It's these kind of bluray transfers, that push the limits of what it can do, that i can't wait to see how a 4K version will compare. Those are the real test.

For my part, Sicario is the title I'm most interested in out of the first batch to see the best of the opening titles.

4K DI? Check. Cinematographer-involved HDR? Check.

I haven't seen this movie on blu yet, returned my copy, to await the UHD version.

And the Atmos upgrade (Asian disc) over the 5.1 USA version is appreciable.

As it relates to UHD, what is 'HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color' (LG lingo)?

My 2015 LG has that as an option, but I know it's not exactly HDR.

Description says HDMI 1 & 2 are 4K@60Hz (4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0).

That sounds important, but I'm a bit clueless now that TVs seem to have turned into computers.

Is this 'Deep Color' thing somewhere in between SDR and HDR?

Are they going to eventually remap HDR down to something reliably useful on existing sets?

If I hooked up a UHD player at some point, I honestly have no idea what I would be getting and if it would be accurate color-wise.

At the end of the day, it's just a nice presentation of the film you wanted to see.

Color Accuracy is dependent on your calibration.

Is anyone having lipsync issues on this player? Specifically on the VUDU app and video files on flash drives. I've tried rebooting the player, but the issue is still there. Discs work fine. The Amazon app works fine. But for whatever reason, VUDU and the USB drive keep having that problem.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm using one HDMI cable to my Denon 2200 receiver. No dual HDMI setup.

Some displays are describing UHD Deep Color as a setting that turns on the 10 bit properties of some panels. Samsung displays use a different terminology. There is no consistent verbiage in the A/V industry, which makes things confusing.

Deep Color in the player itself should be left off as it pertains to a never used feature of regular Blu-ray.

Didn't see it in the manual. Can you have the player send the signal to the TV rather than have it upscale to 4k?

Manually set the resolution to 1080p so the TV upscales?

I performed a factory reset (holding down the stop button on the K8500) and I tried different powering up methods. I'm using HDMI 3 on my JS8500.

TV, AVR both off and powered on the K8500...powered up green lit
TV on HDMI 1 (STB) powered K8500...blinking red light
TV on HDMI 1, AVR on HDMI (K8500 HDMI audio only) powered K8500...blinking red light
TV on HDMI 3, AVR on HDMI (K8500 HDMI audio only) powered K8500...green lit
TV on HDMI 2, AVR on HDMI (K8500 HDMI audio only) powered on K8500...green lit

I tried different configurations of powering on off my devices. It seems intermittent. Strange. Wondering if I should try another unit because I don't see anyone experiencing the blinking red light currently. It seems like it's not locking on signal or something.

I missed this in a theater but blind pre-ordered it because I liked Del Toro and Blount in The 2010 Wolfman. The solid reviews played a hand in it also.

Alright guys, I finally sat down and watched an entire movie on the K8500.

No problems at all. Lightning fast loading, no audio dropouts, no PQ issues, no layer split, no audio lag (despite using dual HDMI), etc, etc, etc.

Surely not the same as being an early BDP adopter at all. THAT, for me, anyway, was a mess in comparison.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but my K8500/JS8500 make beautiful music together. Combined with my 6500K bias lighting to eliminate my LED/LCDs minor clouding due to the maxed out backlight (hey, go take your OLED elsewhere, the good ones werent out when I bought this TV) - I'm getting amazing, inky blacks, and powerful banding-free colors. Do not miss my plasmas (heresy, I know!)

My only nitpick is bringing up the pop-up menu while you're watching a movie also brings up the info display on the K8500 - haven't figured out how to shut that off yet from popping up automatically.

"The Martian" was a spectacular movie to me in and of itself, and the 7.1 DTS mix was EXTRAORDINARY. I don't have an Atmos/DTSX capable receiver yet, not that this movie has the mix, but - whew, can't imagine what the additional soundfield would be like.

2K DI/master or not, to my eyes, it is superior to the bluray disc version - which is still beautiful, I'm not taking anything away from that - the 1080p is fully watchable. But if presented with the option, now that I have the capability, I would pick the UHD over the BD every time.

Our Samsung Set Up is as follows:

4K UHD HU7250 Series Curved Smart TV - 65” Class
4K UHD K8500 4K UHD Blu-ray Player
and HW-J7500 Wireless Multiroom Curved Soundbar w/ Wireless Subwoofer

Not usually an early adopter, I thoroughly researched and spent hours at Best Buy before jumping in at the deep end. Unaccustomed to having funds available and experiencing a financial windfall - the rest is history. Absolutely NO regrets at all.

As JJ has indicated this is not a repeat of the early days of Blu-ray. 4K UHD manufacturers have done all they possibly can to avoid mistakes of the past. 4K UHD Blu-ray discs are a joy to watch and yes - I love and respect Blu-rays as they up-convert brilliantly on 4K UHD - but the full potential will soon be realized as more 4K Digital Interface Masters are released to disc.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs purchased & watched to date:

The Martian
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Exodus - Gods and Kings

I played around with it some more yesterday. It's the screwiest thing. VUDU works fine....on titles with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. Anything regular DD 5.1 or less(like DD Stereo) has lipsync issues. I have a few titles in both my VUDU and Amazon Instant Video libraries like Silence of the Lambs and Enchanted that feature DD 5.1 audio. They have lipsync issues on VUDU but work fine on Amazon.

And then the player is completely FUBAR on video files I've tried to play on my flash drive. I tested out several ones that work fine on my Oppo 103 player and all of them have lipsync issues. And I tested out a copy of The Terminator where I added the laserdisc mono track to a rip of the Blu-ray transfer and the player literally couldn't recognize the mono audio. Both PCM and Unprocessed modes wouldn't play that audio track. That same file plays without any issues on the Oppo.

Has anyone else had these kinds of issues? I guess I could swap out players next week when Best Buy starts to carry them in stores, but I have a feeling this isn't a faulty unit. I think it's just a glitch that needs to be fixed via firmware. It's too randomly isolated to be chalked up to a defective player. Thankfully it does seem to work fine with discs and most of the apps, but it's a pain in the butt to have to switch back and forth between players when I wanna watch something on VUDU or via the USB port.

Anyone? If this trick really works, this would be a nice workaround to get Dolby Atmos on future FOX titles.

Actually got a not too bad review from HDD "Recommended"

PROS

  • Fast
  • Reasonable price (for a first gen device)
  • Plays all physical media
  • Tons of streaming apps
  • Easy setup and updates
  • 2 HDMI outputs (one for non-4K AV Receivers)
  • Terrific Samsung integration (turns on Samsung TVs, will change their inputs)

CONS

  • Some apps not yet working to full potential
  • DLNA spotty at best
  • Some odd default settings
  • Wish Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD MA bitsteaming options were separate
  • Remote too small for some hands
  • Settings Menu access takes too many clicks

Well, right now DTS-X Neo-X decoding is screwed up. Best to decode DTS-MA to PCM and let the Dolby Surround Upmixer do the job in Atmos setups.
