So this Daredevil 'mastered for OLED' bit is basically an LG publicity drive? Figures.

I watched all of Daredevil in 4K this weekend and thought it looked great. I couldn't tell any issues with shadow details or contrast that would indicate I was being cheated at the expense of OLED owners.

If you have a good eye, then I’d say it was not surprisingly, in actuality, ‘mastered for LCD’ like is commonly done with all home deliverables for the reasons described on the last page.

Based upon spectre’s observation, yes, it appears that way. Any knowledgeable technician that masters content at a major Hollywood post house is aware through experience that due to the LCD consumer ecosystem, OLED is too black ‘out of the box’.

Heck, one of the most common inquiries to the support staff of professional OLED manufacturers (no matter what brand) is exactly how (brightness control?), with a particular model, is it best to raise the black level on a delivered pure black OLED reference monitor….in order to expressly avoid the *invariable redo* situation described in post #4898 on the last page, i.e. otherwise you’ll end up 'grading up' the shadow detail too much, so when seen on an LCD tv, like those in the homes of consumers, they will be too lifted.

Follow-up note to the bottom of the whimsical, yet advanced informational post from last Sept. - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...rt#post9754213

namely regarding the benefit of Y”u”v” encoding for wide color gamut and high dynamic range images. The concept of which has now been published and is available for all to read in the April 2015 issue of the SMPTE…http://journal.smpte.org/content/124/3/37.refs - "Deploying Wide Color Gamut and High Dynamic Range in HD and UHD"

If they are perhaps one of them could snoop around the BDA and get back to us on anything they find.

I'll need to go back and watch an episode with that in mind and see if I notice anything different. From my perspective it didn't look any worse than any other tv show or blu-ray that has a lot of darkness and shadows.

Another interesting observation, I see in that thread as well people mentioning that their Amazon streaming app on their LG OLEDs doesn't have 4K content. I have an LG UB9500 series 4K and have watched a lot of 4K stuff on the Amazon app, it has its own little section. I just finished watching Orphan Black in UHD on Amazon.

Speaking of HDR. It looks like Tomorrowland is going to be the first feature to be mastered in Dolby Vision.

Geez Bails, Insider 2themax has recently been throwing out hints on your thread and I’ve been revealing precise bit depth and color space primary information months before - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...nt#post9737846 any official spec announcement at last Janurary’s CES…or even before the Blu-ray format extension video parameters liaison information became publically available by way of the HEVC working group JCT-VC.

Not to mention a very early purposeful hint as to the HDR ETOF which would be used….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...tf#post9754213

We can’t give you monthly status reports.

Ray, I see this as progress . At least you’re still not claiming that “Daredevil is graded for HDR per the comments by LLoyd, the Director of Photography”.

If LG and Netflix made a marketing event out of it, the Daredevil episode(s) probably looks purrrrty good on both OLED and LCD tvs. However, display technology physics still dictates Peter is being robbed to pay Paul. The question remains (for unbiased viewers with a critical eye who are not OLED (or LCD) fanboys)….who is Peter…..and who is Paul? Nevertheless, don’t expect the one being robbed to look like crap, it just won’t be as optimal as it could be.

And how much to raise it? Well, the answer is somewhere between 0.03 - 0.05 nits and that is dependent upon the clip-crush point of the particular OLED, as different displays can operate differently. The somewhere below 0.05 recommendation (rather than out-of-the-box pure black (0) is usually offered out as a rule of thumb because it is based upon EBU-Tech 3320 standard for Grade 1 monitors - https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/tech/tech3320.pdf

lol, well I guess we’ve beaten the mastering on/for OLED topic into the ground. Let’s see what else happened since I was in Vegas.

Finally o-fficial.

Zee fly on the wall knew and informed conscientious readers, or at least Vincent Teoh, so - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post10551333

Although since the time of that ^ post one month ago, regular readers will notice that Tomorrowland has since shifted down to middle 4th row of the features.

See Bails, there are hints and pearls all over the place, one just has to carefully read and give due diligence.

P.S.
Note to Carolyn….there is a long way from a DP “wanting” something and getting/achieving something expeditiously (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...l-chivo-694015 ). It’s never a given.

Yep. We've been very lucky to get the info that Penton et al have produced so far, but it's come at its own pace, we haven't just been given everything on a plate all at once, and sometimes we need to read between the lines a bit too.

I’m humbled with the publicly expressive acknowledgement. I truly am . The honor is mine, for you guys could be reading a plethora of other internet sites during your web surfing. All I can add is that even if everyone doesn't understand the postings or appreciate them at the time, for an example (2008)…
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...de#post1432708

and the information may take months or years (2011) https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...st#post4453123 ) to be proven true and accurate…. eventually, it all is.

The only way you will know if you have been "cheated" is to watch Daredevil on an OLED.
