Thank you. I have a horrible feeling it will spell the end of our time in the premier league.

You can't drink silicone, Mr. P. I know how seamless upscaling can look and I've already said that a quality upscale plus the extra bit depth and wider colour space could look pretty damned nice. But with all of the odds that are already stacked against UHD BD I think it could do without reams of upscaled content initially, which would send the naysayers into a tizzy and become quickly embedded into the public consciousness due to the tech blogging headlines it'd generate. It might even hurt UHD in general if UHD BD gets a rep - however fairly or unfairly - for having upscaled content. IMO it'd be best to introduce such things when/if the format has gotten a foothold in the market.

I'm suddenly reminded of some cheerleaders lined up on the pitch of a recorded match which I'm starting to watch now just as I'm typing this. Luckily, you guys are under no pressure, as was the Steed.

Agreed (and it's good to see with jono's fine find on the last page that there are some true 4K titles in there….but keep in mind that Pictures (Sony) is the only major Hollywood studio with a healthy 4K mastered library, as well as a 4K finishing policy for new features (when possible). It remains to be seen in the future if/how this will change over the course of time with the sale of Colorworks to Deluxe.

I would say on a content provider point, everyone but Sony Pictures and Netflix still shun 4K finishing , unless a Director with some leverage strongly desires it.

This is why football is the best sport on the planet. Panic, anxiety, relief, joy, devastation, love, passion. What else, apart from movies and a good (or bad) woman can give you such varied emotions?

Well, one final push next week. We simply have to do it now. 1 win should do it.

What news are you expecting on a Saturday night? If it's breaking news, it will be here. Or are 255 pages not enough for you?

The Mod team has been getting a lot of reported post about English Premier League Football being discussed here & not on topic of 4K movies ~ Maybe we can change that a little by staying on topic?

Well we support making life easier for the mod team ….especially those that do their job out of volunteerism, rather than for profit. Plus, CrazyB is one of my favorite mods anyway.

I, for one, and I hope all *violators* will absolutely strive to tone down the English Premier League Football discussion. For perspective, I would say though to those complaining to the mod team, it's sometimes difficult for friends to contain their football/soccer enthusiasm and I think if one goes thru over the 250+ pages, probably a large reason for the 4K Movies Releases thread approaching the 1 million viewership mark so quickly in relation to other threads in the Tech Forum is due to abundant postings on original, cutting edge UHD/4K information….many times posted before it’s become “official”, rather than abundant postings about the Prem league. Anyway, I (we) got the message.

I don’t know, but I’d bet just about all internet forum threads have some off-topic content as well as a plethora of inaccuracies and bickering, which thankfully , and significantly, this thread doesn’t, but in view of Crazy’s request, back to 4K…

I read from a professional blogger on the internet that Europe ditched disc distribution and at least Athens is going with clothes: http://www.dtcreports.com/weeklyriff...to-4k-blu-ray/

As a consumer, do you feel this is true?

Also, not inquiring solely of Adrian, but an open question to anyone, moderators included… in the above article, the professional blogger writes “Hollywood studios might also be abandoning Europe, disc-wise. Three months ago, Paramount signed a deal to let arch-rival Universal distribute its disc titles in Europe—this is essentially like asking the Star Wars people to distribute Star Trek gear. (Although now that J.J. Abrams is handling both star space franchises, maybe that’s not such a dogs-sleeping-with-cats proposition. But I digress.)”.

Do you think such operation by Paramount is exclusively related to consumer tech or do you think that sort of outsourcing philosophy also extends to their professional tech and solutions and do you feel it led to a lower common denominator product outcome as compared to that of other major Hollywood studios? For if yes, potentially this LCD could extend to the 4K/UHD sector too.

Hmmm. While I'm under no illusions that Blu-ray has had a harder time of it in Europe, I wouldn't let one shop in an economic basket-case of a country tell the whole story. Still, UHD BD will be a VERY hard sell over here, that much is clear.

As to all the people who complained in their droves about the football chatter: really?

Default Will we all buy 4K blu if the original Digital Intermediate was 2k?

As someone who has worked a lot with 4K for the last five years, including FX compositing and Color timing in 4K I was about to buy a 4K display for the home when something struck me. Most theatrical releases of the last 10 years, probably in the region of about 90%, were post produced in 2K and some in 1080 (and upscaled to 2k DCI spec). A good amount of theatrical features shot on the Alexa (skyfall etc), even in Alexa Raw, have only ever existed in 2K. Most of the larger budget features also have leaned towards producing FX shots in 2K as part of a 2K digital intermediate.

The advantage that an original film camera negative, or the cut negative, has is that in theory it can be rescanned/telecined at practically any resolution and depending on the negative format (35, 65, 16, Imax etc) could go up to as high as 8K with tradeoffs in grain size etc. Digital won't fare quite so well, a 2K capture, fx and color timing can only really ever be that and although with the larger budget FX films it is completely possible to go back and re-render the digital work in a higher resolution I wonder how many studios will bother and with how many titles?

We did some tests with material shot at 4K and put them through colour timing and FX in both 4K and 2K. We downrezzed the 4K to 2K, then uprezzed the 2K to 4K and screened them side by side. We did a blind taste test and found that no-one could pick which was which. AT any screen size. I did the work myself and after two weeks couldn't remember which was which and certainly couldn't see it in the context of a cut sequence.

Will we, as consumers, actually bother to check whether the shiny 4K blu ray disc we are about to buy is sourced from the original 2K digital intermediate and uprezzed in the mastering suite or is a complete rescan and conform/color time etc in 4K? And if we don't check are we ultimately paying for something that our new players and TV's might be able to do an adequate job of? True, 444 colour and extended gamut is going to improve things a bit but is it enough to double dip on a scale that will make the format economically viable for us and the studios and distributors.

Just asking.

I too do not hold out much hope of the format gaining widespread market penetration or exposure in mainland europe. I am sure that UHDBD will be perceived to be a niche product and something videophiles will flock to and be encouraged to use to witness 4K to its fullest potential.

I am fully expecting and prepared to purchase and import a US UHDBD Player as soon as these are available, as I have done with BD and DVD before it. The only thing that may scupper these plans are the talk of online authentication which will block or hinder me doing this due to my geographical location.

In the interest of fair play, I hope that all the football/soccer complainers, for once in a blue moon, would actually contribute (give back to the thread) rather than take and take UHD/4K info from this thread continuously on a daily, monthly, or, for those long-term silent readers, yearly basis.

Heck, it doesn’t have to be technologically cutting edge info.
