That's why I asked about if the player menu being visible only after coming from the disc was in 24p. Because if it can't display at 60Hz but does at 24Hz (which is half the bandwidth) sounds similar to the HDMI 1.4 / HDMI 2.0 Level B 300Mhz 10.2Gbs limitation vs HDMI 2.0 Level A 600Mhz 18Gbs issue.
Im not sure. It works fine if its plugged directly into my TV with the same cable. The AVR worked fine with 4:4:4 prior to update. It's a Marantz SR6010, which supports 4:4:4 and BT.2020 -- UHD 4K works fine passting BT.2020, which is technically requiring more bandwidth, isnt it?

If I plug the Blu-Ray player into the TV directly, I don't have any issues. But that's not exactly an option for me. The Marantz SR6010 supports 4:4:4 and worked great before 1004. The Marantz passes through BT.2020 perfectly too on UHD4k Blurays. However, when I play a normal one and check signao info on my AVR, its only 4:2:0. Prior to 1004, I was able to run 4:4:4 for normal Blus. :/
Its a miserable situation for all of us who got the fw update.

Not that's much of a consolation, but regular Blu are only in 4:2:0 color, so at least you won't feel like your missing out.

1005 is out today. I never saw 1004. I presume that it is out to correct the big problems some of you had with 1004.

Does 1005 have 4:2:0 output?

It does not. It contains the same output settings.

I think 4:2:0 is not supported by the HDMI standard, that's why regular Blu ray players output video as 4:2:2, 4:4:4 or RGB. I've never seen a device with an HDMI port which outputs 4:2:0 video.
But beware, I think, I'm not positive about that.

That's not the reason. It's a manufacturer's choice whether component video is converted from 4:2:0 at the source media to 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 in the player or the display.

The display then converts that upsampled signal to RGB. It's a better conversion if component video is 4:2:2 or 4:4:4.

I just received my UK Samsung UBD-K8500 player today and got the Martian bundled with it. It was not advertised with it on the store I brought it from.

I did a search after I and which I spotted an article I apparently missed that the UK was getting the Martian 4k. Oh well. Shipping cost back to France for the Martian.

Eddie was right in one respect: 4:2:0 was NOT part of the pre-HDMI 2.0 spec which is why all the standard Blu-ray players up until now (and even a UHD one! ) haven't offered it as an output option re: chroma subsampling.

Only with the advent of HDMI 2.0 was 4:2:0 finally added, and even then only for 50/60p, mindful as they are of the 10.2 Gb/s bandwidth limitation on HDMI 2.0 'lite' equipment.

^ And, unlike Samsung, Panasonic are aware of this limitation which is why on their player the subsampling for 4K50/60p can be set separately to 4:2:0, while the main 4K24 4:2:2/4:4:4 subsampling output remains in place for such content.

This will hopefully avoid the handshaking problems that some have experienced with the Samsung, which is kicking out a 4:4:4 4K60p signal on the menu/splash screens and potentially causing issues with 10.2 Gb/s HDMI chips that simply can't process the player's signal until someone actually plays a disc.

I think I just read on the Pan Man-ual that when in 4:2:0 HDR would go off? Hope not, that troubled me.

Yes, it says

When connected to a device or terminal that supports 4K (50p/60p) 4:2:0 (8bit) and lower, this unit plays back 50p/60p content by applying Dynamic Range Conversion to its HDR signals to output them.
but that will only affect the displays which have the 10.2 Gb/s HDMI chipsets that max out at 4:2:0 4K50/60p, and as far as I know there aren't too many HDR-capable displays out there with the 'lite' HDMI 2.0.

And for the ones that do have that particular combo of tech it won't affect the vast majority of HDR UHD viewing anyway because most movies are made at 24fps.

But what about a fabulous 4K 60fps Olympics HDR UHD set for those poor souls?
No Olympic flame tips at 10,000 nits?

i have a js8500 tv and using the movie mode. i was confused to find the samsung player has it's own modes to choose from, mine is now on dynamic, it makes the image brighter where it needs to be (such as the lights on the suit during the storm scene in the martian) without changing the overall image too much. but how can changing the modes make the image brighter when the backlight/contrast is already maxed? hdr looked mediocre for the martian before now it looked a lot better for that 1 scene alone on dynamic.

i tried putting it to movie, so it matched my tv, still looked different though and made the hdr look disappointing. any advice? also what do i have the color set to, rgb standard rgb enhanced ycbr4:4:4 or auto? need some help please. also bdwise doesnt work for me in the uk even though my tv supports it and it turned to ON on my tv settings the player wont let me activate it, says my tv doesnt support it.
