Liked:

- The city of Erebor. As a huge fan of Dragon Age, I had fond memories of Orzammar coming back to me.

- Things
[Show spoiler]Bilbo's birthday party planned with Frodo, Galadriel, Saruman, the Witch King
being tied into FOTR as a taste of things to come!

-
[Show spoiler]The "Bilbo Baggins Hates" song!!!
As a fan of the animated movie, I was shocked and happy to see it used again!

- Loved hearing the Dwarves theme song again!

- Riddles In The Dark was my favorite part. (although I don't recall the fish or darkness riddles being used though?)

Disliked:

- The rock giants. While it was a visual wonder, the scene was over the top. Even for a fantasy film.

-Not enough "Down, Down To Goblin Town"

- How Bilbo found The One Ring was changed. They should've just tried to match the prologue scene in FOTR since it was more book accurate.

- I hate
[Show spoiler]seeing The Eagles again! We're not supposed to see them until the 3rd film so Jackson having come to the rescue so soon took away the impact it would've had for The Battle of Five Armies.
Did not like this scene at all.

Also how old was Elijah Wood in the first trilogy? He grew up, or got an injection of testosterone directly to the jaw!
Film began in 1999 so he was around 18 at the time.

I'm not a fan of LOTR and I wasn't expecting to like the Hobbit, but surprisingly, I did.

It really felt like an adventure. 4/5

I think the arrogance about Domestic Box Office as the source of success is foolish. This movie already is a success. There is a thing called international box office, and combined with the domestic the movie has made almost 500 million already. And I suspect a slight increase as famillies spend the upcoming week together and need something to do so they head to movies. (in fact, i know in my family we sometimes check to see if anyone is
interested in a film so we hold off seeing it)

Throw in merchandise sales and the eventualy BRD and BRD EE release and this movie will probably be worth about a billion. Back out production costs and marketing and just on one film one they are probably going to be able to cover the cost of 3.

This film has made over $400 million worldwide so it has already made the budget back for all three films and payed for the cost of the marketing.

‘Les Misérables’ Starts International Run By Beating ‘The Hobbit’ In Japan & Korea.

"Hobbit plummets" "Underwhelming"
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3591&p=.htm

Lord of the Rings books 1137 pages Theatrical editions 558 minutes.
The Hobbit book 320 pages. One 2 1/2 hour movie would have been enough.

After watching the first Hobbit movie, I have a feeling I'm going to be hoping for a truncated edition rather than extended editions. One that edits all three movies down to one with a lot less walking.

Also, no overbearing Fox CGI film this year, so Hobbit and Monsters have the family school-vacation audience all to their greedy lil' selves.
We're about to find out why parents didn't WANT to go to a movie (ie. drag the kids and park at the mall) for the last two weeks, and promised they were "saving" it.

ok i'm confused, it's been over a decade since I read the book, but The Hobbit is one of my all time favorites. I thought the
[Show spoiler]eagles DID save them from the trees? I thought the part of them coming off the trees to fight was made up for the movie.
if I am mistaken then what happened in the books?

I think he meant he wished they didn't in the movie...You are correct on the book.

Yes, but to the detriment of the story, which was written around 20 years before the Lord of the Rings was finally published. The Hobbit was an award winning children's fantasy in 1937. It was designed to be read to children, yet it had a broad appeal to a much wider age group. Why mess with success?

Tolkien began a new version in 1960, attempting to adjust the tone of The Hobbit to its sequel [Lord of the Rings]He abandoned the new revision at chapter three after he received criticism that it "just wasn't The Hobbit", implying it had lost much of its light-hearted tone and quick pace.

One could say that Tolkien refrained from "lucasizing" the Hobbit. Perhaps Peter Jackson should have done the same.

I wonder if the Hobbit Story will end with the second movie, and the third movie will be comprised of entirely The Lost Chapters and Apendixes. Does anyone know? They filmed all 3 at once, yes?

But Tolkien wrote the appendicies to tie The Hobbit to the Lord of the Rings.

They contain story that is happening @ the same time as the events that are taking place during The Hobbit.

So i fail to see where I'm wrong since it's all happening @ the same time.
