Some titles refuse to play and they still haven't come out with new firmware to fix them. Some HDR headers are mis-read too. The Samsung plays everything except for the couple problematic discs that have issues due to manufacturing faults... just keep returning until you find a good one if you happen across a bad Crouching Tiger, Catching Fire, or Sicario. That's only 3 titles so far. |

The are still certain Universal discs giving it fits, as well as playback stuttering on random 4k discs. |

I purchased mine from Costco when they first got them in store. So far, the only issue I've had with it is needing to unplug/re-plug the power cable after the last firmware update. Other than that, It has played every UHD disc I've put in (I have an OPPO for 1080p blu-rays).
I have been very satisfied with this player, overall. |

If you're running through a receiver or pre-amp you need one for each connection (player to receiver... receiver to TV). |

The second HDMI port on the Samsung is an audio out port only and used when and if you have a somewhat older receiver without HDCP 2.2 encryption or HDR compatibility. The first HDMI output is video and audio. What you need is a new receiver (has audio processing and built-in amps for most or all of your speakers), or a pre-amp/processor (no built-in amps & requires outboard amplifiers for greater sonic quality and customization). That will gain you: 1) HDMI switching with HDR support (as long as the model chosen has HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 ports). 2) Premium surround decoding and possibly the new Dolby Atmos and DTS: X immersive 3D surround formats. They use separate sound elements called objects tagged with panning and size metadata that can place sound in three-dimensional space with the addition of overhead or height speakers to a 5.1 or 7.1 base system. If you're using a soundbar presently, by also adding separate speakers and a subwoofer your audio reproduction quality and surround immersion can go up quite a bit depending on the makes & models you go with. After all, sound is 60% of the experience. A win-win proposition. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 12-03-2016 at 10:57 PM. |

I don't see anything like what you need listed on Best Buy's web site... one that actually supports HDMI 2.0a (the a part is required for HDR pass-through - the HDMI specs for HDR changed last year.) and HDCP 2.2 encryption (required for 4k) is a few hundred dollars. Your best bet is a new receiver (with the bonus of Atmos and X decoding). Just a switch for around the same price (or a tiny bit less) is a waste of money IMHO. You can still do audio pass-through to the display and use the receiver as a passive switcher in the meantime until you can add speakers to it. Yes. With Deep Color off, 24 fps on Auto, and 24 fps conversion to off. However, depending your display, there may be a setting in the TV's menu that must be enabled to turn on 10 bit color processing (given said display is even capable of it in the first place).

Quote from Samsung's website:
To get the most out of your Ultra HD Blu-ray Player, There are a few Things you will need: •The Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray Player •A UHD TV •A High Speed HDMI Cable •A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Allow me to express my headache but with a question first. So apparently in order to play your 4k Movies off this Samsung player one "needs" a HDR TV? I bought a TV, then bought a Sony 4k Upscaling player; after research I found Upscale is upscale and not True. So I found out the only way to play 4k Movies is off specific players. I bought the Samsung Player (this model; the one in this thread). After hooking it up and putting the HDMI cable into my Port 5 saying 4k @ 60hz I was able to see something on screen. I put in a Blu Ray (standard) and yes it works. But I insert my "Independence Day Resurgence" UHD (4k) movie in and I got 'No Signal' Tweak after Tweak I finally go the UHD movie to play but omgosh the quality is worse than a standard DVD. So I reset all settings back to Factory on Samsung Player. Blu Ray was way better than the 4k UHD movie. So I do even more research. Thinking I got the wrong TV and I did. Fast forward til I got my PS4 Pro. Tried hooking that up and still No signal. After research I was thinking my Firmware was outdated but nope that wasn't the case. Turns out theres a work around on the PS4 pro: *Boot into safe mode, change HDCP to 1.4, restart; then power off. Then boot into safe mode again and change Resolution to 2160; restart and..............yay PS4 Pro Settings is telling me that my TV is doing the 3460x whatever and my HDCP thing is rated 2.2 but my TV don't support HDR (which is fine because the specs agree) The box says "4k Ultra HD" Now what did the above thing say from Samsung? So after reading the last few pages from this thread I needed clarification....I went out and purchased 2 more 4k Movies to test out. First I put in the standard Blu Ray; plays fine! (few seconds into Scene 4) Then I put in the 4k Ultra HD movie into player........... So the Samsung player reads it, displays the title on homescreen and when it loaded I got/saw a message "This Disc has been produced for TVs with High Dynamic Range" and blam back to "No Signal" The Independence Day Resurgence says "HDR" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of Shadows says "HDR" Jason Bourne says "HDR" So I'm having a strong feeling these movies will not play without an HDR TV!! Period! So I'm also thinking that should be a stipulation in which i'll have to contact Samsung. Its a bit misleading really. Or rather very very confusing! The thing of it is; I just barely bought and assembled a TV Stand and purchased a 40inch TV. The TV i'm looking at that does have HDR is a 50inch; in which I'll need to find the right TV stand for my needs and assemble that LOL! Just a pain is all ![]() |
