Wicky, you recently told me that WB's press site is something of a mess, could the "Beetlejuice" MSRP be a mistake?

Good! I'm hoping for an eventual "Penton-Man" decoder ring!

It is! Whoever did the animation was excellent!

Max (and sorry again Penton, I seem to keep doing this in your thread);
I'm hoping to go to see Indy IV there this Friday. Are tickets (4) easy enough to book in advance? Fridays listings don't show on their website until Wednesday.

And now they're creeping back to $34.99, hence my examples of Signs, The Recruit, and Gangs of New York.

These have the same list price as Pirates 3 and Enchanted. That doesn't make alot of sense. Of course, Fox has done this from the beginning, albeit even higher.

And speaking of David Fincher, did anyone see the trailer for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Cate Blanchett, Julia Ormand, Brad Pitt, etc.) at any showings of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?

Looked purty cool.

I know, I know.
Downloading even a short trailer in 1080p, is a royal pain in the arse given many people’s internet connections.

Forgive me.

Sure. You can scan at 12K if you like, till every single binary grain is covered with several pixels. But it's a futile excercise in excess and waste of ressources. What does not contribute to visible useful detail in the picture is unnecessary baggage. Scanning 6K is fine for a full res 4K final master. A 6K final master will not show more detail.

Depends on where you set the cutoff for the MTF. The reality is that nothing even remotely full res 4K reaches an interpositive or any release prints. And from there to the cinema screen it's yet another story.
Here's an article comparing MTF and limiting resolution (in lp/mm) of scanning at 8000dpi vs 4000dpi using Velvia transparency film (similar to 8K and 4K across the Full Aperture)

I saw that trailer Friday. That movie, and Don Cheadle's latest Traitor look really interesting to me.

CRANK - features excessive edge enhancement that was intentionally added by its filmmakers, but nets a 4 out of 10 rating due to its ugly appearance

I was there recently for a movie premiere (seriously, freebie tickets are brilliant...), it is still the best cinema I have ever been to. The rule used to be no food, drink or talking, (or macking!) but I haven't been on a normal night for a while so they may have relented.

I had heard the were showing the first three on the night before it opened using newly sourced print, but unfortunately I was unable to attend...
Four tickets booked for the Royal Circle, front for Friday morning.
Cheers Max!!

I'm all for 6K or 8K scanning of 35mm for 4K final masters. Remember the direct 1080p is as good as it gets controversy?

Do you have this for motion picture negative? Still frames are not the same as motion photography.

I was actually about to comment on Crank in the film grain thread. It's not my kind of film, and I never made any effort to see it until last night. I had heard many people say it was their reference video quality disc, and now I can see why. It's very sharp. But I can see why people who think it ought to look like film wouldn't like it.

My understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) is that it was shot on HD video cam, and it looks like it, it has that television-like immediacy, which I think was the directors intention. He wanted it to look like a video game instead of like a film.

Does anyone know whether the film was captured in 24p or 60i video though? Thinking about it, I assume it must have been 24p, but can anyone confirm that? Any other films using this sort of camera for movies, rather than documentaries etc?

Cheers, Nick

Same guy said Almost Famous (UK) was a 6. That movie should have been bottom tier.
