BTW, has anybody mentioned yet that though a different actor is playing the younger Bilbo,
[Show spoiler]Jackson changed the way that Bilbo finds the One Ring.

I saw this yesterday during a matinee. Alot of people but not full (I think I'll do matinees from now on) I highly enjoyed this and cannot wait till part 2. As for the 48fps, I never even noticed. I kept telling myself that this is 48fps in my head and trying to spot the differences but is still looked like any standard movie. So I say bring on 48fps to all movies I guess.

Oh yeah, I loved that Star Trek opening.

Yea that was my same reaction to the HFR too.

I spent the whole freaking movie looking for these negatives that I have been hearing so much about. I just couldn't find any.

The ONLY way that I was even able to figure out that I definitely was watching it in HFR, was the fact that the 3D was so gawd damn FANTASTIC.

I have never accepted 3D before this, however I am a firm believer in it now.

Bring on more HFR 3D! (Woooot!)

boxofficemojo.com: ‘the hobbit’ breaks another record with $37.5 million friday

december 15, 2012 at 2:26 pm by newsfrombree -

underscoring what seems to be a significant disconnect between fans and critics, early returns are in for our ringers reviews and ‘the hobbit: Auj’ is showing an average of 4.6/5 rings with fans. The audiences seem to be just as excited based on this report from boxofficemojo.com:

The hobbit: An unexpected journey drew large crowds on friday and set a new december opening day record with an estimated 37.5 million from 4,045 locations.

The previous december record-holder was the lord of the rings: The return of the king, which debuted to $34.5 million on a wednesday in 2003. The hobbit also opened noticeably higher than the two towers ($26.2 million), and grossed twice as much as the fellowship of the ring ($18.2 million). With 3d/imax premiums and a decade of inflation, though, the hobbit‘s initial attendance was substantially lower than that of return of the king and about on par with the two towers.

Yeah I noticed that to. I guess it had to be that way though.
[Show spoiler]In the the lotr prologe it seems like Bilbo found the ring, right at the same time Gollum realized he lost it. So that wouldn't really work at all with the riddles in the dark scene. I just hope they leave the Fellowship prologe alone in future releases. I would rather have the inconsistincy than George lucasing the movie. Besides one of the big plots in Fellowship is how Bilbo hasn't aged at all because of his possesion of the ring. That's never going to really make sense with the new films. So I say just leave it alone

Just got back from seeing it in HFR3D. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. I never even noticed it initially (probably cause I'm accustomed to the TruMotion on my TV) but god, the opening sequence, it was horribly used. It looked so fake and TV like. Rm there on out it looked good. The 3D aspect was well done too.

The film itself seemed to kind of just drudge along. The first hour or so was just blah. I'd give it a 3/5 overall. I can tell the remaining two films will be wayyy better though.

(sigh)

It's not the checks that I am concerned about.

After seeing this last night in regular 2D and having a day to digest it all, I have a few brief comments.

1) It didn't feel like a 3 hour movie. The pacing was just fine except for when they arrived in Rivendell. Even this didn't bother me too much because I was expecting a slow down at some point.

2) Martin Freeman was the perfect choice to play Bilbo. He really made that character into something great.

3) Andy Serkis as Gollum totally owned his scenes. Just amazing how good he was.

4) It's a shame we have to wait a year to see the next part and 19 months to see the end. Although next year i'll be closer to a city where they were showing it in HFR so I might have to see it twice in one day.

5) Cate Blanchett was totally smokin hot as Galadriel.

I agree with everything above. I'm surprised to hear people say how the film often doesn't have enough content to complete it, while I found it never lost my interest. When it was covering nothing, it was showing off the beautiful country of New Zealand in glorious 3D and 48fps with the superior score by Howard Shore booming in the background. Even when the film literally covered nothing, it was still beautiful and interesting.

The technology used to bring Gollum to life has really evolved, and once particular shot impressed the heck out of me the way we saw his emotions coming through. Kinda makes me wanna watch the originals, King Kong and Rise of the Planet of the Apes just to see the tech evolve.

I never fantasize about Cate Blanchett the actress. But I do fantasize about Cate Blanchett as Galadriel a lot.
