Going to have to buy a new receiver. Currently, I'm going out from my 4k player to the TV, running audio through the arc back to the receiver for surround, which outputs as PCM. I bought my receiver six years ago because it promised 4k pass-through, but specs and tech changed to HDMI 2.2, which is fine. My receiver won't pass 4k HDR, it downconverts to 1080 (oddly enough, it has no problem passing upconverted video -- Hugo's blu is upscaled and shows as 4k, while Harry Potter 4k HDR shows as 1080, so I had to bypass the receiver and go straight to the display). I'm not upset by it. I usually figure a ten-year window when buying home theater tech, I just know I'm not getting the benefit of a receiver that can handle new audio codecs and the STRDN840 is doing what it can (PCM).
So I'll be in the market for a more modern receiver later in the year. Not crazy about Atmos, I don't have a man-cave and my wife hates the eight speakers surrounding the living room as it is (no matter how tastefully hidden they are). Putting speakers on the ceiling is a no-go. Just want a solid 7.1 Sony receiver that can pass HDR and DolbyVision signals, with some pretense towards future-proofing. |

UHD Blu-ray uses HDMI 2.0a for HDR. Confusing, I know. The new spec is HDMI 2.1 which is slowly being rolled out with devices. Also wouldn't really recommend a Sony receiver. I've had much better performance with something like Onkyo or Denon. Good price points too. |

Didn't think it was a coincidence that Warner's latest new releases have all been DV, not to mention big catalog releases like The Matrix. Wonder how Heat would have spun this. It would have been interesting to see him explain how the loss of Warner would be a good thing. |

Also, another concept (no blown out or bleached highlights with HDR as compared to SDR) introduced to Blu-ray.com readers ~ 2 years ago (May 2016) as to the value of HDR for the bright (sunny) side of the image - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post12202983

As a complete HDR/4K/UHD novice here who has just made the jump from a 1080p Sony SXRD rear projection set to a brand spankin' new 65" Samsung NU8000 4K display, I had some questions with regard to how my new TV is going to "handle" some of the more advanced HDR algorithms, being that it doesn't support supreme high-end tech like Dolby Vision, etc. (I believe it's equipped with HDR10 or HDR Plus? This is a "premium" 4K TV, but not of Samsung's QLED series of displays; it is from the 8 Series, which is their best line before hitting the QLEDs, if I understand it right...).
Being that I will not be using a UHD player for the immediate time being with the NU8000, what should the HDR settings in the TV be set to? I will be sending a 1080p signal from my Blu-ray player for now, along with a 1080i signal from the cable box, so what should the HDR10 settings in the Samsung be adjusted to? Does it matter? Also -- what happens when I eventually get a UHD player and play discs that boast the "advanced" forms of HDR such as Dolby Vision? Being that the Samsung doesn't have these advanced operations, only HDR Plus/10, would the signal from the 4K disc get "downconverted," so to speak, on my set? And how is that going to look? |
