Be your own judge.
A 70mm print of Patton is showing at the Aero on Friday or Saturday ?
See if you can go, as if I remember you work/live close by.

I'll look for a link right now.

Did I mention I hate you all for being able to go?

I'll still pick up the Blu, but I look forward to double dipping on an unmolested version

Can anyone stop this DNR studio madness? This appears to threaten many BD movies. It sounds like a harder fight than getting OAR on DVD.

For the life of me, I just don’t understand why any post-processing of this nature would/need be applied to this title during the production of the HD master or even more disturbingly by the Blu-ray compressionist prior to squishing.

That’s why I won’t believe it, until I see it with my own eyes.

I completely agree Penton. There simply isn't that much noise to begin with in this film. However from the screenshots in the review, and RAHs commentary I'm now 100% convinced it was done. Look at the netting on the tents in the shot with rommell, look at the lack of facial detail (since this predates any digital manipulation to hide flaws) where there should be piles from yummy 65mm photography

Penton/Wicky:

First off, forgive me if this has been touched on(tried to keep up with these threads as best as possible), but since Netflix's box is out I wanted to ask something.

Apple Tv, Vudu and now Netflix are offering more and more downloads. Apple Tv and Vudu are getting a better new release HD offering, granted its not BR quality. Netflix stated yesterday(?) that studios wanted to keep most of their HD offering on media for a better profit margin (which makes sense). Is this true?

Some people feel concerned about Apple Tv and Vudu, but after exploring both today and their selections, I dont see how you can have a better deal than a BR player and rental/purchased optical media.

I guess if studios release their hold on HD offerings to download, maybe, but the PQ and HD audio wont be there. I have heard that Vudu has a pretty good PQ for what it is.

Round a bout, what the heck is the point of people paying $300 for a download box with a skimpy offering? Ive seen some even claim they dropped cable for an Apple Tv and I have to wonder if they have ever watched OTA programming in HD. I didnt buy a 1080p plasma to hook a compressed 720p box to it.

But where?
During the restoration phase or the Blu-ray disc production phase?

Screenshots tell me nothing. I have to see the film in motion. Savage (or anyone else) in the L.A./Santa Monica area, you really should try to get to the Aero on Friday.

Assuming that Patton was handled by the wizards over at PHL, I have a hard time believing that any DNR would have been used. From everything I've witnessed from PHL, they simply don't do that kind of thing. They take pride in preserving the natural look of film. Take a look at their remarkable transfer of From Hell for a shining example of grain preservation and a true film-like experience...

This issue will be brought to people at the top of the food chain, and I mean the top.
However, it necessitates a tactful approach and more importantly, excellent credible evidence for side by side viewing of different versions of the same HD title.
As the culpable material will eventually be handed off down the line to the CTOs for their evaluation/recommendations. The thing that we would most like to avoid is to have the compressionists point the finger at the HD mastering people in the telecine bay, and vice versa, without knowing wherein the problem definitively arises.

If you or anyone has credible evidence to offer up, then I suggest you contact either Wicky or Max where there is an actual channel for a successful outcome.

Correct, they have 0 (zero) history of that.

I agree, it was almost certainly done at telecine. It's simply not in Panasonic's MO. I'm going to run down to Borders this weekend and see if I can sweettalk them into "accidentally" selling me one early. They've done it with books before

Penton, have you as a Hollywood insider had the opportunity to have a look at Fincher's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button? I just watched the trailer for the first time and it looks absolutely spectacular...

He's totally wrong definately on that Lawrence. 16 year old transfer? I know the DVD was sourced form a new transfer, not sure if the superbit was retransferred but I know it was re-color timed.

But really, I'll most likely just buy the Blu-ray. I have never seen the film (I know it's sad, but I'm young. My generation's all screwed up when it comes to cinema).

Yes, but as an anonymous hair stylist or cook or whatever I be these days.
People say that it could be Oscar material.

This is from the website of the DP that shot it (on a Viper, as the Director, David Fincher loves the workflow of that system).

But he’s a professional (well respected I might add) in the film restoration business.
