I disagree. I thought the original storyline was what made it so much fun to watch, and mainly because of how the political and socioeconomic conditions of the time were paralleled in the film, not to mention the strong religious and spiritual undertones. Granted, the special effects were awesome, but ultimately it was the story itself that made the picture so fascinating and unique.

You need to be a techo-junkie / cyber geek to fully appreciate the strong impact it has on people. In short, reality show junkies will not appreciate these movies. Some people just don't "get it". Their loss.

Any movie with a cult following can't be all that terrible. But you probably have to be a cult member to fully appreciate it - unless you convert.

Again, I disagree. I'm no "techno-junkie / cyber geek," yet I consider "Tron" to be one of the greatest visual displays in the history of cinema, as well as one of the finest overall films I've ever seen. But just because I'm a fan of the original movie, doesn't mean I automatically need to jump aboard the bandwagon for a sequel that not only looks questionable in terms of plot, but is also coming to us decades too late. I'm still going to see it, but I'm most likely going to walk out of the theater saying to myself "well, it was ok, but I don't know that it was worth $10," which is not the type of experience I want to have. Like I've said, hopefully Disney has some nice tricks up their sleeve, because nothing I've seen up to this point in regards to "Legacy" has thrilled me so to speak, other than when it was annonced that a sequel was in the works ...

Not to make a direct comparison, but the 2nd and 3rd "Matrix" films were loaded with special effects, yet they were terrible films in comparison to the original, because their stories were weak.

I still have a strong feeling that this sequel is going to be a "watch it once, and then never again" type of film.
Yeah, the recent buzz around Hollywood has been really negative. One person likened it to Fincher's Alien3... saying its all visual and totally empty, and the story is a mess. But like Fincher, Kosinski has skill and will most likely move on to better projects.

That's too bad , but that's kind of the vibe I got the more and more I saw of the trailers. The comment likening it to "Alien 3" just downright scares me though . I really hope it doesn't end up being that bad, though I have to admit I wouldn't be surprised if it did...

Whatever happens, I'm thankful that we'll still always have the original...and I hope that the somewhat questionable outlook on this upcoming sequel further motivates Lisberger to give us the original "Tron" as it was seen in theaters, minus the "corrections" he's performed for the upcoming Blu-ray release. Doesn't he realize that the original film is perfect as it is? Please Mr. Lisberger, if you can do anything to give us the original film on Blu as it appeared theatrically, please, please do ...

Although no word on how much buzz has come from "virgins" who never noticed the first film when it came out--
Disney may be selling the cool graphics to new kids, but the script is pitching itself squarely to the geek demographic who have the '82 film memorized--And if you don't and the plot flies over your head, hey, the original movie's only been on rental shelves for the last twenty-six years...

I'm not worried about the bad press. This will live on as a cult classic, as does the original. Disney will be seeing dividends on this movie for years. Even if history repeats itself and the game earns more money than the movie.

I really think Alien 3 is underrated. It has more depth than it's predecessor,so if they compare Tron legacy to it I'm excited!Definitely NOT going to read reviews of it before seeing it.Have had them ruin some movieexperiences for me in the past. That's more my fault than the reviewers, mind.

I don't remember enjoying the origional Tron movie when I was a kid. The more I see the trailers and clips of Tron: Legacy, however, the more excited I get to see it.

That's interesting...if you didn't enjoy the first film, why bother with the sequel?

Well, because they are different, and I am different. Like I said, I haven't watched the origional TRON since I was very young. Perhaps the origional would be worth a second look, but I imagine it would be quite dated now. That's the great thing about individuality and movie preference....they are very subjective, and I have a fairly open mind when it comes to movies. What's to say that if I didn't enjoy the origional that I wouldn't enjoy the sequel?

Well, that's just it, the film WAS taken out of context and considered a "disappointment" when we we naively saw it as kids--
The hype told us it'd have that new "computer animation" stuff in it, and while it did, most of it was animated glows on treated live-action video.
Most of us had no idea about common mainframe-computer lore in 1982, so the hype sold Pac-man fans on "It's a videogame come to life!", and well...apart from the lightcycle race, it wasn't, all that much.
Since we didn't get what we'd "wanted", we all shrugged it off, and went back to see Blade Runner.

It's easy to be short-term judgmental about a movie a few years ahead of its personal-computer time, but that's what retrospect and eight years of DVD shelves are for.
(Just watched the original again recently to look up a scene, and there's just something cool about that electronic "grinding" engine sound old-school '82 lightcycles made. )

I always liked "Tron" better than "Blade Runner," but I understand where you're coming from.

And yes, I too still love the sound of the lightcycles ...

Yea Tron had a wonderful sound scape, I absolutely LOVED the sound of the giant guardians, a nice gliding rhythmic engine would be a way to describe them.

Because the original is a campy cheese fest, and this one isn't. It brings more people in having a "serious" film.

Well, keep in mind, there's no artistic comparison intended between the two--
The critic was just saying "I didn't like it the same way as something else I didn't like! "

(About the only things they have in common was having a loose story structure from too many discarded scripts--
Alien3 was originally supposed to take place in a monastery before being rewritten into a prison, and that after five or six other ideas...While Legacy had twenty years of discarded storylines to choose from, before settling on the obvious twenty-years-later one. Don't give it too much serious thought. )

I think I've decided no matter how bad it is in comparison to the original, I will be satisfied with "Tron: Legacy," just so long as there is an extended sequence involving the realm of the "inoperative-data pushers"
