I would say, yes...the origins of the story are not explained all that well. Basically the story in Tron Legacy start when Sam is 12 years old and the events before that time remain a mystery.

I noticed that, and thought that here they could go nuts with their favourite music from the 80's and they went with Eurythmics.

I liked the movie well enough, but it is kind of a glossy comicbook with little or no content.I even thought Jeff Bridges was kind of uninspired.Did anyone else notice he made some reference to his caracter in the big lebowski?Don't know if it was intentional, but I found a couple. Lets hope this is end of line

I completely disagree. All you need to know is recapped in the film. Everything else expands on it and gives you a better understanding.

Yes I'd recommend watching the first though.

Like GunRanger says, everything you technically NEED to know is recapped--
What you don't get is a sense of the characters: Old Bridges is a successful goofy ex-hacker, but we don't get a sense of how he got that way since the first film, or why he spouts Lebowski-esque Zen dude-isms.
Also, there's a "What happened to Tron" backstory/subplot that will play a lot more sentimentally with those who remember him as the hero of the first film, whereas without explanation he here comes off as the standard
[Show spoiler]"Buddy the hero couldn't save years ago".

If your walk-in Blockbuster has a copy (Netflix doesn't), your viewing of the movie will be that much better for a little research; if not, the movie will still at worst leave you curious for the Blu-ray to come out.

I can understand if some are disappointed but it's pretty much what I expected and I enjoyed it. Definitely helps to have seen the original and perhaps The Big Lewbowski too. I hope it makes enough money for them to do more movies.

Alright, I've had a lot of time to think about it since I saw it last night. The more I think about it, the more I love it! This is how sequels should be made. I found this movie to be not only a perfect continuation and love letter to the original, but I also think it may be one of the best sequels I've seen. It was just a really great movie, fun movie from start to finish. The visuals were absolutely incredible, the music was just outstanding (been listening to the soundtrack for a week or so, and now it's even better!), and I honestly found all the acting across the board to be good. Some of the dialog was a little bit weak, but I can live with it.

A few things I'd like to comment on, and there are some spoilers ahead:
[Show spoiler]
  • I did not at all find Clu's face to be awfully done or find it unbelievable bad as many have made it out to be. I thought it worked just fine.
  • I found the story to work in accordance to what they were trying to accomplish. I'm not really sure why people are complaining about it.
  • The pace was very reminiscent of the first movie, and I didn't find this dragged at all, much like the first.
  • The visuals of the games, good god! How incredible were they?
  • Daft Punk absolutely blew me away with their score. One of the best scores I've heard in quite some time and definitely my favorite of the year
  • I really wish that the big Tron reveal had been hidden better, because I knew it was him when we first met the masked, unnamed Contestant in the games. It just made sense.
  • I loved all the little nods to the first movie, especially "That's a big door!"
  • Quorra was incredible attractive and easy on the eyes
  • Garret Hedlund was actually pretty good in the movie. He played the character of Sam well enough, and I'm not sure why people didn't like him in it
  • Jeff Bridges was great once again as Flynn! I'm glad he came back to what is my second favorite role that he's ever done! (The first being Rooster Cogburn in True Grit )

I had a grin on my face the whole time and really didn't want it to end. I'm hoping it gets love so we get a third movie because I could absolutely visit The Grid many more times!

5/5

End of line.

Out of curiosity...

[Show spoiler]
I just want to talk about something that I don't see mentioned, the depth that doesn't need to be explained being overlooked.

An example is that I loved the whole Flynn/CLU thing and how CLU shows Flynn's development. When Flyyn created CLU, he was always rush forward to perfection and just wanted to accomplish which is shown by Clu being impatient for the next move and no room for change. In the movie we get to see Flynn's development because we see how different he is from CLU. Now he is someone who is patient and just more in-tune.

Am I looking into this too much?

4.5/5

I really enjoyed this movie. The soundtrack and most of the visuals were amazing. My only complaint would be that Clu could have looked more lifelike. I intend to catch this again before it leaves theaters and will definitely be picking it up when it hits blu ray.

Gave it a 5.

