So how has a Ultra HD Blu-ray rip of The Martian appeared already? Is it because BD-XL drives can read and write disks up to 100GB and The Martian may have been encrypted with older already cracked encryption? Or is it possibly an incorrectly named 4k streaming rip?

I checked it a few times and got the same result. Why is everyone else getting a better picture when the player is set at 1080p is beyond me. I am using Samsung UN65JU7500.
Dynamic picture, Backlight 20, Contrast 100, Brightness 50. The player automatically sets Backlight and Contrast when watching 4K discs.
Only a single person said its better detail at 1080p. Everyone that responded said the opposite.

It's a streaming rip, see The Digital Bits

It's not either, and don't go to them for news, it never helps

you sound like Ives in Great Escape, one more spell in the cooler and you're gonna make a break for the wire! That mightn't be a bad thing, given how poisonous this forum's become just lately. PM me then..

So, those of you who are not running an HDR capable display, is there a consensus on which is best; YCbCr, RGB Standard, RGB Enhanced or just plain Auto?

Cannot say from seeing but the setting that is suppose to be better is YCbCr 4:4:4. The other settings don't take full advantage of Ultra HD Blu-ray. Ideally setting to AUTO would figure out what was best for your set.

Just try each one and see which one works best for you. On my setup I like rgb enhanced for 4k and rgb standard for blu ray. Also don't forget about the settings under your "tools" button, picture mode.

Well looks like I may have solved my skin texture/detail issue.

It seems that my noise reducer on my tv is wreaking complete havoc on these 4k discs. I turned it off and texture and detail just skyrocketed. It's really mind boggling because it does not affect 1080p or lower with it being set to "low". With it turned on causes texture loss on faces and blurriness on faces when people and objects move.

Settings can and do change how they function from res to res, yep. When I do finally get my player I'll be making that sure that all picture enhancement trickery on my TV is set to OFF across the board when comparing the various outputs (that stuff's usually off anyway, but my TV stores different settings for different frame rates, never mind different resolutions, so I like to double check).

The 850c wasn't designed with hdr in mind, so the hdr effect you get is going to be limited to what it looks like compared to the 930c and 940c in the sony lineup. Also has about half the nit brightness as the 930c.
