Watched this last night with my son.. Been a bit since I watched it. What a great movie.

I thought the transfer looked great and was a huge improvement over the old Blu ray. One of my fav HD releases so far.

Thumbs up

This is an oppressively dark movie in places, but beautifully so..

Even on an LG C7 OLED watching the UHD Blu-ray I thought the dark scenes looked amazing, so natural; and given Clint's tendencies towards natural lighting, there's little doubt in my mind that this is very faithful and that not everything in the frame was intended to be seen.

I'm usually very sensitive to black crush (in fact I often prefer it when blacks in the shot are raised just a tiny touch above the black bars), but this UHD just nails it. Again, I keep coming back to this word, but natural just seems to be the most appropriate way to describe the darkness (and the colour too).

This is the first Anamorphic/Film based transfer I've watched through in 4K on my new OLED and the grain was wonderful, puts a lot of modern shot-on-film movies to shame.

As awesome as it is, do not try watching it with the lights on! ..even on an LCD or ASBL-Disabled OLED. While it usually goes without saying to anyone interested in a reference image, this is a lights-off movie if ever there was one.

When sitting to watch a movie I usually have a pair of LIFX bulbs out of view on either side of the room with warm light @ 1% (just for a touch of warmth and ambiance) and a third one behind my TV set to 6500k @ ~15% to act as a mild bias light. For this I was compelled to turn the two warm bulbs off and drop the bias light to ~5%.

Now we need Outlaw Josey Wales.

I'd cry if Warner released Josey Wales in a beautiful 4K remaster... and then bastardised it with that 5.1 remix.

Just watched the 4K version and it looked good, but was too dark. Popped in the accompanying Blu-ray for comparisons sake, and found myself liking the look of the blu over the 4K version.

It was DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARK theatrically. The 4K replicates that.

Didn't feel like going over 50+ pages to find out what this UHD is like.
Is this demo worthy? The main reviews say that there is little difference in details between the 1080p and 2160p because the detail is not present at the source? What's the deal?

Depends what your definition of demo worthy is. Its one of the greatest westerns of all time and the UHD is the best it’s ever going to look. I watched it 2 weeks ago again. It’s why I upgraded.

It's a fantastic disc, much more than just a subtle upgrade IMO. It's one of my favourites.

Was it filmed on 35mm? In other words, is the UHD grainy as hell like 3:10 to Yuma or Crouching Tiger?

The review is comparing it to the remastered Blu-ray that's included, not to the original Blu-ray release like you're showing.

Here's what the reviewer meant: http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a...101405&i=0&l=0

Those fulscreen comparisons seem to be really close. The BD is holding his own there!

Sadly, the remastered Blu-ray is exclusive to the 4K release. So in either case, you'll get an upgrade with the 4K release.

The remastered bluray release is actually overall more pleasing to the eye than the UHD based on those comparison screenshots

Doesn't matter, because as Roonan says in the post above you: the remastered Blu-ray is exclusive to the 4K release so you cant buy it separately.

The comparison shots don't treat the UHD disc nicely, as they do not properly show the HDR of the UHD disc.

Like you said in a later post, Rocky will still have to upgrade to get the remastered Blu-ray. The UHD is clearly still better though, fine detail on clothes and better grain management in the sky for example. Also no black crush on the UHD.
