Also after reading the new Goodfellas 4K UHD release review, that pretty much solidified for me on just sticking with blu ray.
Your not going to see as big a difference on older movies on UHD BD. HDR makes by far the biggest difference so it's going to favor the new releases as those are made with HDR in mind.

Can someone here answer a quick question on 4K blu-raydisc performance? How would a 4k blu-ray play on a Standard High Definition TV? I am eventually going to upgrade my TV, so I may want to stock up now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

UHD players lack analog (composite, S-video, Component RGB) outputs and L/R audio, so the best bets would be to invest in a HDMI to Composite/Analog converter to get it on your SD TV set to enjoy for now, or wait until you get the 4K screen and then you be able to get the proper equipment without any converters.

What's a Standard High Definition TV? Do you have a Standard Definition TV (480i/480p) or a High Definition TV (720p/1080i/1080p)?

I don't know for sure, but bear in mind that you'll need a UHD disc player in order to play a 4K UHD disc. There are actually only a handful of them available on the market with the cheapest one being around $200.

Maybe I stated what is already obvious to you... considering the price of a player, I'd get the TV first.

this wasn't your question, but...

A TV w/ a decent upscaler could make a Blu-ray look slightly better than an HD set. I just bought a 4k TV recently and if nothing else, I'm looking forward to seeing Blu-ray titles on a bigger screen. (I'm going from 47 to 65)
