I haven't delved into any advanced details, but I'm giving this the road test with again with my Mad Max: Fury Road Blu-ray. The first thing that I noticed was that there's a good bit of muscle to the sound and that I can hear dialogue clearly even in the thick of the action scenes. My sound bar volume is only set to 20 (out of 100 max), and it fills up my living room really well.

Any advantages of using an HDMI cable over a digital audio cable? (I'm sort of clueless about this stuff.)

I'll say that going from a 32" 1080P television with internal speakers to a 49" 4K UHD television with a sound bar and subwoofer is really something else. The total cost was a little less than $1,000, and it'll take me two or three months to pay off that VISA bill, but it's quite worth it.

(This is not the right thread for this line of discussion, but I figured that I'd update.)
You would love this film even more if you sprung for a budget receiver and speakers/sub. Sound bars are a last resort in the home theater realm.

In fact, you would die with a smile if you heard Fury Road in full Dolby Atmos.

Nope. I've just got the television and the sound bar hooked up to each other. I read that the digital optical cable that came with the sound bar would work just fine in that instance.

From the sound of the movie right now, all seems to be quite good, so I probably won't tinker with it much more.

Thanks. I'll hold off for now, since I prefer a simple living room design. The sound bar was a righteous decision for $200, and I'm really liking the novelty of it now. I've always been pretty happy to save a true, honest-to-goodness theater sound for experiencing movies at the theater, but I definitely see where you're coming from.

I read the specs on the link you gave and it does seem to come with an HDMI input and output. I think you can hook this up via HDMI. You will need two cables though.

Yes, it does have a HDMI output, but I do need a second cable. I'll go look for an inexpensive one.

Yeah, Fury Road's Atmos track is unreal. Sounds coming from all over... though I didn't like the movie, the immersive audio is killer.

Right up there with the Gravity Diamond Luxe Edition for aggressive 3D mixing.

You might as well! Like I said, you can get them cheap on Amazon. A six foot cable goes for like 5 bucks.

At least regular Bluray movies will still come in a combo pack along with the 4K Blurays.

We’ll be back with more later today, but we wanted to quickly chime in here today with additional word on Ultra HD Blu-ray out of IFA in Berlin. We understand now that Samsung’s newly announced 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player is targeted for release in the 1st Quarter of 2016 (we’re hearing late January or February). We’re also hearing that the player’s price is “going to pleasantly surprise people.” [Read on here…]

More importantly, Fox has informed us that their initial slate of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles (with High Dynamic Range) will include Exodus: Gods and Kings, Fantastic Four, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Life of Pi, The Maze Runner, Wild, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. These will be available when Samsung’s player arrives in stores. Going forward, all new release titles will be released on UHD BD day and date with Blu-ray.

Here’s a look at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment president Mike Dunn (center) making this announcement at IFA yesterday…

Unless the sound bar outputs HD sound I wouldn't bother with HDMI cables unless you want to run the video through as well. The main issue with sound bars is the audio been out-of-sync, so if it's fine with the digital optical cable and all your devices then leave it alone.

The problem with running video through the sound bar is you usually have to faff around with remotes even if you don't want to use its pass-through feature, with the optical cable you can just use it when you want to and use the TVs volume at other times.

Same here. I'll probably upgrade some of the bigger blockbuster films (i.e. Marvel films, Star Wars, etc.) and some absolute favorites.

I have no intention of going "whole hog" in rebuying as many movies in 4K as I have on Blu-Ray in relation to DVD and VHS.

I might make an exception here and there if a film that I wouldn't otherwise upgrade, but previously had a less-than-stellar transfer and then gets a much better transfer (which would warrant a double-dip anyway, even if it was just rebuying it on regular BD again) comes out on the 4K format. If I'm going to buy it again anyway, I may as well get it in 4K.

You wouldn't be able to even if you wanted to as there's only a few hundred films with 4K DIs anyway.

Exactly. Their TVs over the last decade have been fantastic while their BD players make excellent paperweights.

This sounds like good advice. I don't have a sound bar, so I don't know much about them. (My Father has one but it's several years old and it came with it's own tuner. No HDMI.) Still, you can get an el cheapo HDMI cable and experiment. See if you have any out-of-sync issues.

I wonder if it'll include the rouge cut. I don't see why not.

I'd get Kingsman. Maybe life of Pi

My point is simply that even if someway, somehow, every film that I already own in some form were to come out on the format, I would only upgrade a small handful of them.

This also means that whatever films do get a 4K release (since many are likely not to), I will potentially be buying even less in terms of upgrades.

It will be a go-forward medium for me. I just hope any studios that jump on board keep these as 4K/BD combo packs as a standard.

You can get the same quality HDMI cables from Amazon or Monoprice for much, much cheaper. Are you running this through a tuner that that can decode HD or has an HDMI input? If not, then I'm guessing the way you already have it set up is probably you're best bet.

No go on hooking up my sound bar with the HDMI cables, or at least not that I could figure out. I used a high speed ethernet cable, as per the manual instructions, but no volume came from the sound bar when I did. I think that it's because there are no HDMI inputs on the TV that are labeled for the ARC (Audio Return Channel), and that's is what is needed for the sound bar to work through that connection.

No worries, though. The sound bar sounds amazing with the digital optical hookup, and that setup is better than using the internal television speakers. Besides, I like not having to use too many remotes.

I've got other movies that I want to watch tonight, but every time I use Mad Max: Fury Road as a test disc for my audio options, I end up watching the whole movie again!
