Sorry for the dumb question but how do you know if your TV is HDR compatible and if it is, should Deep Color be turned ON or OFF?

To add to this, Ultra HD Premium certification has two separate criteria for this.
  • More than 1000 nits peak brightness and less than 0.05 nits black level (most LED sets); or
  • More than 540 nits peak brightness and less than 0.0005 nits black level (Such as OLED that can't reach as high a brightness as LED can but can go much much darker than LED)

I'm really looking forward to reviews of all of this years new sets. OLED to see what the input lag is like, if any of them are 35ms or less I'll jump on one. And the other I'm really looking forward to is the Panasonic DX900. I read a foreign review in translate that said it was better than the JS9500, which is arguably the best TV out right now and it's black levels were closer to OLED than any LED to date thanks to the honeycomb backlight set up.

Guys just got The Martian and when I put it into the 4k Player it says "Cannot play this disc. Ensure the playback side is not damaged and wipe the disc with a soft cloth"

I have tried normal blu-ray movies and they work fine.

Sounds like something that would happen to me.

I just shut the player off and turned it back on. works fine now

So I have the 4K player hooked directly to HDMI1. Should I have HDMI UHD Color on or off?

Was able to get The Martian, Kingsman, and Scorch Trials today at the Best Buy in Enfield CT. Now I got the 4K player, some 4K discs and a 4K tv. Can't wait for the weekend! Unfortunately I don't have a hdr 4K tv however I'm still gonna enjoy the hell out of this.

Posted the following in the Panasonic DMP-UB900 thread in response to a Pro-Con question. Can a Samsung owner provide answers in regards to turning off the noise reduction during BD and/or UHD BD playback?

Quote:
There may be some changes made in Samsung UHD BD players compared to their standard BD players. Need some clarification. From page 33 of the Samsung UBD-K8500 manual.

Quote:
Picture Mode

- User : Lets you adjust the sharpness and noise reduction function respectively.

| NOTE |
  • When you use the BD wise function, this menu will not appear.
Does anyone know what exactly BD wise function means? It appears to me that the User settings are not available when playing a BD disc. Wonder if the same applies to UHD BD disc?

Yeah the BD-Wise function is only available between the Samsung player and a Samsung TV, one of those deals where is gives a better picture. I can't be more specific since my player is hooked up to a Sony TV. But that's what it says it's for in the menu.

Ok I just went into the menu for you and here are the user settings for picture mode during playback:

Sharpness 0 to +10
Noise Reduction 0 to +10
Contrast -10 to +10
Brightness -10 to +10
Color -10 to +10
Tint G10/R10 and gets higher for each one depending on which way you go with the slider adjustment.

Hope this helps.

Default So I scored two 4k blu ray movies!

The first BB I went to, the one 10 min from me and the supervisor said no he would not sell. I call the BB 25 min away and ask if I can even buy them before I make the drive and they said sure no problem ( I should have called the one 10 min from me first but oh well).

In any case, I now have The Martian and Kingsman. My wife and I will watch The Martian tonight and I'll get back to posting a full review soon. I did pop the disc in quickly to view a few minutes of 4k vs blu ray and initially, I was floored. The colors alone are incredible. I'm very excited indeed.

Like I said, I'll post a review of the player plus the movie viewing as soon as I can.

One cool thing with this player is with the Anynet+ setting enabled I can use my LG magic remote to control the player.

You can order them on Best Buy's site and select store to pick up at. I had to do that here in Dallas. They said release date for Kingsman and The Martian are Sunday Feb. 14th and they will be at store then but wait for email to confirm they are in stock. Looks like the higher end (with Magnolia) stores will carry these because I asked manager at a Best Buy in a lower income area and said they will not be stocking these new discs even though they sell the UHD TVs.

You have a Samsung UHD TV? I am thinking the SUHDs are the ones with HDR. I have the JU7500 and I believe it does not have HDR on it (this model is the one below the new JS9000 series of SUHD). You may contact Samsung Support for your question.

So the Best Buy near me (Florence KY) only shows as having Wild and Kingsman for release date pickup, but the only movies I really wanted because I've put off seeing til now are Martian and Fant4stic. dammit!
