If you stop to ask, I think you'll find that everyone here is of the "Blu-ray is neato!" persuasion.
No paranoia here, just predictions that are looking more and more likely by the day.

Hey Penton,

Been absent recently, out in the UK, Leeds specifically. So I'm playing a bit of catchup.

See you went in for surgery. Hope your doing well, and that it was not anything to serious.

Shark would have definitely taken me to one of the auteur films if I was available.

As for Shark waking up. He's usually in a coma for about a week after TIFF.

Really don't know how he does it. The pace he goes at during the festival is mind blowing.

Probably everything that possibly can be said, has already been said by the younger folks as well as the 40-ish year old folks in the blogosphere, except possibly for this, Ergo…..

Penton,

Would you happen to know (or even speculate for that matter) why Lucasfilm didn't do new 4K scans for the original trilogy? I wouldn't think money was an issue.

Money was absolutely an issue (which is not to say that the lack of investment is justified, just that it was a factor in the decision). In part because much of the Special Edition CG work was performed at HD resolution and would need to be re-rendered and composited if a new scan was produced.

I’m reminded of a scene in Swordfish on multi-tasking.

(^ I’m told Variety has a live twitter feed.)
Then onto attending this ….

So, in the meantime. listen to Doctorossi , as he’s easily qualified to fill-in on the Star Wars thing during my absence.

Lol I think I know the scene your refering too.

Shark's significant other might have issues with it if that were the case.

With all of the money Lucas has, one would think he'd wanted the best possible presentation. Or, do you think given the source material of the films, would the Blu-rays have noticeably benefited from 4K scans, or would it have been negligible? Other speculation has been Lucas probably didn't want the original trilogy to show more detail than the prequels as they were limited to 1080p via the digital cameras used.

I think Lucas likes to strike a particular balance between quality and expenditure. If I can be an armchair psychologist, I think he sees that part of the work (film to digital transfer) as 'already done'.

I think they would've benefited substantially from 4K scans.

For that matter, I think even the improvement of new 2K scans would've been quite noticeable.

Yeah, I have no idea if there's anything to that speculation or not. There's certainly a logic to it, albeit a backward one. Lesser-detailed masters would also facilitate the 3D conversion process, so there's some speculation about that motive, as well. Being that Lucas was willing to shoot the prequels on 1080p equipment with no spatial latitude whatsoever, I think his zeal for the growing digital toolbox makes him happy to 'lock the movies off' at that resolution just so that he can have a stationary target, ever dwindling in the demands it puts on his increasing computing resources... but I'm playing amateur psychologist again.

You can be quite an eloquent writer . As an aside, check out who the D.P. on MoneyBall was.

b.t.w., did you get a chance to view ‘Machine Gun’ (see near end of this post)… https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-mo...ml#post4925884

Psychology aside, if you’re talent with some clout, is it best to ask for a percentage of the gross or the net?

Sad part is that I saw Wally's credit and I thought of this thread and that photo of him on the bridge in Winnipeg with Leo shooting Inception.

Sigh...

No, I didn't see MG, alas... Hear it's, well, "meh".

Penton man what do you make of the comments by disney ceo (i think) about comparing optical media to a melting ice cube? Don't quote me on that but that is the gist of it i believe. Now if a major force is saying such things it does not inspire me with confidence that bluray will survive the next two years let alone ten that some claim. Just wondered what your take on it is? Please, no insults ffrom certain members just opinions. Thanks.
