Ok, i think i get it. I think the confusion comes in when you factor in the desire to have your TV do the upscaling over the K8500 doing the upscaling. Not everyone wants this. Not everyone knows there's a difference.
I personally just got my KS8000 and have been told (not actually tested myself) it does a better job at up scaling 1080p content to 2160p than this particular player does. That may not be true. I do not have a 4k BD disc to test it yet, only playing standard 1080p discs at the moment. |

I have a 40'' Philips 4K T.V. set and the Samsung player and I can tell a difference between the Samsung player and the T.V. doing the upscalling to 4K. I do prefer the Samsung doing the upscalling, the Philips T.V. set seems to be adding edge enhancement to the upscalling.

So this player and the Phillips aren't completely region free? I read reviews that stated both were region free despite the box saying region A.
I bought both players in Canada and tried a few region B discs. So far: "More" and "Betty Blue" worked. "Puzzle of a Downfall Child", "Mona Lisa", and "Possession (1981)" wouldn't load. Bummer. I guess I have to keep my crappy Seiki. |

That doesnt sound like a bad tool to use...Sometimes objects that are not very upclose to the camera do appear a little 'flat' or out of focus

EE looks like sh-t. It's just added noise to the image to fake detail that wasn't there in the first place. And what you call backgrounds that are out of focus and foregrounds that aren't, I call depth of field. Look it up.

I have a Sony projetcor which comes with a similar feature Sony calls Reality Creation...When it is off only objects close to the lens of camera look razor sharp, but objects a few feet further back look almost like my focus adjustment is off. Once I turn RC on all objects, regardless of distance from the cameras look razor sharp. Now I am curious if this can work the same way on my TV with the Samsung player

Turn all that stuff off, the left picture of the lion looks much better, more natural. Are you saying the right picture looks better?

Well that is just an exagerated example of what sharpness can do, taken to the next level. But the right amount of sharpness won't look like that, but it will make things on the screen look more 'in focus'

Well, once I get a 4k Blu Ray to test the difference I will be able to decide. I'd prefer this option, of course.
I just need to figure out what uhd disc will make it easy to distinguish. Really wish Disney would have been on the 4k BD bandwagon by now. |

Even if changing from Auto to 1080 gave me 0.5% better upscaling, I dontt hink it is practical having to constantly access the picture menu every single time we go from watching UHD to HD and back

You must have alot of 4k BDs.
Heh, I don't plan on buying them that often, at least not at full price. |
