Samsung 4K UHD Blu-ray Player UBD-K8500

Has any of you tried to play Netflix UHD titles through the player's Netflix app on a HD 1080 non-HDCP 2.2 TVs? It seems like the player does not dowwnscale UHD Netflix to 1080 even if you have the player's reolution set to Auto or 1080...
It's really strange because the player DOES downscale UHD blurays to 1080 when connected to HD 1080 TV

Has anyone tried this player on TV Triluminos Sony Bravia W900A type?
If so, that is ? noticeable difference compared to FullHD 1080p?

Or any difference in a wider range of colors or converting HDR to SDR improves the image so subtle? As better contrast or colorimetry? Perhaps with the HD Fury you can be able to improve this.

That is normal for the Netflix app. It doesn't downscale UHD to 1080P on any device.

When I play UHD titles on my Roku device they play just fine, but when I try to play the same UHD titles on the Samsung player tehy dont play at all...Shouldnt the player downscale from 2160 to 1080 in the abscence of a UHD TV being utilized?

So the SAME THING happened to me. It was extremely frustrating and in the end I could not get a disc to play. I called Samsung and after about 15 minutes the customer service rep opened a ticket and asked me to send my player to their repair center. Using the provided UPS label I shipped my unit on Thur. 6/9. It arrived at the repair center this morning (EST). I just received an update (2pm PT) the unit has been fixed and it's being shipped back to me.

Of course my fingers are crossed the issue has truly been fixed. Will report back when it's in my possession.

The only negative thing I have to say about this player is that it won'y play any UHD Netflix titles downscaled to 1080

No device is supposed to be able to do that. I know with the seven 4K streaming devices I have, none of them will downscale Netflix UHD encodes to 1080P.

So how are customers who only have HD 1080 TVs supposed to watch programs like Daredevil and Jessica Jones on this player?? If we can down-convert UHD blurays why shouldnt we be allowed to do the same with Netflix? I am paying for UHD Netflix sub too, by the way.

It's the copy protection flag set in the HDCP 2.2 metadata. You get the 1080p stream if it doesn't handshake with an HDCP 2.2 UHD TV.

Yes, I now realize that. I kinda like the WebOS available on the LG Oled TV anyway...and I always have my Roku 2 has back up

And are downconverted at the studio from 4k files, which are also used for the UHD stream. They do it for you rather than the TV or player.

Still not the same. The 16 Mb/s UHD stream on Netflix gets you close to the BD quality. Which is still nowhere near the quality of a UHD BD. But still much better than their 5.8Mb/s 1080P stream.

Yes, of course, the bitrates and compression leave much to be desired, but for the discussion the OP was having about watching the UHD version downconverted to 1080p via the Sammy UHD player...

That all sounds good...If the Samsung UHD player actually played those streaming titles in 1080

If you output in 2160P the K8500 will play the 2160P streams from Netflix. If you output in 1080P the K8500 will play the 1080P streams from Netflix.
What hasn't been enabled yet is HDR from Netflix on the K8500.

You are correct...But only IF you have a UHD TV or projector. If you have a standard HD 1080, non-UHD TV or projector and try to wacth Netflix UHD content from the K8500 player, you will get a big black screen with a message saying that your display is not HDCP 2.2 (and that's regardless of setting the player on 2160 or 1080)

Do you guys set your 8500 to output in pcm or bitstream if its running through a receiver? Does it make a difference? I've read in bitstream you can't listen to audio commentaries but haven't tried it yet. Thanks!

You want to set the Sammy to unprocessed bitstream. I would rather listen to Dolby Atmos and DTS: X than audio commentaries.

I agree, i could always switch it to pcm when i wanted to listen to a commentary if that is the case. Is the receiver better at decoding the audio than the player is that why you use bitstream over pcm? I'm not questioning your advice I'm just trying to understand the difference. Thanks for the help!
