My first train of thought here was the UV would be available on-line and won't affect the physical media itself. With this article it seems that it's actually imbedded on the disc and will be rendered useless unless you register on-line. So why buy the physical media?

When you buy your first UltraViolet Blu-ray disc and slot it into your Blu-ray player at home, it will connect to the internet and ask you to make an account. This Blu-ray disc will then be forever connected to your UltraViolet account.
where does it say that making a UV account is required.

Will you be able to sell or trade your UV discs? The license key is connected to your account so probably not.

Oh MY God.

It says that the disc WILL connect to the internet and ask you to make an account. It doesn't explicitly say it's required, but it also doesn't explicitly say it isn't. It implies, however, that you are forced to do this. You're wrong on this point. The entire section of the article talking about this implies that this is a forced thing. Trust me, I hope it's not. But as of right now, you're wrong. Drop it.

Where it says to play the disc you have to connect and get a key to play the disc. The disc itself will be DRM protected and you will not be able to unlock the disc to watch it without first being connected to the internet and getting an unlock key.

hmmm, I'd normally be up in arms but I say wait till the first of these discs come out. if it's like bd-live and you don't need to use it if you don't use the ulrtraviolet features then whatever. Just more useless crap I won't need. but if it's REQUIRED ala divx (the circuit city fiasco ) then this is a STUPID move by the studios. and I honestly don't see it actually working.

but without more info.... wait and see

Will this apply to rentals as well? I'm assuming yes. Will Netflix have to make a disclaimer? I can see this being a total headache for rental companies as people will call & complain.
Ahhh DRM, it's worse than rats & cockroaches!!

I dont understand why csdot doesnt understand that.

Its very simple. " In order to play your UV blu ray or DVD disc. You need to access your digital library to download your license key. If your not connected to the internet, the tv show or movie wont start."

I agree. What I think would be a better idea would be that you will need to connect to the internet to watch it on another device or without the disc. That way you could watch the blu itself no problem but to watch the cloud stage based version of it you would need to get the unlock key. Of course it's just wishful thinking and I am probably wrong but I hope not.

i like the idea of cloud storage, but surely they don't expect us to be wired just to watch the movie? that's beyond ridiculous

well i guess its just hard for me to believe that every major studio would shoot themselves in the foot like that. not every BD or DVD player connects to the internet. thats severely limiting the amount of potential buyers of the disc. since it doesnt explicitly say its required, i really doubt it is. that article isnt even related to UV directly, its written by someone who has never used the system. its entirely reasonable to assume they may not have the facts 100% straight.

THIS is a good idea, and if UltraViolet only were this, I'd applaud it. But as it seems now it's the worst kind of DRM yet conceived. I guess we'll learn a lot more once Green Lantern (and that other film) hits the market, but until then all we have are a few vague articles on the net and the UltraViolet homepage (which has "YOU CAN WATCH STUFF ONLINE, AND ON LIKE TWO PLACES AT ONCE" repeated twenty times).

Another article I found online that puts it more in line with my theory it's from last year but provides some decent information:

Quote:
Blu-ray is so last week. At least that's what yet another new technology aimed at home entertainment consumers wants you to believe. While Blu-ray only has about 15% of the market share, a group of studios, retailers, rental services and hardware manufacturers are betting you're already looking for the best thing. Hence, UltraViolet.

UltraViolet is just a fancy form of digital locker / cloud-based subscription services that have been in existence for a while but in this case it would let you watch official releases of movies, TV shows, music and games. So how does this all work?

Like other similar services, you pay for a subscription and then you can either upload existing movies to your account or head to Best Buy, for example, and purchase a movie on UltraViolet (it will then be immediately unlocked on your account). Once a media file (be it movie, TV show, game...) is available on your account, you'll be able to access it from any pretty much any software-updateable device. For example, you could start a movie on your TV, watch a little bit more on your laptop and then finish it off on your iPhone.

To be fair, the companies behind UltraViolet aren't trying to eliminate Blu-ray or hard copies of movies. In fact with almost all of the major movie studios behind the project (with the exception of Disney who is partnering with Apple on their own cloud-based service, KeyChest), UltraViolet will simply become another feature when you buy a DVD or Blu-ray. You'll see the little logo and know that you can now upload that movie to your account and be able to watch the digital copy wherever you go.

UltraViolet is still working out some technical issues and will begin beta testing later this year. It's unclear exactly when it will become available to the public but I'm guessing probably not until 2011.

If this is truly what it is then I would not be opposed to it one bit.

PC games have been doing this nonsense for a while and some of those programmes are worse than viruses. What was that PC one Starfire?

My BD player doesn't have internet access and I'd need 20 metres of Cat5 cable (which would have to go round five doorways to get internet access. The wireless dongle is the same price as the Star Wars Saga and guess which one I'd rather buy.

This is just another form of Big Brother they'll know when you watch, what you watch at all times.

All the studios have signed on except Disney.

And you can bet region coding will come into force in a big way.

It took me all of about twenty seconds Googling to get the actual details of this. It seems like "csdot" is closer to right than most people.

This is what people have always suspected the studios wanted. If it takes off, physical movies will have one foot in the grave.

Google search, learn it, love it, use it.

True and I will agree with you for now on this as no one has used the system yet so we don't know everything about it yet.

this is my whole point. if you need to be connected to the internet to watch the disc, whats the point of having the physical blu-ray disc at all if you can just stream it?

Oh good god, this can't be honestly real it only gives one more excuse for pirates to have their version without any restrictions which we should have too.
