Okay, so the Vizio P-series FINALLY got a YouTube app. Here’s the problem: none of the videos that claim to be 4K hdr are actually displaying HDR when I play them. Anyone have a clue what’s going on here?

The 2016/17 Vizio P Series lacks the hardware to decode VP9/2. So it will never display YouTube HDR via the internal app. If you want YouTube HDR, you must buy an external device.

Edit: Although great news, I was hoping it would be an app we can stream The Masters in 4K HDR. While I have DirecTV, I'm too cheap to pay for their top tier package that includes 4K. My alligator arms just can't reach my checkbook. I do however recommend the crispy duck.

Not to solely single out The TV Answer man, as there well are other nonsense spewing AV journos on the web who these days vigorously promote Ultra HD Blu-rays when long time readership knows in the past they were more than a BIT publicly dismissive of Ultra HD Blu-rays value/need when the format was being worked on by the BDA before it launched. Like Swanni's, those assertions have also been *conveniently* removed from the internet.

Animal stories/analogies . I have one to share because as a youngster and actually teenager I was too cheap to pay for my own golf balls and was actually given a wet one every several days by my best friend.

My childhood home was literally right next to a golf course, i.e. our backyard was adjacent to a sand trap next to a beautiful large green. Entertaining watch as every 3 or 4 days some duffer would slice a shot into our backyard and like clockwork, our German Shepherd would sprint out right before they would try to pick up their out of bounds ball, grab it in his mouth, growl and slowly walk away as if saying….‘finders keepers’.

No one ever dared challenge him after word got out at ‘the 19th hole’ that one day during an encounter on our property some idiot raised his club in a threatening fashion to which our best friend dropped the ball from his mouth, took an attack stance and demonstrated his pearly whites in full glory. On thee other hand, he was exceedingly gentle with small children and even babies.

Just want to thank the community in this thread for the help picking up new equipment the last few weeks. I now have a solid 4k 3D display and Sony's X800 Blu-Ray player rocking my 7.1 4k 3D receiver...my equipment is most likely bargain-basement to some of you folk...here is where I'm at:

Receiver: Sony STR-DN840 (purchased around 3 years ago)
Display: Sony Bravia 55X930D (bought 4 weeks ago in a bit of a panic about failing support for 3D software, but it's a fine set)
Player: Sony UBD-X800 (got it last night)

So everything's all hooked up and swapping spit just fine...here's how I tested everything.

First 4k Disc: Dunkirk.
First HD Blu-Ray: Empire of the Sun
First Disc to see how the setup handled lower-grade video (BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries, which was shot on 16mm)
First 3D Title: Gravity
First Favorite Title: Pinocchio

I know my system is probably like buying a 2005 Toyota to some of you (no Atmos, no DolbyVision, etc.)...but failing 3D support was a priority, space and budget was another...I've seen Pinocchio and Empire of the Sun countless times, and last night, it was if I was seeing them for the first time, and the opening of Gravity in 3D with the isolated audio was pure magic. Really happy. Thanks, again.

I see everyone else's equipment and talking about what's new and what's on the horizon, I feel like I'm running a "4k 3D In A Box" setup. It's okay...I can stop fretting about my 3D titles for a while now, and my old Blu-Rays look startling. Cant imagine them looking better. I'm happy. Now I have a new obsession..which titles are worth a 4k double-dip upgrade? Going to be a fun year. Looking to pick up Bridge on the River Kwai, Harry Potter 1 & 2 for the OCN scans, and anything by Spielberg, Pixar, and Nolan next month.

By the way, it's amazing how a great master of an old DVD can hold up. There's a largely forgotten Disney title called The Happiest Millionaire which came to DVD via Anchor Bay in the 90's, and I gave it a quick look today and was floored by how well it held up. Upscaling can only do so much, hats off to Anchor Bay for the terrific mastering work they did 20 (!!!) years ago.

DVD will certainly start to fall apart once you get into front projection kinda screen sizes but yes, a well-mastered disc can still hold up VERY nicely indeed on these 4K direct-view displays. Settings and upscale algorithms play their part though, Sony's 4K scaling errs on the softer side whereas those Koreans tend to sharpen their signals a lot more, which gives a decent BD a very 'punchy' look but it's a lot more unforgiving with sources of lesser resolution.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a DVD source...no hiding that...right from the outset, you know you're watching a DVD, but wowza. Those guys at Anchor Bay did great work. There was some love on that grill. Upscaled on the new set and player, it's served piping hot.

That's why dogs are mans best friend. He was protecting your casa from rogue golf balls and bad golfers. And I'm sure your "private Property" sign was easy to miss as it hadn't been graded for HDR back then.

