Default Technicolor HDR

Technicolor HDR Looks For Recognition As Viable HDR Standard
https://hdguru.com/technicolor-hdr-l...rd/#more-21509
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/465-hi...l#post55043688

"Although Dolby Vision, HLG and HDR10+ were vigorously championed as the latest and greatest platforms for high dynamic range (HDR) on new 4K Ultra HDTV sets by various participating television partners attending CES 2018, the lesser-known platform Technology HDR was quietly making news of its own.

As this is posted, the HDR platform was being championed by Technicolor and Royal Philips NV for selection as a candidate standard to be part of the complete standard for the next-generation ATSC 3.0 over-the-air broadcasting system.

Technicolor HDR is the common name of the joint HDR format that merges together elements of separate proposals developed by Philips and Technicolor. Proponents of the combined system, which is also known as SL-HDR1, have been doing most of their proselytizing to TV broadcasters, pay-TV service providers and Hollywood studios.

But that’s not because the format is any less “dynamic” on TV screens than either the Dolby Vision or HDR10+ platforms it is competing against. All three HDR profiles use dynamic metadata which allows color grading on a scene-by-scene or shot-by-shot basis, for more realistic overall look than is seen in standard dynamic range (SDR) or even the static metadata HDR10 HDR profile. ..."

Excerpt from that article - “As of December, Technicolor HDR, through portions of Philips’ HDR proposal merged into the combined platform, has become one of the three optional HDR formats in the Ultra HD Blu-ray specification. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are the other ones, while HDR10 is the lone mandatory HDR format” dated Jan. 30 by the ‘Guru’.

Heck, we get paid nuthin for our gurudom….it’s charitable giving to the Blu-ray.com community at large. All we hope for are good deals on TVs, players and such from our retailer insider Robert Zohn.

Anyway, for those 'driving' into work this a.m., or going back home (translation - sitting on the 405 ), don’t take your eyes off the road. Here’s an audio on SL-HDR1 ….

(among other things, explains the general concept of carrying the HDR metadata in the SEI messaging.

zmarty, I was sent this clip tonight, check it out on z youtube, as the topic is just not for me (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...er#post8074522) <- thus I was reluctant to watch it. Heck, as I love all dem animals, I can’t even read anymore about Waya (https://twitter.com/DarynOkada/statu...57312090488833) from Daryn - http://variety.com/2016/artisans/new...ls-1201833099/

The video may be of some artistic merit though -

Some camera news. Arri finally launched a new true 4k camera, the Alexa Large Format: https://www.arri.com/largeformat/

It's actually a 4.5k full frame sensor with a similar size and shape to the Sony Venice. And of course, with the new sensor size, it requires new lenses. The Alexa LF doesn't replace the Alexa SXT, but slots in between it and the Alexa 65. But I expect it will become the new workhorse standard. I also expect it will be getting a lot more work for Netflix and Amazon content.

Also, Panavision added the DXL2 8k camera which incorporates the new Red Monstro Vistavision sensor: http://dxl.panavision.com/

I dunno about "workhorse", it's just part of the current trend for VistaVision-sized optics. As you say it requires different lenses, using 'large format' brings with it other issues like reduced depth of field vs a 4-perf sized sensor. I think the old Alexa XT and derivatives thereof will be knocking around for a good long while, particularly if you want to shoot with anamorphic lenses. Sure, you can just get regular 2x glass and use the VV sensor in Super 35 mode but if you were to do that then you might as well have used a S35-sized sensor camera anyway. Proper large format anamorphic glass is available of course, like the Hawk65 and the Ultra Panavision optics but those aren't exactly a dime a dozen these days.

Thumbs up ARRI Unveils Large Format 4K Alexa Camera, Solves Netflix Spec Dilemma

With this new camera, ARRI ends this dilemma. The new Alexa LF records native 4K -- actually 4.5K according to CEO Glen Kennel, "with the same colourimetry, dynamic range ... but in a format that supports [4K] resolution in terms of pixels." Accompanying the Alexa LF camera launch are 16 new large-format ARRI Signature Prime lenses, ranging from 12 mm to 280 mm and fitted with the new ARRI LPL mount. Existing Alexa lenses and accessories are also compatible with the new camera.

I agree that the Alexa SXT line will still get regular use. But I think the new LF and the Vistavision size sensors in general will become much more in vogue, so to speak. Plus, I can't even count how many times a cinematographer has wanted to use an Arri on a Netflix show but was denied because of their strict 4k requirement. Since the LF will be available to purchase by other camera houses outside of Arrirental, it will likely become just as ubiquitous as the SXT.

Sure, VV-sized sensors may well become the '4K TV' of digital cameras, i.e. it almost doesn't matter whether you want a 4K model or not because at a certain level of quality in x manufacturer's line-up then it's gonna be 4K by default. Given how the streaming model for original content has exploded in the last few years then I'm not surprised that ARRI want a piece of the action, origination-wise. But the XTs and associated Alexa family will be around for a good long while yet.
