actually see Pikachu opening under $89M myself. I see its opening weekend falling into the $70-80M range, especially if Endgame is still making $80M+ that weekend. I think Aladdin is the first film that will definitely dethrone Endgame as number one. Pikachu is a bit more of an unknown in that regard. It'll probably open at number two, especially since Pikachu will have no premium format screens (Pikachu will not be in IMAX or Dolby Vision).

Same. For me to be invested in the action I have to like the characters and I didn't like anyone from Aquaman. It was the same for Captain Marvel.

Didn't know about it not having premium formats, I could've sworn it was getting Dolby but I guess not. In that case nevermind, it probably won't unseat Endgame. But it'll come close depending on how Endgame holds in its second weekend; seems like all bets are off in terms of how high this thing can climb.

Yeah I've seen Dolbys be YMMV, if Endgame is still filling seats then they may not see a need to switch to Pikachu. IMAX tends to be much stricter on replacing movies when their windows expire.
