I just found this online which could explain why I'm having such a problem with the HDR mode setting on my Sony XBR55X850C TV:

The Sony 850C series of televisions are HDR-10 compatible meaning they can interpret the video metadata specific to that format and present an approximate version of it using a wider color gamut (ie. billions of colors). However, due to physical hardware limitations, 850C televisions cannot present the full brightness and contrast of true HDR. This is why they are promoted as being "HDR compatible" and not considered true "HDR-capable".

I'm surprised that other owners of this particular TV haven't run into the same problem.

Hi Movielover ..I have the Sony xbr-55-850c..had it on dynamic for 'the Martian and Spider-Man 2 in 4K and that looked great but then I put the blu-Ray casino royale on and picture was blown out..I had to put it to movie mode because it's a very bright movie.on the remote click tools and try movie mode for blu-Ray and dynamic for 4K

Only a few 2015 models (such as the Sony 940c) can be considered true HDR-capable. The main reason they're not is being the peak brightness is too low. Here's a chart with the peak brightness level of the popular 2015 TVs.

Many of the higher end TVs coming out this year will be HDR Premium certified, which requires they have a peak brightness of at least 1000 nits for LCD/LED. This article explains it more in detail what is required to enjoy HDR in its fullness.

Thanks Joe!! Do you think Dynamic is better than User?

Your right Bruce..that's why I have to put it in Dynamic mode for 4K movies but if it's a bright blu-Ray I have to put it in movie mode or everybody face will be red...movie lover I would say everybody has different taste..what might look great to me might look horrible to you so you have to play around with the settings until you get the picture you like the best

I use dynamic as well but only use the player for UHD movies. Regular BDs I use the Oppo.

That's absolutely true Joe, everybody definitely has different tastes. For myself, I've found that User looks better to me as Dynamic tends to darken the picture just a tad, although it's not that much of a noticeable difference. Have you experienced the same thing that I did though? When you play a 4K movie, does your Picture Mode on the TV automatically switch to HDR mode and makes the picture kind of washed out and cloudy?

What movies look washed out and cloudy? There's plenty of 850c owners on AVS that are very happy with their 4k discs.

Yes movielover...it took me a day or 2 to get my settings where I like the picture for 4K movies but not for blu-Ray 1080...had to change settings for that...I think it's like a doc by disc thing..some movies are bright some movies are dark and you have to adjust accordingly..that's just my opinion...I have watched Spider-Man 2 and the Martian in 4K and both looked great in Dynamic mode .you can see every rock on Mars..stunning picture

Ray, they all look like that when they're in the HDR picture mode setting on the TV which the machine forces it to go to when a 4K movie is played. Did you see my previous posts? No matter which settings I change while it's in the HDR mode, none of them help to make the picture any better. However, yesterday I switched the cable to a new HDMI 2.0a cable and it gave me a message on the screen saying that this machine is connected to a device that is not HDR compatible. Then it switched the Picture Mode to Custom and all of a sudden my 4K movies "popped" and the picture looked spectacular. I had asked if any other Sony XBR55X850C had experienced the same thing.

Nope, just directly to the TV. I run my audio through a Yamaha soundbar.

Hey Joe, do me a favor when you get a chance and switch the Picture Mode on the TV to Custom and I think you'll notice a superior picture. To me it's a huge difference.

I think for it's price it's the best bang for your buck, this whole 4K HDR thing is a little misconstrued. If you spent any time in the AVS Forums last year, you saw all the tirades that were going on over HDR and compatibility.

Thanks for the link, it's missing a few though, surprised the 940c or the 2015 LG's aren't there. I think my next one is going to be the LG G6, little pricey right now though, may just keep the money to the side and get next years model. The improvements between the e9500 and the G6 are great, I can only hope they improve on OLED technology.

Joe, I got it from a seller on Walmart's website.
DVDO 4K Ultra HD HDMI 2.0a PrimePass Cable.
It's a bit pricey but well worth it in my opinion.
Did you try switching the Picture Mode to Custom first?
Try that before spending any more money.
Mike

I have a Seiki 42 inch UHD TV that is NOT HDCP 2.2 compliant. Does anyone know if I bought a HDCP 2.2 to 1.4 converter, would that allow me to play 4K Blu-rays on my tv from the Samsung UHD-K8500? I suspect I am just out of luck with my Seiki Amazon deal of the day, but am reaching out to see if this is a possible work around until I buy a HDCP compliant set. Using a Seiki 4K upscaling Blu-ray player for now with very nice results. Thanks for any enlightenment you can give me on this matter.
