It really is tough to take a vacation when you are loaded with responsibilities, usually ends up being a nightmare upon the return. So I understand this well, hopefully Paid pops up here sometime in the next few weeks.

Thanks as always Penton for your insights!

OK Penton-Man, I checked out that link you posted on Bill's thread... and I was confused by this post.

On the RED_4K crop, the details of his shirt seem more... well, detailed... as does his chains than the EX1 resized.

On the RED 4K_Rescaled to 1080p, his shirt seemed more detailed, but the EX1_crop from 1080p seems to have a more "detailed" view of his chains.

Then I realized it could all be the difference in angle and lighting... not to mention the downconverting/upconverting done to each picture... which honestly makes it more difficult (in the pictures) to truly come up with a winner in my eyes. Can't wait to get home and check out a better view of the .mov file...

Alan, that's pretty much the conclusion I've reached, that without identical lighting/angle it's impossible to make a fair comparison

Well, in regards to home theater, I would only pay attention to the lower set (RED downsampled to 1080p side by side with EX1 native sized), if you’re into that sort of thing, i.e. looking at still images.

Keep in mind though that when people watch a movie, they look at dem moving pictures. For example, I recently saw some test clips of Panavision Genesis stuff running side by side with footage captured on Kodak 5219 with an Arri.

In terms of digital cinematography, a major hurdle that the Red One has to traverse is the fact that major motion picture folk are not ready to deal with its post workflow, i.e. de-Bayering time, data back-up, etc. They are much more comfortable in using a HDCAM SR tape and be done with it. Not to mention the relatively weak dynamic range of that particular camera.

After having seen Kodak Vision3 5219 stock footage in the DI suite, I’m thinking that film is not dead and that stock may just make a more significant difference in people’s home theater viewing experiences due to less needed DNR at the digital intermediate level than any one digital camera for the time being.

Anyway, the right-sided image sure aint bad for a camera that retails for about ¼ the amount of the other.

In fact, I’d probably try to get tickets to it if the venue had been anywhere else but Russia (a past bad experience with borsch).

Actually, I’ve taken the day off to visit a local pub that is showing the Chelsea/ Liverpool match today (in just about 2 1/2 hours from now).
Should be great fun.
I really have no affiliation with either team but, my gut feeling is that Chelsea will win despite the fact that I think Liverpool is the more deserving after having had finally watched Leg 1 from last week.

P.S.
I assume you know who one of the title sponsors of the Champions League is ?

Hey, b.t.w. – great news today with Paramount and There Will Be Blood.
Bob Elswit is one of the best D.P.s around. It should be a blind buy for many of you folks.

I was going to ask what you'll be doing with your free time now that 80% of the questions will be gone ("when is Paramount announcing"), but I can see you'll be spending it wisely...

Won't it be nice to no longer see questions like "Where is Paramount" ?

We can now all look forward to the *When the heck is Paramount coming out with xxxxx (my favorite movie)* questions.....which should start any hour now.

B.T.W., I'm kinda glad that Barcelona lost to Man U. as I still haven't forgiven Henry for leaving Arsenal.

Yes, it's all your fault for getting the Insiders on this digital camera thing !

Sheesh, that particular camera gets enough face time on the internet the way it is already. You should have seen their display(s) at NAB.

Don't get me started on the deficiencies of the RED One, the only reason people on a forum like this have even heard of it is because of tactics similar to the ones used by HD DVD fanatics and appealing to consumers (of which very few can afford the thing) who wil clamour for its use in all places, without realising how much extra work it will take, and the benefits of 4k over 1080p are very limited right now. How many people have heard of a Sony XDCAM EX1, not nearly as many who will know the RED One.
I have I agree that they've hyped the RED very efficiently, and it's totally not all that and a bag of chips.

Since you guys are seeing the one on the right as better, what are you using to make that determination?

Quote:
Anyway, the right-sided image sure aint bad for a camera that retails for about ¼ the amount of the other.
Absolutely not. I would buy it over the RED with that kind of result any day of the week. The differences are almost insignifigant

Quote:
In that picture the EX1 wins hands down for the 1080p crop, the RED One actually has better lighting, and still cant reproduce similar detail in the chains and the hair.
I'm watching on Sony's best-ever CRT monitor (original SRP $1600, no, I didn't pay that for it, thank you CRT clearances!), and the hair looked noticeably better on the left (RED)

Fox is putting it out overseas, just import it if Paramount doesn't match that release sched of Mel's first martyrdom/torture epic

I'm going to grab Gladiator from Japan if they don't put it out here.
