Yeah, this tech isn't anything new

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Traveler_(video_game)

A true hologram can be walked around, 360 degrees without the illusion. All this tech does is make it look like it's floating

Jeff, is correct, as usual.

On the other hand, Burton Inc.(from Japan) showed a true hologram at NAB 2010 (the thing that looks like a floating sphere in the pics)…
http://www.burton-jp.com/en/product.htm

The downside?
Normally, these things have to be viewed through laser-protection goggles , but as a safety measure for all attendees at NAB they demonstrated them inside an amber tube.

hi guys - i have a question in relation to 3d in cinemas.. 3d isnt suitable for my daughter which poses quite a difficuly when it comes to being able to watch newer kids movies in the cinema as most seem to be in 3d! i was on my own with the kids over the weekend and were passing the local cinema and dropped in to see what was on... wanted to check out How to train your dragon but it was only showing in 3d... does it have to be 3d or nothing in cinemas? seems a shame to lock out people who would happily see the film if it was showing in 2d...

I'd like to hear it.
I just liked the phrase attributed to Mae West. That Wikipedia reported it also to be a Meatloaf song was a bonus.

If you want to hear it, look here for the Meat Loaf version, or here for the lyrics, but I am not more than a passing Meatloaf fan.

Well that's a complicated question. Does it have to be 3d or nothing? No. Do the theaters want that extra $5? Yup.

I'm curious if it's possible to engage a 2D mode from a 3D "print" in the projector should the exhibitor choose to do so

They could always just supply glasses with the same type of lens for both eyes.

I wonder how many people would be "cured" if 3D was $5 cheaper.

Maybe not, but people are working on a solution.

I have a friend whose son is blind in one eye and cannot view 3D properly. A movie should be available in both formats, accessibility for disabled persons is an uphill battle and this situation seems to be taking steps back from the progress made.

If he's completely blind in one eye, all he should need to do is wear the glasses. Partial blindness, in which one eye can't keep up with the other, would necessitate a pair of both-eyes-same-lenses "2D override" glasses, which I really am shocked aren't yet a standard option in theatres.
