Some folks love it, some hate it. I'm in the former group. I've had no issues and think the player is great. There is a newer version out that might come in a bit cheaper but know there's no 3D support in the new model.

Skim through this thread to see where the haters stand and make a choice if a few of the other models are worth considering for potentially a few dollars more.

I have this player as well as the LG. As far as features and available apps, the Samsung blows the LG out of the water. LG currently has Netflix and Youtube, whereas the Samsung has tons. One downside is that the Vudu app on the Samsung doesn't do UHD. The LG is a bit quieter in regards to disc spin-ups, and the Samsung seems to have a more "drill-like" sound, but it doesn't last forever and usually is only at the start of a disc or when you restart a previously playing video.

Keep on the lookout for sales on this player, especially since the new models are rolling out. You can even check out Best Buy for open box returns, and I've seen the K8500 open box there for $160-180. Overall I'd say its definitely worth it to get one so you can really get the most out of your 4K set.

Is picture quality identical when playing HDR discs?

I have the Samsung and replaced it with the LG last week. I absolutely hated the Samsung. Yes, it does have more apps than the LG (for now) and yes, it does have a nicer menu, but I had nothing but problems with that thing. Some discs not playing, weird video artifacts and the biggest issue I've had with it is lipsync issues. And of course the remote is absolutely atrocious.

If you can get the Samsung for a good price, maybe. But its not worth 200+ in my opinion. I paid close to $250 and it was the worst investment ever.

How's the HDR quality of LG player by comparison?

For those wondering if you should get it or not. I personally love this player and have never had any issues with any discs (4K, BD and DVD). I just saw the price is now under $200, I believe I paid almost $400 on release date. Definitely a great player.

My complaints are minor. It vibrates some with Passengers 4K, but not enough that it bothers me. The living room player locks up with the BD of Terminator 2. The bedroom player, it does not. I don't know why that is. Problem will be solved when the 4K movie comes out.

And yes, the remote sucks. It's too small.

Other than that, it works great.

I have this player and I haven't had a single problem with the player. I did have my first disc freeze on me last while watching Kong. I wiped the disc clean and it played flawlessly for the whole movie. It was the disc at fault, not the player. I paid under $200 for the player last March. I'm happy with it.

I have not purchased a 4K player yet, and Best Buy is selling this as their DODT for $150. I have seen mixed feedback on this post, so would you recommend this being a good investment or should I wait until fall for a deal on a better player?

It's not a bad player but you probably could do much better by waiting till the fall.

I'm also on the fence on buying a separate player and wondering what you feel is coming in the fall that is better PaulGo?

Some are waiting to see if Sony will update their players to Dolby Vision. Others want to see what CEDIA might bring in the way of announcements for 2018 models.

And others will buy the Oppo 203 now...

I don't believe any new player will be coming out, but the prices of the current players should be lower around Thanksgiving. Currently the player that I think is the best value for the money is the Sony X800. The lowest current price it at Costco for $239.99, but should be below $200 during the holiday season.

I agree with PaulGo, I've had a Samsung UBD K-8500 for over a year and a couple of months ago got a Sony UBP X-800 and it's a much better player.

Thanks for the quick reply. Definitely agree that the holidays are the best time to pick up electronics. I just don't look forward to needing a new receiver once I do. That begins a new headache and it took me long enough to pick up a tv

Would you mind elaborating a little? I'm particularly curious about pq and color. Thinking of switching to that Sony or oppo down the road.

There's nothing wrong with the PQ of this player. Absolutely nothing at all. People are reading off the old script, when the player had some sort of chroma bug, which has since been fixed. I noticed a dramatic increase in PQ on firmware 1010. I got a chance to compare with the Sony X800 and the LG player after thet update to firmware 1010, and there's literally no difference in terms of the image between the K8500 and those other players.

I still do hate the remote, though. Also, it can get pretty noisy at times.

Picked this blu ray player up today At CEX in the UK for £150.00 an absolute bargain its in minted condition and is Graded A. They aslo are selling graded B ones for only £125.00. amaing value. They have a few other UHD players from Panasonic and Lg. Hope this helps anyone looking for a Cheap UHD player.

I purchased this player at launch, besides the awful remote, it's been pretty solid for the most part. Does anyone think an upgrade to the Panasonic 900 would be worth it?

Also, does anyone use a streaming box like Roku? Was curious if the box would be an upgrade over the samsung player (ease of use, speed, up to date apps, etc)?

Thanks for any advice!
