I use dynamic mode on the player. I want the extra pop and fortunately the new format can handle it without causing excessive negative effects like it would on lessor formats. Although I will sometimes notch it down to standard mode at night (depending on the movie).

Has anyone here with a nonhdr set have any better setting than rgb enhanced or is that clearly the setting that seems to best for the player?
On sdr sets?

My thoughts exactly. With 1080p sdr it would ruin the picture.

Which has me really intrigued to see if oppo or other high end players can do a better job of squeezing out all the detail or color from the disc.

I'm curious about that too. With Blu-ray all players output the same PQ, none is really better than the other. But don't know if that will hold true of UHD (given the other parameters like HDR used and other settings are held constant between players).

This is where I disagree.

I've seen alot of people comment about pq on different players.

My oppo has some very powerful chips built in and if you take advantage of those chips it can change the picture. For my oppo, I keep darbee at 25%, contrast at +4, and edge enhancement at +3 and I'm telling ya it pulls so much more detail out of the picture and gives more pop and a cleaner picture too than with everything turned off. With my samsung, its weak at pulling out the fine details (sony is best at this), so using the darbee gives it a Sony like picture. Samsung tvs are a little soft compared to sony.

Am testing...

Player,

Dynamic
4:4:4

On Martian.

My SDR is half baked. It's not full array. Seeing how bad or "off" colors are on these settings. Will report back.

Color ain't bad but noise is with this so back to Standard, 4:4:4

I am assuming 444 is ycbr correct?

The best ive seen on my display is rgb enhanced and dynamic on dark movies, standard on others. Or like others mentioned dynamic on all uhd.

I don't think we disagree. I did say equal PQ with settings on both players the same. Darbee is an enhancement (which I have too, but not built in to the Oppo) so not an apples to apples comparison.

Correct

I used "enhanced" on 4 films yesterday with standard Picture setting in player.

I tried 4:4:4 with Dynamic. I would need to use DNR to get rid of the noise & I ain't doing that. Nu uh..

So basically the best PQ for me is either Enhanced or 4:4:4. Both look very very similar so far.

If I like 4:4:4 on Exodus, it'll be my go to player setting for any content.

I think the question should be: Why is Samsung delivering almost all of their stock to Best Buy?

For real? The very dark intro to Days of Future Past is what turned me off from RGB Enhanced. It looked awful with that setting.

Dont you have a hdr display?

I do not own that movie but from what ive seen, if rgb enhanced is dark i cant imagine what ycbr is. Enhanced takes care of my dark issue no problem. Then it is just a matter of preference as to setting the player to dynamic or standard.

Are you on a non-HDR display? I didn't realize that. My bad.

Im curious to know what you think about ycbr with exodus. This movie was what sold me on enhanced as well.

If the sun would go away... lol

I tried a few attempts (even with the distracting glare coming in the window) but from what I am seeing both "Enhanced" & Ycbr look near identical. Maybe less noise & less darkness in low light scenes.

Why I like using this film more then any other is because all light has to be natural light. No electricity in 300 BCE.

Last night watched it Enhanced & yeah I almost put down the remote for good.

Will report back which I prefer.

Try to find a really dark scene. That is really the only striking change i see between the two. Pick out a few dark shadows of people and then watch it on enhanced. Maybe im crazy but it lightens it up just enough to not be too dark.
I wish someone else could confirm this.

Again this is on a nonhdr display

The TV instantly changes to HDR mode when it recognizes the signal. The screen cuts out in between the opening scene into the menu but will come back up after a few seconds. I then tested out regular Blu-rays and the colors were having problems. Peoples faces were extremely red instead of slightly pink. So I turned the picture to Auto instead of 4:4:4 in the player. This corrected the color issue on regular Blu-rays. I did notice that the HDMI handshake is somewhat finicky. I use a receiver for passthrough so I watch cable and play video games through the same HDMI port to the TV. There's a handshake issue if you start out from another source and then switch to the 4K Blu-ray player source. I had to turn off the TV with the 4K Blu-ray source selected. Then turn the TV back on so it could successfully handshake.
What is this new "handshake" expression that I'm seeing lately? Is this the new cool expression? I've never heard of it up to a few days ago. Where do you guys get these things from? I'd really like to know!

Handshaking has been around the computer field for over 10 years.
