I want the best image, so whatever gets me the least processing/image manipulation is what I'm after.
Rule of thumb is to set everything either to Off or Auto (when Off is not available) in the Picture Settings Menu

Isn't that pretty much the default settings?

FAQ (Questions and Answers from Owners):

Q: Do the player's apps support HDR?
A: Currently, no. An update is rumored to be coming some time in May. Currently the VUDU app does not support UHD playback.

Q: How do you disable HDR on the player?
A: You don't. Or watch the blu-ray version. (Stanton)

Q: What do you set the Deep Color option on for this player?
A: Leave it OFF, it is not needed.

The UHD Blu-ray movies are mastered in 10-bit color.

The player outputs 10-bit color with it OFF. (12-bit if it's ON) (Stanton)

Setting Up/Connecting the K8500

Method 1: When your AVR supports HDR Passthrough

1. Run a High Speed HDMI cable from HDMI output 1 (Main) of the player to a supported HDMI jack on your receiver. Run a separate High Speed cable from your AVR out jack to a supported input on your TV.
2. Set HDMI audio Output in the player to Auto.
3. Set Digital Output to bitstream.

Method 2: When you are using a receiver that does not support HDR passthrough:

1. Run HDMI 1 directly to an appropriate port on your television. Run HDMI 2 to your receiver. Set HDMI audio output to HDMI 2.
2. Set audio to Bitstream Unprocessed if your receiver decodes lossless audio codecs Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio. Set audio to PCM if your receiver does not decode Lossless audio codecs.

Recommended Player Settings for video: Posted by THEBIGWET (post 3644)

*** This is for 4K Ultra HD BD viewing in HDR with Wide color Gamut ***

On the K-8500:

Settings > Picture > Tv Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Original
BD Wise: Off (Only applicable to Samsung Displays. Player and display must be directly connected. When on in the player the 8500 will output standard Blu-ray at 1080p.)
Resolution: Auto ( or 2160p for 4K Ultra BD and 1080p for BD. This will make the TV do the upscaling. It upscales better than the player.)
Movie Frame (24Fs): Auto
DVD 24Fs Conversion: Auto
Fit Screen Size: Size 4 ( Your choice ) (Only applies to screen mirroring and Smarthub)
HDMI Color Format: YCbCr(4:4:4)
HDMI Deep Color: Off

Preference setting:
Standard Mode, or while a movie is playing hit the Tools button and select user picture mode and set everything to mid point (zeroes).

need some help, I just bought a "refurbished" unit on eBay and got it today. All I get is a blinking red light when I try to power it up. I'm guessing the unit is DOA. Damnit. And I had to wait for over a week to get it and now the long return process and trying to get money back from seller. Is there something that I'm missing?

so I now have the player working but it seems like my 30 ft HDMI cable from my receiver to the JVC is the hiccup. Any setting other than the very basics renders it useless. I can't select 2160 resolution on the player or the Deep Color. Otherwise I lose picture immediately. My HDMI cable is 4k ready so not sure why it's acting up. Any suggestions?

Does he mean "When you are using a receiver that is HDCP2.2 compliant"?

He means what he wrote-when your receiver doesn't support 4K HDR, send the video straight to your tv and the audio straight to your receiver.

My receiver is HDCP2.2 compliant. Does that mean that it might not necessarily support HDR?

the receiver needs to support HDMi 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 to have HDR capability.

In that case he should have just said that or it might create some confusion

That's what "does not support HDR pass through" means.

I think it would be best worded as "doesnt have HDMI 2.0a" to avoid confusion

I just got an email from Crutchfield, stating a $369 price. I'm on the fence on getting one or waiting for the PS4K.

They dropped the price that quickly, I really wish I had waited a month to get this rather than paying $500 dollars for it at Best Buy.

Quickly? The K8500 has been out for over four months. BestBuy first started selling it around February 10th. For $400 here in the US.

I got one from HHGregg for $351 back in late March. It replaced the one I paid retail price for from BestBuy around February 10th. They had been selling for around $280 brand new from someone recently. I think it may have been Buydig? Not sure though.

Definetely worth at least $200 due to how versatile and multi-functional this player is

Just purchased the Costco version of this player for $350. The only difference is the model number (UBD-KM85c) and comes with an HDMI cable.

Watched a couple of movies on it last night and the HDR picture quality is spectacular!

Should have waited for this. I'm a Costco member too. However, I kind of made up the difference (got mine for $369 at HH Gregg) when Target.com screwed up a while back and sold the Ghostbusters 2 UHD Blu-ray for $9.
