![]() thanks. ive got the pictures full screen by clicking on them. and the 1080P version has slightly better texture. its really slight, but im pretty sure im seeing it. curious, what tv do you have and do you have your tvs UHD color turned on? ive found that this setting turned on also hurts texture. |

So, are you guys saying that without an HDR display, that the player is doing a better job of upscaling? Although I have not tested the upscaling as of yet, I'm having a hard time understanding how this player does a better job of upscaling than my Sharp TV (LC-60UE30). Gonna have to test this soon, in hopes of convincing myself and seeing it first-hand. From looking at the pics in the above post, i'm liking the 2nd pic at 2160 better.
I don't doubt you guys at all cause I have very little experience in this stuff and am looking for the right (or close to right) answers. So, does the majority say use the K8500 for upscaling or let the TV do it? I know what looks good to me, may not be the norm for most but is there really a norm at this point in the K8500's life? Looking to you guys & gals for guidance. ![]() |

![]() Other than that you are comparing list price to special introductory price, maybe the Samsung will also be a little off in the UK? The free movie is what it is I guess but at least they picked the Fox movie with the most general appeal I think plus as you know it may well be the only current Fox title that is at least partly "real" 4k. But it seems you have your sights set on the Panasonic anyway, what are you still doing in the Samsung thread? ![]() |

Yep, I'm up for the Panny alright. But what are you still doing in here now that you've let your Samsung go? Or has it come back already? ![]() |

![]() Once I relaised that HDR was coming along with the other features and benefits of UHD BD, I sold my 9005A Sony on eBay and got something that would work. Never looked back and now having used this player, glad I did. Is it perfect, no. Will I replace it for an Oppo, yes. But for now it ticks all the boxes for me |

Besides, I'd still need to, y'know, buy a UHD player anyway once I get a fancy new TV, no? Might as well get the former out of the way now, and I've been warned off several times by another Samsung owner that the player simply isn't worth bothering with so why not skip over it and grab the Panny for the better build and spec in general? After all Adrian, you've just said you're gonna ditch it once the Oppo is available and I know of at least one more person who's dumped it already...
And I'm not "clinging" to anything regarding the SDR conversion, as without dynamic metadata that aspect of it is pretty much screwed no matter which player I get, it would simply be a nice bonus if the Panny does it better and/or allows some semblance of finer control over selection of colour space, HDR/SDR etc. I'm not holding my breath though. |

Well, 1080p is clearly the softest looking, as it should be. As for 2160 and auto, it seems to be a contrast/brightness thing (auto is probably too bright). If the setting is supposed to only affect resolution, don't know why that would happen though.

I didn't notice a difference in brightness on screen when taking the shots. Could be a side effect of using a camera on auto mode. Or it just might not have been as apparent on screen, there was a few seconds between taking the shots after all.

And if £600 is the budget for a display, I would look at a different hobby. One that perhaps suits ones financial circumstances
![]() Seriously, who would expect to pay that kind of money for new display technology yet would gladly pay the same for a player. As I said, a fool...... I would stick to DVD if that is all the budget allows ![]() That aside, having used this player again tonight the quality is very, very impressive. Would recommend to anyone interested in getting one. Having said that, I am not so sure of the benefits that can be gained from running this through an SDR display as Resolution is only one small part of the UHD experience. I checked my player out at the 48:16 mark in 1080p as compared to the 2160p setting. 2160p had much more detail when set on 1080p the picture looked flat and not as detailed and bright. I checked it a few times and got the same result. Why is everyone else getting a better picture when the player is set at 1080p is beyond me. I am using Samsung UN65JU7500.
Dynamic picture, Backlight 20, Contrast 100, Brightness 50. The player automatically sets Backlight and Contrast when watching 4K discs. |
