Being filmed in 5K doesn't matter, what matters is what resolution it was mastered in, and I don't believe this information has been made public for The Hobbit. Prometheus was also shot on the same 5K cameras but the final master was 2K, due to the prohibitive cost of doing digital effects at a higher resolution, and I imagine The Hobbit will be the same way, especially based on how crummy the trailer looked in 15/70 IMAX. I'm not even sure the digital cinema spec supports showing 3D at 4K.

Prometheus looks SO bad! I hope the Hobbit doesn't look the same.
Don't get me wrong. She's a good movie and all. But I won't be watching it many times because of the way it looks. I don't have motionflow on my telle, and that's what it looked like! I won't be catching The Hobbit in theatres however. If I had a local IMAX you could bet I'd see ten times as many movies as I do, but I don't. How will this HFR translate to the home release? Will I need a special telle? |

I was just comparing cause I thought they were both shot with those Red camera's or whatever. I may be wrong. Anyway, it's an IMAX thread, so I should stop whining about blu-ray movies and my five year old television. |

I didnt know that, thats a real bummer. It does give me hope though that the director is Peter Jackson and really cares about that kind of stuff, I know its ultimately left up to the studio but if theyre putting all that time and money into it too shoot in 5k with 48 3d cameras, HFR and atmos, we have a better chance of getting a 4k master than with a movie lik Prometheus or any other movie for that matter. If was going to be done, theres no beter odds of it happening on this movie IMO.

Found this on another forum, dont know if its true or not but its interesting if it is:,"An IMB (integrated media block) is also required for 4K 3D or HFR 2D (the hobbit is not being released in HFR 2D), a projector without an IMB can play 4k or 2K 3D but for presentations beyond that will need an IMB. Right now 4K HFR 3D is beyond the capacity of an IMB and the file size of a 3 hr feature in 4K HFR 3D would exceed the capacity of harddrives certified with the IMB system, so a solution is not in the immediate offing."
......Does that mean its theoretically possible that the 2d version could be mastered in 4K? Please, anybody, PM me or if you post an answer, or see a post/link about what this will be mastered in please let me know and I will do the same. Quote:

Finally found my answer, thought you guys might want to know the only theaters that will play the hobbit in 4k resolution are imax 3d and imax hfr 3d. there are only 58 theaters in the US that are playing it in IMAX HFR 3d, meaning also only 58 theaters playing the hobbit with a 4k master. Im pretty sure no theaters are playing IMax HFR 3d with a 4k master and dolby atmos, I dont think the IMAX theaters use dolby atmos but I could be wrong on that part. so the only theater in Wa state that is playing it in 4k imax hfr 3d is in bellvue at the lincoln square cinemas which has a 65 ft wide screen, the only theater in WA state playing it in Dolby atmos which is in 2k on an 80ft screen in dolby 3d with hfr on 4k christie projectors is at the cinetopia in vancouver wa.

![]() Not to burst your bubble but that does not mean that The Hobbit was mastered in 4K. Because it wasn’t. ![]() Even if the IMAX theaters you listed are extraordinarily unique in that they are now using two synchronized 4K projectors (instead of thee old Christie 2K set-up) and have two IMBs capable of streaming 500 Mbps per projector through a dual Gigabit Ethernet interface easily capable of driving 48 fps/eye, the original DSM has 2K native resolution…. so I’m told by someone related to the production as of Dec. 11, 2012, 10:15 P.M. local Pacific time, at approximately the time of this post. But, ya never know, perhaps you are better informed. ![]() Lurkers from other sites are welcome to use the above information without giving due credit of course. There is a commercial installation (non-IMAX venue) in Houston which, the projector system as currently configured, can show 4K 3D 24fps….actually up to 30fps/eye. With an upgrade, I think that one could accomplish without an inordinate amount of trouble, 4K 3D 48 fps…if the manufacturer were so inclined. The server is already capable of playing back content at 1,000 Megabits per second, which is twice the current DCI Mbps rate specification. |

The IMAX thing does bring up an interesting side note, now that IMAX has a contract with Barco, do you know if they have any intention to install any dual Barco 4K projectors at any of their digital IMAX venues?
It would seem the logical/honorable thing to do in order to carry on the real IMAX (15/70) tradition for BIG PICTURE-BIG RESOLUTION digital 3D exhibition. ![]() |

No, what that means is that it translates into currently supporting 4K stereo 3D frame rates of 30 fps, as I’ve already mentioned, and up to 120 fps for 2K content…as demoed at the last GSCA conference.
