I was as much disgusted as I was puzzled but, never underestimate the bean counters in any company. In fact, Wendell has a right to be concerned that 4K BD will remain 8 bit 4:2:0 Rec. 709, i.e. engineers vs. marketers (with their bean counters as advisors).

Don’t get me wrong. You are correct, despite being shot with 4K (or higher rez cameras)….or shot on celluloid, a major cause for the continued paucity of 4K finishing remains the additional cost charged to clients which still typically runs about 2x or more than that for a 2K finish for the typical feature motion picture that Hollywood studios churn out these days.

Point I was making is that you have to start somewhere in order for the high-rez DI workflow to become commonplace and at least we’ve started….and there has been progress (more efficient codecs, lower storage costs, etc.)

It’s a process.
