Only 30 minutes of NTTD was filmed in 15/70 IMAX. LOL - that's (10) 1000 feet Kodak 65mm reels. Each reel produces 3 minutes.

That's still a good amount if you ask me. Not every scene has to be shot on IMAX film, especially when the cameras themselves are loud and weigh like a dump truck.

Not when the movie's runtime is 2h 43m. 18%

Loud yes but they have gotten much smaller:

Those are two IMAX 15/70 cameras (under the silver blankets) on the front of the car.

I'd like more IMAX footage as much as the other guy, but it all comes down to other things... most importantly how you're using the cameras to tell the story. Plus, there's the cost of the cameras themselves, the price of shooting on 65mm film, etc.

I dunno. I'm curious to see how Fukunaga and Sandgren used IMAX for the film. I hope it makes sense based on the sequences in which they were used.

The cost to shoot in IMAX 15/70 is VERY high. $15,000 rental fee per week per camera. The 65mm film, from Kodak runs $1003 for a 500 foot roll (1.5 minutes of shooting time) and $2007 for a 1000 foot roll (3 minutes of shooting time). They will shoot probably 4X more film than what makes it into the movie. Then you have the cost of film processing for the dallies which is VERY expensive as only Kodak can do it which involves turning the negative film into positive film - same 65mm roll costs plus processing.

The prints are also expensive. It's why IMAX has shifted from 15/70 film to Digital. A 40 minute print was $90,000. 3D 15/70 IMAX = 2 prints so that would be $180,000. These prices are from 10+ years ago. IMO, a 2 hour 15/70 IMAX print would be $300,000 today if not more.

So they spent between $500,000 and $1 million to shoot in 15/70 IMAX for 30 minutes run time and no one outside of the production will ever see it.

It's a gimmick to get people to spend $20 for a Digital IMAX ticket instead of $12 for a regular ticket.

FILMED IN IMAX!

So is it safe to say that we'll never see a movie filmed entirely on 15/70 IMAX film?

I strongly doubt it. But with Hollywood . . . Never Say Never.

Each year there are fewer and fewer IMAX 15/70 capable movie theaters. TENET which had a 2H 30M runtime of which 50% to 60% was IMAX 15/70 footage. WB had 8 prints made. Each print probably cost around $400,000.

Unknown how the letterbox 5 perf 65mm portions affects the cost of an IMAX print.

If it ever came to pass, IMO the run time would be around 90 minutes to keep the production costs down to bearable instead of insane.

100% Filmed with IMAX cameras!

Digital IMAX cameras that is.

Smithsonian will be making an announcement today, hopefully No Time To Die related.

I already ordered tickets to see NTTD at King of Prussia, but I wouldn't mind seeing it again on full 1.43:1 projection at the Smithsonian.

That, and Dune. The Lockheed and the Airbus were going to be my options to see a full IMAX film there.

Smithsonian is hours away from King of Prussia, isn't it?

Is the Franklin Institute in Philly showing any IMAX movies yet?

I'm actually in the DMV area so the Smithsonian venues are closer to me than King of Prussia.

Do you really not have an IMAX as good as KOP closer to you?

Got official word that there are no IMAX film prints of No Time to Die at all. But theaters with laser projectors and appropriate aspect ratio screens will have the 40 minutes of IMAX scenes in 1:43.

Lockheed Martin IMAX is closed due to renovations at the Air and Space Museum

No word on whether NTTD will show at Airbus, but Venom 2's limited run might be a good sign. Hope to see Dune there.

I get the pandemic changed things but it's very depressing to see a movie with legit IMAX footage not used to their full advantage with 70mm prints.

I'm always confused about the formats. Do you know if the King of Prussia IMAX will show NTTD with the expanded aspect ratio?

I believe prints weren't due pre COVID either. Guess post production was just too down to the wire (which was also partly why First Man didn't get any it seems)
