Had a late dinner. Just browsing the interwebz until I get caught up on White Lotus a bit later.

Hopefully I'll feel a lot better tomorrow. Def on the tail end of my lovely head cold/sickness.

Home now and on the phone with Progressive via USAA to see about motorcycle insurance. After that, I'll fold some laundry and then pick out tonight's film to watch. I'm folding t-shirts which isn't difficult but I am not a fan. Socks and boxers are easy peasy.

I had some good Cold Stone today. I got the Cheesecake Fantasy but instead of going with the cheesecake ice cream, I got their ice cream with Butterfinger chips inside. Muy delicioso.

Chocolate-dipped waffle bowl with sprinkles like a real man? Or a regular bowl like a plebeian?

Going to bed, just hit page 260 in Sunrise in the Reaping. Both eager to finish and dreading it at the same time.

Ha, yeah those sprinkles are real manly I didn't splurge for the waffle cone but it would have been even better if I had. It was really good though.

I was on the phone for quite awhile with insurance companies with the goal of getting quotes for motorcycle coverage. Surprisingly, I managed to start my movie at probably close to 9pm or later and I took a brief nap and was able to finish Lone Survivor. Besides my little nap this morning, I've been up for about 27 hours.

As for the film, I believe this was my second time seeing the movie in its entirety. Second or third with the first time being in the theater. Giving credit where it's most deserved, the Navy SEALS who gave all and the other service members who made the ultimate sacrifice, I do really appreciate Peter Berg telling these stories.

I actually haven't been to the gym since the early 2000s as I put together a home gym (power rack with lever/jammer arms, upper/lower lat machine, land mine, leg press, leg extension, full dumbbell set, and pulley system).

But the Craziest thing I remember was in the 90s. Some dude always used to try squatting more weight than he can handle. One time he had 12 plates racked (6 per side) and 3 of us spotting him. Didn't even finish a full rep before he fell forward and a bit to one side and almost smashed into the mirror. We finally told him he needs to stop trying that and work with weight he could handle.

Another time I was in there after 5pm when it was always a meat-market. Some chick who was all made up and wearing perfume and in her cutesy "outfit" (probably the equivalent of today's lululemon crowd ) asked to work in with me on the leg press. I had 1200 lbs racked and was in the middle of a set when she asked. Not trying to brag, just want to show the insanity of her inquiry. And besides, 1200 lbs isn't actually a lot, we had bodybuilders that were doing upwards of 1800-2000 lbs in my gym back then, a couple of them were pro, with one of them having placed 2nd at the Mr. Olympia twice in the mid 90s. Anyway, I ignored her, finished my set and then asked how much weight she was going to work with. "Oh, just two 45s." Yeah I told her sorry, I'm not going to unrack/rerack that much weight as I still had 3 more sets. She didn't get the hint and kept talking. I finished my set, happily took the weights off to her stated weight and bailed out of there. Never went back at that time ever again.

Now I have seen some crazy/idiotic stuff that people are doing in the gym that people caught and posted on YouTube, like people swinging off a cable/lat machine lol. Never saw any of that in the 90s, so I'd venture to guess you've seen way more than I have with today's gym crowd.

Dude...haven't you gone to bed yet? I just woke up myself (4:44 here in the east coast).

Yeah.....1200 would be some serious ego lifting for me. There are lots of other things that people do where you can tell they are new or ignorant (possibly both). Not taking the weights off after you finished is not cool....especially if you are doing something like 1200. Bad form is something that makes me laugh inside (I am almost OCD when it comes to form).......I just think how much time they are wasting and when they will quit after "working out" for months and not seeing any results.

Oh we're talking about the gym? The last time I really had a regular routine was when I was stationed in Yuma and I actually trained at a gym out in town just to get away from the Marine 24/7 atmosphere. It had nothing to do with all of the hot Latinas there, I swear

My dad used to be REALLY into bodybuilding (amateur) so we took a trip down to SoCal while I was in high school and we checked out the Muscle Beach in Venice and then we hit the Gold's Gym which was the Mecca for bodybuilding. Even in the middle of the day, it was packed.

I bet that place would have been nuts with all the testosterone flying around.

And thank you for your service. I am an Army vet myself....but a good bit older than yourself. I joined just to get money for college back in the 80's. I was at Ft. Hood. The town outside the base was Killeen, TX.....nothing but boobie bars and used car dealerships with the occasional fast food joint.

Older than me? Bro, you're older than most national parks Kidding of course! Older than me but look younger than me

Yeah, I don't remember a great deal but I seem to remember even the women looking unnaturally big. My vague memories have us seeing one pro bodybuilder but I don't remember for sure and if we did, I can't remember who it was. I wonder what it would be like to walk around with the size that someone like Ronnie Coleman or Jay Cutler had. Never mind the effects of everything on their body. Just walking around being that massive.

Oh for pro bodybuilders, when I was still living in Modesto, I saw former bodybuilder Mike Matarazzo once or twice. I belonged to a tennis club/gym and he was dating a girl that worked there. Sadly, he passed away several years ago. While still a big guy, he wasn't as big as he was in this picture of his younger days.

Thats pretty cool.....can't say I have ever been around guys as big as that. Just seeing their size in person would be impressive.

Not sure if I look younger, but I do my best to stay young. It is a lot of work, especially as I get older.

Got a late start on the morning after working late last night, so I'm just now getting around to taking a break and sitting here drinking coffee.

Yeah the not storing the weights is a big annoyance. The culprits always seemed to be the ones that don't train regularly and don't understand gym etiquette, at least back when I was still going. I purposefully used to get in the gym early on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day every year when I was still training in the gym. Not another person in sight, and all the weights were where they were supposed to be! I had the whole place to myself every time. I don't remember a single person being in there on those days. It was gym heaven lol. And good that you can already recognize bad form. That's a good sign of solid foundation knowledge right there.

[Show spoiler]
I remember Mike. He was big on the scene back in the 90s. As for bodybuilding in general, I'd only made it out to "the mecca" a couple of times back then. It was cool to walk down Venice Beach and people watch. Arnold used to have a restaurant out there called Schatzi On Main. I never did get a chance to eat there, it was always packed. Apparently they served great breakfast there, and high protein of course.

The guy that I mentioned that placed 2nd twice at the O in the mid 90s was Shawn Ray. The dude was only 5'6", but he was a monster. If I recall his competition weight was below 200, but damn he reached over behind me one time to get his gym bag and it felt like someone blocked out all the lights lol. I was around 240 at the time and I felt like a wimp next to him.

He used to travel to different gyms, his theory was that no gyms had the same exact equipment, and that was enough to add variety to your training and minimize stagnation (muscle confusion principle). He was definitely on to something there as I tried that out and was sore every time.

I'll be out to the gym in about 90 minutes (my day ends at 3PM.) Hope to get there before everyone else does after work and get my workout in without having to wait for a certain weight or machine. I will tell you one thing that is more bad luck (an annoying) but it never fails....I will be walking up to either grab some weights or a certain machine, and within the last few feet....someone else will swoop in a second or two before me and use/take exactly what I was going to do. I just hang my head and find something else to "hold me over". Never fails.

I hope it wasn't because they saw you coming so they swooped in. I don't think I've ever seen that before, and that would definitely annoy me. Otherwise, back in the day if you were reaching for the same piece of equipment or apparatus around the same time as someone else, it almost never failed that one person would offer it up to the other first. More proper gym etiquette.
