I didn't have any issues before when I had the player connected directly to TV and the 2nd HDMI to soundbar, must have something to do with the new receiver and the pass thru connection.
I was referring to playing 4k movies with 1080 resolution. If you had a non- 4k tv and attempted to play 4k movies you would get a very dark picture and kill all details in dark scenes

Rocky are you using the remote or did you buy something diff? I remember reading about a universal remote folks liked, the FF/rewind functions are frustrating I'm ready to try something different.

I'm using the original remote. I hate it but I never think of getting another one. They are available even on Amazon for real cheap. I guess I am not too bothered by the small remote, but it is crappy

I too have a Sony 6500, it's a tank!
I was referring to people with the brilliannt idea of playing 4K discs on the Samsung player connected to a HD 1080 television or projector. I thought it was doable but it's really a big mess

It's not that bad. Not perfect, but not bad at all.

If you dont care about losing virtually all details in the dark scenes, sure

I've done it and plenty of people have done it, and although it wasn't 4k it was still a slight upgrade from 1080p. Maybe you just had a shitty 1080p display ?

Some UHD discs only have an immersive audio track. That's probably why.

You are correct about the dark picture but it is fixable. I did a lot of A-B on the Revenant UHD and BD between 2 players and discovered the Samsung UHD is outputting 0-255 no matter what you set for color format (YUV, RGB std, RGB enc). If I set the black level to "high" on my TV (55EG9100 OLED), the details aren't crushed and match the standard BD. Not ideal but considering I have less than 10 UHD movies, I can deal with it.

This is what some people without 4K tvs do: They know the Samsung CAN play 4K discs on their non-4K TVs. They are mostly into audio and dont want to upgrade to 4K/HDR, but most of new movies in Dolby Atmos are available exclusively on the 4K disc, the HD disc included is only in DTS-H.
So by playing the 4K disc on their non 4K TVs they still manage to get Dolby Atmos sound.
What some of them dont know is that the quality of the picture will be way below what they get with the regular HD version

No. You're the only one I've seen spreading this misinformation. There is no loss of detail. The image is just a bit darker but like it was just mentioned, that can be fixed.

It's not a slight upgrade, but you wont know until you test the two discs (UHD and HD) on a same scene for yourself, preferably a dark scene. You will change your mind
