Put me on the list of those with a non-HDR TV but who believe there is still a considerable difference in picture quality and I'm enjoying every bit of it.

Hooked up for about a week now. Here's my set up:

Sony XBR-70X850B (settings)
  • Scene Select - Cinema
  • Picture Mode - Cinema 1
  • Backlight - 7
  • Picture - 93
  • Brightness - 53
  • Color - 51
  • Hue - 0
  • Color Temp. - Warm 1
  • Sharpness - 55
  • Noise Reduction - Off
  • MPEG Noise Reduction - Off
  • Dot Noise Reduction - Off
  • Reality Creation - Manual
  • Mastered in 4K - Off
  • Resolution - 20
  • Noise Filtering - Min
  • Smooth Gradation - Off
  • Motion Flow - TrueCinema
  • CineMotion - Auto
  • Advance Settings
  • Black Corrector - Off
  • Adv. Contrast Enhancer - Low
  • Gamma - -1
  • Auto Light Limited - Off
  • Clear White - Off
  • Live Color - Off
  • White Balance
  • R-Gain - 0
  • G-Gain - -2
  • B-Gain - -2
  • R-Bias - +3
  • G-Bias - -2
  • Detail Enhancer - Off
  • Edge Enhancer - Off
  • Skin Naturalizer - Off
  • Display Speed Preference - Off
Samsung Player (connected to HDMI input 2 via Rocketfish 8' 18Gbps)
  • Picture Resolution - 2160p
  • Movie Frame - Auto
  • DVD 24Fs Conversion - Off
  • Fit Screen Size - Size 4
  • HDMI Color Format - RGB (Enhanced) when playing 4K Blu-ray
  • HDMI Deep Color - Off

As others have reported, it's easy to connect and setup. Still playing around with fine tuning optimal picture settings for my environment. Truth be told, I'm rarely satisfied and will probably adjust based on the film I'm watching. Our couch is approximately 10 feet from the wall mounted TV.

My overall impression in one word, stunning.

I've been to Best Buy three times this week to purchase 4K Blu-rays (it's kinda addictive but with the limited number of titles I should be ok for now.)

Sicario - first 4K Blu-ray I watched. This is one of my favorite films of last year and it was an incredible experience to revisit at home in 4K. The Cinematography by Roger Deakins (a personal fave) is beautiful and all the action sequences look phenomenal. I love the way even the quiet scenes are shot and they equally look great. Just a riveting film from beginning to end. 9/10

The Martian - second 4K Blu-ray purchased and viewed. I feel like there were some exquisitely shot films in 2015 and we are reaping the rewards in 2016 on 4K! I didn't find the picture as hmm, "perfect" as I did Sicario but that doesn't mean it's not great to look at. Colors are beautiful and the picture is sharp. Yes, I know HDR users are probably going, "he hasn't really seen the full effect" and I get that. But for my setup, I enjoyed watching the film in all its 4K glory and will watch it again and again. 8/10

The Revenant - my fifth 4K Blu-ray purchase. Wow. Just wow. Get it. Buy it. Own It. 10/10

I also have Kingsman: The Secret Service and Mad Max: Fury Road. I look forward to watching those soon and reporting back.

I would recommend buying this player if you are thinking about it but are on the fence. I love watching movies in the best possible format (like I'm sure everyone who visits these boards) and I'm beyond happy with being able to enjoy some of my favorite films in this 4K!

A very strange thing I noticed when streaming Netflix 4K with the UHD 8500 and a non-4K projector:
When I have the 8500 resolution set on auto or 1080p all 4K programs on Netflix are displyed in 1080p. All, except for those Flowers, Deserts, Oceans, Mountains videos. When I try to play those only audio plays but no video. Instead a message appears on the screen saying that "My TV is not HDCP 2.2 "...But why would that be so, since I have the player set on 1080p resolution? And why does it only happen with those 4 nature videos, but not with House of Cards or Daredevil?

It's the type of HDCP resolution restraint flag being set on those particular streams. Perhaps it's dictated by the content owners.

FYI, I have seen some report a few frame stutters on UHD discs. The Revenant is the first one I have watched (UHD) and I saw a couple, but it was not a big deal to me.

I'd say looking at the display model and movie variance with the reporting, it is a Sammy bug. Minor, but needs to be fixed nonetheless.

"In some TV's without HDR they are Full LED local dimming (FALD), the result is clearly impressive."

Well, I return to this winning story and dynamic contrast level conversion HDR / SDR on some UHD TV or 1080p.