Honestly guys, the difference between DV and HDR10 is microscopic at best. Are we really deluding ourselves into thinking that 12-bit on a 10-bit panel can perform miracles as opposed to 10-bit on the same panel?

There was an LG set I had my eye on for the longest time, which supported 3D and DolbyV, and I was ready to pounce on it and waited too long. The price suddenly began to escalate and then almost doubled in a matter of a few weeks. I know 3D is kind of a lost cause in the States, but I didn't know how lost it truly was until last year, with manufacturers dropping support for it on new sets. I sacrificed DV for the most reasonable 4k 3D set with good reviews, even with the shortcomings (active 3D glasses which my wife hates, edge-lit screen versus sets with truer blacks, no DV...). I planted my flag on 3D 4k, that was the hill I was going to die on. After setting up the X800 and taking a breath, I watched 15 minutes of Dunkirk in 4k HDR and saw that oil slick with the color values and detail, saw the fabric stitching on the costumes, the battered wood on Mark Rylance's Moonstone ...yeah, I'm very happy.

I completely understand people not feeling motivated to make the jump to 4k and HDR from their existing Blu equipment. It took a lot of convincing and discussions with my wife, who has two Masters degrees in communications. She was dubious and on the fence. I get it. *But* I'm going to share an anecdote...Ray Bradbury was a great admirer of Walt Disney, Bradbury went to Disneyland and was observing details, and he asked an employee about a certain spire on the incongruous castle at the end of Main Street, what was it doing there, what was the point, and Bradbury was told that in terms of architecture or reality, it served no purpose whatsoever, but despite the cost, Walt insisted on it, bit the financial bullet to include it. Bradbury laughed with joy, saying that was Walt all over. He and the audience didn't need the extra touches, but once audiences experienced them, they realized they wouldn't part with any of them. "It doesn't need to be that good" didn't fly with Walt. Oh, yes, it did, even if people didn't realize it at the time.

So sure, I get people being satisfied with 1080p HD, but once you see that oil slick in Dunkirk and the color depth and detail of tiny grades of color values...you stop thinking "does this need to be that good" and you immediately realize, "Oh, hell, yes it does, and thank you for going the extra mile".

Does DolbyVision equate to the extra effort on a facade of a castle in a theme park? I don't know, I only have the opinions of others to rely on, but if it was viable at the time, I absolutely would have gone with a 3D set with HDR and DolbyVision. I didn't have that option because I waited too long on the fence. Does 4k HDR equate? Absolutely. Once seen, you realize it isn't only better quality than what you've known in 1080 HD, it's more than that. It's essential. Is DolbyVision even better? Again, apparently so based on the enthusiastic responses to it. But I had no *reasonable* option at the time, I could have either a DV set with no 3D, or a set with HDR and 3D. The one with all three shot up in costs like Wlie E. Coyote's Acme bills. I couldn't get all options I wanted within the parameters I was dealing with within the time frame. It just couldn't happen. I waited too long, the DV 3D set I wanted doubled in price in the matter of weeks. I screwed up. Eventually got what I could, when I could, and sacrificed DV in the process. That said, I'm really happy with what I do have, it stomps my previous equipment into the dirt (anyone want to buy a 10-year-old 1080p Westinghouse TV given as a wedding present that's now taking up space collecting dust? No?), and God only knows, in a few years, maybe consumer-level DolbyVision 16k 3D glasses-free OLED VR wet-wired brain implants will be the new thing, and I'll experience it and consider that essential, too. As of this morning, I'm ok with what I got, and realizing it isn't the best of what's possible. It's the best of what was doable.

you find the differences (Dolby Vision/HDR10) - "microscopic"

'i find' the difference of (Dolby Vision/HDR10) - 'night and day'

do we disagree? :: 'i simply do not know'

however, i find it interesting that 'perceptions' of the 'same experience' can vary so greatly :: seems that anyone taking the time to read/post/watch, should have more consistent experiences/perceptions :: but, 'what do i know'?

'my personal perception' - from my early viewing of Dolby Vision vs HDR10 (which surprised me when i first noticed it), is that while HDR10 is clearly 4K, that Dolby Vision is 'clearly 5K' - (believe it or not)

i will agree, that this resolution element might be imperceptible/"microscopic at best", although quite obvious/perceptible to me - especially interesting, when many find the difference between HD/UHD 'imperceptible'

Is DV better? Yeah, but by how much? I think there is a lot more psychology and sociology going on in the HDR / DV debate than actual reality.
