Exactly what I was thinking. The studios don't need to run it by us before doing 4K remasters, nor do they need to be heralded with a new Blu-ray release. If Sony sez it's 4K then I believe them.

It will be interesting to see the first Bluray vs UHD screen shot comparisons.
I'm good if Blurays start releasing along with 4k discs, but will probably not buy titles I already own that look good enough to me as is. Hopefully we won't have to go through the same thing where the first few years the same titles are released and the studio's still refuse to release a lot of their catalog titles. Still a ton of great movies that never made it to Bluray. |

I have a UHD 4K television now. Ho ho ho.
[Show spoiler] Earlier today, when I had the afternoon off, I replaced my 32" LG 1080P television with this LG 49" 2160p 120 Hz UHD 4K TV. This was halfway a spur of the moment thing and halfway something that has been on my mind since I bought my new home two months ago. I initially went to Best Buy this afternoon with the intent of shelling out $350-$400 on a good 49" to 60" 1080P television. I looked at the 1080P sets, then looked at the 4K sets just to see how astronomical the prices were. Some of the smaller ones were in my price range, but the 49" and 55" 4K televisions in that particular Best Buy had support setups that I did not care for, since my television sits on a chest in my living room. I then went to Target, and found the above LG 49" on sale for $699, and, since I've loved my LG 1080P television, it was a quick decision. Unfortunately, that Target store was completely sold out of the set. They did a search for me, and all of the Targets in the area were sold out of the set as well except for one store on the other side of the county. I drove 13 miles to the other Target after reserving the televison, and bought it there. The Target clerk notified me that this television was eligible for a 10% discount, so that helped sweeten the deal. I bought it with the 4-year Target protection plan, took it home, and set it up. I watched a few minutes of Casino Royale, which is still my "demo disc" of choice. I then watched a few minutes of my all-time favorite film, Out of the Past, to check how black-and-white films look on the set. I'm loving the television so far. I only sit about six feet away from this 49" television, so the fact that it is small for a 4K set is of no concern. It actually fills up my living room just like I wanted it to. One strangely spooky thing... I hooked up my Blu-ray player and HDMI to this new television, and went into the menu to see if there was a similar "Calibration Wizard" that my old LG television had. As it turned out, my custom settings from my old LG were already present on the Expert 1 picture setting of this new LG. Not sure how that happened, but the settings are pretty much identical, from what I can remember. |

That was in the back of my mind, but I actually didn't check. I mainly wanted a bigger and better television for my existing Blu-rays. If I need to adjust strategy, then I will do so later when the discs in the new format become available.

Entirely dependent on your screen size and viewing distance. Assuming simple 2x scaling, blu-ray on a 50" 4K TV will look identical to a blu-ray on a 50" 1080p TV (since you're just using a square of 4 pixels to represent 1).

I just got a blu-ray player for Christmas and have about 25-30 movies currently. It'd be more, but I need to buy a region-free player first and then the collection is gonna really take off. So yeah, UHD I'll wait on for a good 5-8 years just like I did with blu's.

• All HDMI ports support the HDCP 2.2. • 4K Source is only supported in HDMI input. • 4K signal and content are not available in the RF/USB input. • All HDMI input ports support 4K @ 50/60 Hz (4:4:4, 4:2:2) for high-definition video. Picture or sound may not be supported depending upon the specifications of the external device connected. In that case, change the settings for HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color. I'll cross the Ultra HD Blu-ray bridge somehow when it gets here. For now, I'm just going to enjoy watching my new Blu-ray of Mad Max: Fury Road on this new television. Many films that have camera negatives are getting rescanned in 4k, so there will be native 4k content. A lot of newer stuff is stuck at 2k unless they completely re-do the master DI's. The only benefits will be 10 bit, better cinema color, better contrast, and maybe true HDR since they don't have 4k detail. And possibly immersive 3D surround sound via Dolby Atmos or DTS: X. |

I will support the software from day one, but I am not sure how much I will upgrade my film library. For example, I own "Kingsman" on Blu-ray but I do not feel compelled to re-purchase it on UHD. But, that may change for other titles that are much more dear to me.
I will wait on the hardware till it drops to a price I am comfortable paying, even if that means I will be waiting a while. I will not buy a UHD player until I can afford an OLED television. Also, when it does come time for me to purchase a UHD player, I will probably wait until I have enough money saved up to also buy a receiver that can handle these two new pieces of technology. |

That Samsung UHD player doesn't even play 3D blu-ray discs. Hilarious. I'm sorry, but for $500 it better do everything my current $150 blu-ray player can do (and that includes 3D). I know there isn't a 4k standard but 4k 3D sets can still handle 1080p 3D content upscaled so that player should be 3D enabled. 2 steps forward, 1 step back.
Also, the worst 2 players I ever owned were both Samsung players. My worst DVD player and worst blu-ray player were both Samsungs. Never again will I buy a Samsung disc player. |
