I thought the 3D Blu-ray format meant that discs were designed to be playable in 2D as well as in 3D, but on the cover of Sony's World Cup Blu-ray (which I guess is 60Hz instead of 50 as well as 720p instead of 1080i) it says "Only Plays in 3D". How/why is that (instead of allowing 2D playback too)?

I was asked by several via PM to make a “Halloween themed” post.

Okay, (b.t.w. shark, you’ll love this one …good teasing potential for Bobby H.) –

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CARVE OUT A PUMPKIN …WITH A SHARP KNIFE OR A SEMI-AUTOMATIC HANDGUN? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGH8Af9Hdb0

^ The thing that creeps me out the most about that video clip is the guy’s commentary and his laugh at the very end.

Sony only has rights to the 3D footage.

I would have to ask a colleague to do some checking around to figure out who owns the 2D broadcast and video rights but there are FIFA World Cup DVDs online.

1. If you’ve got the time, might I suggest a small side trip a tad south to the Mount Vernon Visitors Center and make sure you catch “We Fight To Be Free”… http://visit.mountvernon.org/washing...ia_museums.cfm (Here’s some background in case you’re unfamiliar with the film….http://www.in70mm.com/news/2008/fight/index.htm)

or

2. Given it’s Halloween time and you may desire to be creeped out while hanging out in the coolest part of the city (Georgetown ), might I suggest a nightly viewing of The Exorcist staircase ….
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv...vies/exor1.htm

or

3. Find an art house in the environs which is showing oldie but goodie Chaplin flicks and tell us if you can identify any *time- travelers* ……http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/...news/#39879394

I was in DC during my kids spring break this year and visited Mt. Vernon. Awesome experience, although don't waste your money on the "National Treasure" tour (It wasn't my decision, my better half made me pay the $20). Oh well, it goes to a good cause.

Hopefully, shark is staying *connected* online to the “Penton and Denon Travel Services Guide”, which is a complementary feature of this thread.

That means...no charge Iceman.

Here’s a quick shout out to members of the SMPTE student chapter from Pasadena City College who attended some of Wednesday’s Tech sessions... http://www.smpte2010.org/program-guide

And also volunteered at the Expo. Thanks for the info tidbit about William Holden (The Bridge on the River Kwai) being a PCC alumnus, as I didn’t know that. Also good to see so much youthful enthusiasm for the technical aspects of both 2D and 3D.

In light of this recent interview concerning TRON which was posted on the web last week….http://www.collider.com/2010/10/28/s...ay-remastered/

I was asked by two members (via PM), if there is any behind-the-scenes mastering tidbit I could offer which is not elucidated in Director Steve Lisberger’s interview. All I can offer you is what I’ve already posted last September in this past exchange, which actually is mostly about Alien…..https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post3736563

Which reminds me, a couple weeks back or so, an apparent Agfa XT film (think- gone like the dinosaurs) aficionado, asked me either in a past PM which I now can’t locate (sorry ) or maybe it was posted in that main The Last of the Mohicans thread we have here, which I just don’t have time to search thru….a question about which scene(s) in that motion picture were captured on Agfa XT 320 stock?

Anyway, Agfa XT 320 was used in the cave scenes in order to render a different type of hue to the image. Kodak 5248 was used for the daylight scenes which were not light challenged and Kodak 96 for where lack of lighting was more an issue, like when the forest got dark, etc.

I’m normally more a football (English and American) fan but, I am enjoying baseball in this post season. Denon, are you a Giants fan?

I mean for me, heck, if the Angels and Dodgers didn’t make it to the World Series, next best thing, without a doubt is thee Giants . Plus, you can’t beat those picturesque aerial views of their waterfront stadium. Beautiful.

Penton,

Yes, huge Giants fan since I was a junior in high school (1986). I went to school about 20 minutes away from Candlestick and we would cut class whenever they had a Wednesday day game. We finally got caught and I thought my Dad was going to kill me, but he only asked me two questions: First, was it a good game? Second, who won?

I went to only five games this year, but two of them were against the Dodgers and the Giants won both games.

As for the World Series, I predicted the Giants in 6 games, so I'm not surprised they lost tonight. Sanchez is hit-or-miss in big games and he missed again tonight. Bumgarner is a big game pitcher and I think they will win tomorrow night (fingers crossed). Hopefully they can win it in five...my heart can't stand the pressure!

Rally was great, 200,000+ people groovin' in the sun of DC. Didn't get to the steps from the EXORCIST, but DID get to Newseum (awesome), a quick blow through of the "downtown" Air&Space, and the next day a trip to the fabulous OTHER Air&Space.

Saw a shuttle, even if "only" the Enterprise. *Happy*

If you are a true Dodger fan you *hate* the Giants.

Best thing is if they lose, which at this point isn't looking too likely.

Back in the day, my Dad was a big Oriole fan. Thank goodness, before he completely lost his eyesight, I flew back East with my wife to personally escort him to Camden Yards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriole_...t_Camden_Yards) to take in a baseball game when Cal Ripken, Jr. was closing out his career with the O’s, as Dad had never been to Oriole Park (only the old Memorial Stadium).

It was a great experience I will never forget , as it made him so happy.

DenonCI , did you catch this commercial during one of the inning breaks?

It combines one of your favorite sports with Peter THX’s horn from hell …..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uInjMLb3lY

Peter THX, please see my previous post above.
And let me know if you plan to try out the stuff at the Playstation HQ on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBXZAkiLNvs

Some inside fun - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KChBGDzd8sY
Cause, for when you’re not checkin out the hotties and plan to engage in some of the Playstation Move offerings, I’ll be sure to bring my vuvuzela to help you concentrate, as I am a “true” vuvuzela fan.