- All in Full LED Local Dimming tested earn vastly contrasting and dynamic (HX950, Hisense K720, Philips PFL9600)
- LED Direct TV to Global Dimming: any contribution, although the dynamic contrast seems more effective
- Edge LED TV with Local Dimming + Detect Letter.Box: earn much contrast and dynamics, unless the LED Full, but still not bad!
- The Edge LED TV with Local Dimming, but Detec.Letter.Box: Gain is visible, but lighter (Dynamic contrast more effective on many models)
- Sony TV with Advanced Contrast Enhancement and Frame Dimming: visible gain, but not as much as those with Local Dimming
- Edge LED TV without the Local Dimming: no default gain, but a more efficient Dynamic Contrast

It remains to be input in terms of contrast on Plasma and projector.

By cons, 1080p downscaling of BR UHD gives very good results on all 1080p broadcasters, but inevitably the result depends on the quality of BR UHD (Kingsman, Maze, The Odyssey of PI are the ones I tested that bring the most, or even only on Mars. By cons, Mad Max, San Andrea and Pan do not bring as much ...).

This is the link to the 3200...Same thing, HDMI 2.0a HDCP2.2 compliant:
https://usa.denon.com/us/product/hom...vers/avrx3200w
I think he might be referring to the previous models that were not HDCP 2.2 compliant. I got the 3100 and that is mostly the same but missing the following. Dolby Atmos, DTS-X and HDCP 2.2.

The 3100 is advertised as 4k but only the top of the line range got a free HDCP upgrade but those on the lesser models like the 3100 did not. But it is 4k pass through and was advertised as 4k receiver but DENON were cheap and skipped out on the HDCP 2.2 on all the previous models. If I remember correctly At the time HDCP 2.2 was out at that time as well when they launched the 3100 since my LG 4k TV had a HDCP 2.2 port that currently works with my Samsung player and that was launched before the receiver.

No, we already corrected it. As of early March it was still being reported the HDMI 2.0a(HDR) update was coming to models with DTSX updates, and had already been issued to some. That was then changed to state that ALL models already had the proper FW for HDMI 2.0a.

Miscommunication between the people selling the stuff and D&M. When the current models launched we were told HDMI 2.0a hardware was on board, it just needed a FW update. That ended up being 100% wrong. It was hard to tell though because some D&M products were passing HDR fine, others were not, but I think there were other problems in their setups. My X4200W and my current AV7702mkII both work with the Samsung and HDR just fine.

Basically, all current Denon models from the 910 up are HDCP 2.2 compliant

But when I play those same 4 programs (Flowers, Oceans, Deserts, Mountains or whatever) on my Roku 2 device I do get 1080 video...So is it the Samsung 8500 player that is not letting me play those programs even with resolution set at 1080? I don't get it

But yet when I want to watch Vudu 4K using my Roku 4 going through the Denon 910 it sends a message saying its not HDCP 2.2 compatible and will display in 1080. I have used every HDMI input on the receiver. I have the Roku setting to display on a 4K TV.
The only way to by pass this error is go directly through the TV (but only get Dolby Digital and not the Dolby Digital Plus using the HDMI cable). Confusing.
The Netflix 4K and Amazon 4K play fine.

Do you have the Roku set to 4k or 4K 10bit? Mine does not work right with 4K 10 bit.

Are you saying that only VuDu 4K is giving you trouble, but not Netflix or Amazon 4K?

All of this technical talk is making my head spin!

I just pulled the trigger in the Samsung 65 inch curved 6700 series (2015) this past weekend. I have an Onkyo TX - NR609 receiver and some high speed HDMI cables. Am I in good shape to get this player with just what I have? Any recommendations?

Is the Onkyo HDCP 2.2 compliant? If yes, then you should be GTG

Sounds like it. If the AVR is not HDMI 2.0a/HDCP 2.2 you can use the dual outs of the player.

No. It is a bit older. All it has is 4K video upscaling. I guess I need a new receiver then.

What if I got this player, ran it through the TV and just used an optical cable from the TV until I can get a new receiver?

I own the player. It has dual outs, one to send video direct to your display and one to send audio to an non compliant AVR, if you have one.

It's fine. You dont want to use anything less than HDMI audio to your AVR because you will lose lossless audio.

I thought you were talking about the receiver. Sorry. Noob at this.

So one HDMI to the receiver BD input, second HDMI (2.0 this time) to the TV?
