I think that not repeating himself is definitely a factor, it's just taken in line with aspects of his other films it's interesting to speculate on why his mind went to that specific solution. But one of the things that's so great about the craftsmanship of the adult Westerns of the 50s that cropped up as TV killed off the more black and white and less morally complex oaters that had been bread and butter pictures since movies began is that they didn't always hit you over the head with stuff like that: it's there if you want to interpret it that way but it also serves a narrative purpose so it doesn't stop the picture dead in its tracks to send you a message or get into a debate. It's doing something that's both economical with screen time but treating it in a different way that can make the good ones stand out.

Anyway, being able to interpret something on multiple levels is what makes art.
Absolutely, and sometimes it's a quirk of writers and directors that they can be unaware themselves of recurring aspects of their own work because they go with what works for them instinctively without being overanalytical. While Mann's longer interviews show that he was strikingly articulate and thoughtful both about the thematics and mechanics of filmmaking, conversely in the 70s Bertrand Tavernier interviewed co-writer Philip Yordan (who has a fascinating career but a cloudy legacy because he fronted for so many writers while also genuinely writing pictures himself) and later noted that he ultimately came away not knowing what Yordan really intended or really did about any subject he questioned him on because his every answer was tailored to be what he thought Tavernier wanted to hear.

Then last week, during Prime Day, eBay had a $25 off coupon or orders 119 or more (The peculiar number due to how much it costs for Amazon Prime a year I believe). That is what make me pull the trigger and I had plenty of PayPal funds from some prior sales (63.22 worth) to get for down to 31.77. These were both blind buys for me but as a lifelong Bond fan and Coburn fan (ever since seeing Monsters Inc. as a six year old) I couldn't pass up; it was easily the cheapest they were ever going to be especially for "Our Man Flint".
So you paid $94.99 for it, Paypal money is literally cash, not some sort of coupon.

$47 a piece for some sub 6.6 star on IMDB films is a hefty price tag. Hope you enjoy them.

I paid a premium for Leave Her to Heaven, but it is also a vastly superior film.

If it’s not coming out of bank account, than it might as well be

I could really care less about IMDB ratings.

The Flint films really depend on how big of a Coburn fan you are. I love the guy and I don't see how anyone doesn't think he was an absolute boss. Dollars and cents are completely personal. If you wanna spend 20 extra bucks on a BD, then I think it's reasonable and it will be with you forever as long as you possess an HD television and BD player. If you want to buy a couple decent bottles of wine on the weekend, it will cost you around 20-25 bucks, and those will go in a few days.

Really interesting to read your thoughts on the film, Aclea. I noticed "Winchester '73" is getting a release in France soon. It's one of my 5-10 favorite Westerns.
I believe its also getting a German release in December. I'm hopeful that its one of the Anthony Mann-James Stewart films in the Kino Universal deal since they said there were supposed to be some Stewart films.

Winchester '73 and Bend of the River are two of my favorite Westerns which both are up there with Ford and Hawks directed Westerns. Stewart kind of reminds me of Wayne's obsessed character in The Searchers.in Winchester. Also, Duryea was never better as a villain as he was in Winchester.

Why does it matter what the IMDB rating is? All of have different tastes in movies and many times with older films IMDB isn't really worth much. I'm a huge fan of all the Harryhausen films which all have terrible IMDB ratings and I would guess that many here are huge fans of them.

There is already an Australian release of Winchester 73, the master used is utter garbage. It is meant to beeither in the process of getting a restoration though.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll hold out for a US or UK release with a restoration hopefully.

Forgive me for being late to the discussion. The first thing I thought when I saw that poster was of stigmata and Christ imagery. Symbolism often flies right over my head and now I know why this jumped out at me. Interesting and good to know.

Yowzers... The amount of research that must have gone into this is impressive. It's definitely interesting to take note of Twilight Time's willingness to release titles that are underrepresented.

Yeah I was surprised that the two Truffaut films (Mississippi Mermaid and The Story of Adle H.) don’t even have a French release. My assumption is either low interest or an MGM thing.

IMDB ratings have meaning due to the fact it is a large pool of people rating just how much they like a film.

Most of my time is spent watching films from the 30s-50s and think the IMDB system still holds up pretty well for older films. If anything, many new films are skewed to rating much better than they are. (Avengers Infinity War is a top 25 film of all time in terms of audience enjoyment/satisfaction, etc?)

I'm a big stop motion animation fan, and that clearly puts me in a Harryhausen fan. But I'm also well versed enough to know that most of the movies he worked on do not rise to the level of his special effects and special effects alone do not make a great film.

The ratings of his films I feel are fairly spot on. The guy wasn't the director, he was the visual effects creator. Some of the movies he worked on were good, and others wouldn't have much value outside of his contributions.

We do all have different tastes, IMDB is the equalizer that shows us on average what film goers think and rate the experience. It isn't perfect by any stretch, but if on average someone thinks a movie is a 5 out of 10, that probably isn't worth a premium price to anyone but a die hard fan.

I didn't say that special effects etc make a film, but that many cult films that are poorly regarded by IMDB users or even critics on Rotten Tomatoes have a huge fanbase. Many of those films Harryhausen worked on have a diehard fan base that is going to pay those prices while others aren't. Were all different. Anyway, the main point was if I or say someone else really likes a film then the price is worth it for a certain film.

Sites like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes are useful to take into context but they're far from the equalizer for a lot of films. Especially for many of the pre-Code, sci-fi, teen comedy, erotic, or for very obscure films since everyone has very different tastes.

No worries bro the Flint films are worth every penny. James Coburn is IMO maybe the coolest cat to ever be in film. He was like McQueen or Bronson with comedy chops. He's one of my favorite actors of all-time.

Damn right he was, his voice was as smooth as butter; one of my favorite actors as well.

I'd say you just described Lee Marvin, but I do like me some Coburn.

I love Marvin, but I don't know that he could have pulled off the Flint roles like Coburn did or a role like the lead in "The President's Analyst." But I don't know that Coburn would have been as effective as Lee was in roles like the leads in "Point Blank" or "Prime Cut". Both guys are two of my favorites.