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D with some friends. The visuals were so stunning. When implemented, the 3D worked very well and was awesome (at the beginning of the movie, a computer prompt comes up saying something along the lines of only certain segments in the film are in 3D, but to still wear the glasses the entire time). Basically for the actual in-grid scenes is when it was used. Great story for the perfect sequel, even after all the time that has gone by. Not a Daft Punk fan, but even the music blended very well with the film. Great cast, and can't forget all the beautiful girls too...especially Olivia Wilde. She is absolutely amazing in this. My current PS3 wallpaper is of her character Quorra, laid out all sexy on that sofa from the trailer.

There's just something so...cinematic about Tron Legacy. Kinda reminds me of the first time I saw the WATCHMEN trailer. How these amazing people were able to bring these worlds to life. I'm definitely going to have to catch this one in the theaters again. It was a blast. Highly recommended.

Thanks! Stitch is my favorite Disney character from the last decade of Disney animation, he's an incredible character. And also cute and fluffy!

Saw Tron tonight and really it wasn't that good (big surprise, I know). Obviously the lights and the colors were pretty. Jeff Bridges's usual stoner mannerisms were laugh-out-loud funny at times, too. But the touted Daft Punk soundtrack was surprisingly absent for 90% of the film. I have no clue what this film was about; its plot was thinner than Avatar's. Some nice action sequences, but the best one occurred fairly early in the film and the climactic action sequence before the resolution is pretty disappointing.

Overall, pretty mediocre experience. And I was high as hell, too.

Maybe I was just too high, but I didn't notice the 3D scenes, either. There was a disclaimer at the beginning that said that the film alternated between 2D and 3D scenes, and I was thinking "OK, they filmed all of the expository dialogue scenes at the beginning in 2D," but the visuals later on never really jumped out at me...

After seeing Tron: Legacy in IMAX 3D I would say it was a worthy sequel to the first Tron movie. The application of 3D to the digital world of Tron was appropriate as a distinction from the real world. I think Avatar iwas a bit better in the 3D department, however. It was good to see the Disney castle at the beginning of the movie adapted to the Tron environment.

As it is, Legacy is a good continuation to the Tron story. I think for completeness, it would be good to have seen the first Tron prior to seeing Legacy because there are references to the Tron movie. However, even if you didn't, the movie does do a decent job at laying the groundwork for establishing the background of the Tron universe.

Legacy does presume that the viewer have some general basic information going in such as: Kevin Flynn was involved in discovering the Tron universe; Alan Bradley (the creator of the Tron program) was a close friend and partner to Kevin Flynn thus is the biggest Flynn supporter; Flynn was responsible for freeing the digital world from tyranny with the help of the Tron program. The reason that none of this is in a spoiler tag is because they are all known facts from the first movie.

Legacy is set up as the follow up to the first movie showing what happens after Flynn took over Encom as CEO. The story centers around Flynn and his son, Sam, Flynn's disappearance and Sam's search for him in the digital world. Again, these are all known information from the trailers.

While I won't go into details about the movie, I will say that it was worth the wait. I think the reason that Legacy took so many years to finally be made is that a workable premise for a story has to be established. With the destruction of Sark and freedom for the digital world there really isn't as much of a compelling reason to tell a story.

However, by making it Sam's search for his father poses questions about what happened to Kevin Flynn? Also, the actual 28 year separation between the Tron and Legacy movies resulted in more technological advancements in the real world and therefore allow for a story that shows an evolution in the digital world. This is good because familiar elements from Tron can be shown in a more advanced form that still reflect their Tron root (light cycle, recognizer, identity disc).

At any rate, this is another movie that I felt was good entertainment. It is definitely a movie that I will buy when it's finally released on blu-ray. Hopefully a 2 movie (Tron/Tron: Legacy) pack will be available. While I wouldn't expect a Tron 3 to happen (story premise issue), I would welcome it but it must a compelling enough story to be made. In the meantime, if you watched the movie for what it is and not try to over analyze everything, it would be an enjoyable time.

Just saw it. Not a very good film, but some nice visuals; I was kind of getting impatient and wishing it would end faster. I think they were hoping for Avatar business, considering the budget, but I'd be surprised if they do much more than break even.
