Arrow Amazon's Utopia (US Remake - written by Gillian Flynn)

Quote:
A US remake of Dennis Kelly's Utopia is on its way, with director David Fincher and Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn at the helm...

Utopia, currently in production on series two, will return to Channel 4 later this year. Wait a little longer, and like Broadchurch before it, the series will also have a US twin. It's been that announced Fight Club and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's David Fincher will be continuing his collaboration with Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn to produce a remake for HBO.

If Channel 4's Utopia was going to end up anywhere on US TV, then HBO is the place. Depending on how faithful a remake the Fincher/Flynn version of the 2013 series will be, there are a handful of scenes that the networks might find very difficult to swallow.

The premise of the series, which follows a group of conspiracy theorists brought together by a catastrophe-prophecying graphic novel, is no easy swallow either. As the six-part drama progressed on Channel 4, it posed complex moral questions about utilitarianism and overpopulation, offering no simple answers.

Utopia's idiosyncratic style, from director Marc Munden, was a key part of the first series' identity. Will David Fincher's direction achieve the same arresting effect? More news as it arrives.

A bit uneven on this news, love Fincher but the original series is so fantastic and note worthy for it's style alone (which is rather polar opposite from Fincher's)

Here's hoping for the best though, the subject material is right up his alley, and the material could go in various different directions.

And of course I recommended the UK show immensely, it's terrific.

I like Fincher, and I like Utopia. What I hate is the U.S. remaking all the great British shows. There's no way that Fincher could make Utopia better. I thought better of HBO than to just remake stuff from other countries.

How does this get funding but great shows like Deadwood, Carnivale, and Rome aren't even given proper endings?

I would've said the same thing. The original UK series was incredible...dystopian, conspiracy filled, timely nightmare of a series. Ate it up with a spoon. It was pretty much perfect...except the last two episodes were disappointing, disjointed and felt like it was repeating itself.

However, it was canceled and cut short. This makes me feel like a HBO version could be interesting and warranted...I'd like to see how they continue the series if they make it past 2 seasons. I kind of wish Dennis Kelly was involved, but Flynn being involved def has my interest.

I'm down to see how this goes.

David Fincher HBO Pilot ‘Utopia’ In Jeopardy Over Budget Issues

Quote:
Prospects appear grim for Utopia, HBO’s drama pilot from David Fincher, an adaptation of the Channel 4 series created by Dennis Kelly. The issue I hear is budgetary, as the director and the pay cable network are yet to agree on a budget for the high-profile, big-scope project. The pilot already has cast a number of actors, including Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara, though all deals are contingent on a budget agreement, which has not been reached yet and chances are getting slimmer. I hear HBO executives want very much to be in the David Fincher business and are hoping for a hail mary pass but odds appear slim at this point.

I hear the plan had been for Fincher to prep Utopia before resuming work on his other HBO project, 1980s comedy VideoSynchronicity, whose production was halted for additional script work. Fincher is a very hands-on filmmaker, so no writing can be done without his involvement. If Utopia doesn’t go forward, Fincher may focus his attention on VideoSynchronicity .

Utopia revolves around the die-hard fans of an iconic, underground graphic novel who are suddenly launched into their own pop-culture thriller when they learn that the author has secretly written a sequel.

HBO plans to restart the project with another director:

Quote:
HBO still hopes Fincher will return to Videosyncrasy and plans to make Utopia with another director. Meanwhile, Fincher has returned to his House of Cards home, Netflix, to develop a new drama.

'Utopia' Remake Ordered to Series as Amazon Inks Showrunner Gillian Flynn to Overall Deal

Quote:
Four years after being ordered straight to series and hitting a speed bump at HBO, Utopia has found a new home.

Amazon Studios has handed out a nine-episode, straight-to-series order for Gillian Flynn's reboot of Utopia. Additionally, Amazon has inked the Gone Girl and Sharp Objects author to an overall deal with Utopia set as the first project under the pact.

Based on Dennis Kelly's British series of the same name, the drama revolves around a group of young adults who meet online and are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organization. After they come in to possession of a near mythical cult underground graphic novel, they discover the conspiracy theories in the comic's pages may actually be real and are forced in to the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.

If Fincher is involved it’ll be as a producer, apparently most of his attention is now diverted to Mindhunter, all his feature film work has been pushed back to 2019.

Default Utopia remains...

...one of my favorite (top three, in fact) television shows of all time... along with "Twin Peaks" and McGoohan's "The Prisoner", so I couldn't be more elated by this news.

Of course I'll admit that I'm a bit nervous with regard to the whole 'reboot' aspect of the project, but the truth is that with the right team behind it, this could be phenomenal. After all, I was fortunate enough to have been afforded the amazing opportunity to enjoy a fairly recent return journey to Twin Peaks (which I thought was brilliant), so I can not help but to be extremely delighted by this fantastic news...

POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW......POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW.......

I just wish this series would A.) involve Dennis Kelly in a writing or even show runner capacity...... And B.) Take place alongside the original (kind of like, showing us what was going on in the U.S. and in other global locations before, during and after the events depicted in the U.K., thereby allowing for the appearance of some of the characters from the original series. I say this for several reasons, not the least of which is because... if they are going to do a straight reboot/remake, then I would hope that they would be brave enough to depict the full opening seen to the original's third (I believe it was series 1, episode 3, if memory serves), episode. Although, in this atmosphere I truly doubt most anyone would be brave enough to do so. I, myself, thought it was a crucial scene, not due to it's implied violence, but because it truly established so much about R.B.'s character/inner turmoil and contributed heavily to his character arc.

Either way though.... more "Utopia" is something that I have been dreaming of and longing for....

‘Utopia’: John Cusack To Star In Amazon Series

John Cusack is set to star opposite Sasha Lane and Rainn Wilson in Utopia, Amazon’s straight-to-series adaptation of the British drama, written by Gone Girl author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn.

Utopia follows a group of young adults who meet online that are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organization after they come into possession of a near-mythical cult underground graphic novel. Within the comic’s pages, they discover the conspiracy theories that may actually be real and are forced into the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.

Cusack will play Dr. Kevin Christie. Charismatic and media-savvy, with a brilliant biotech mind and a philanthropic outlook.

Looks like Amazon are going to unveil this with their Comic-Con stream this year. I’m quite eager to see how it looks, the original version was mind-bogglingly stylish and it’s a real shame it never saw a conclusion, so I hope this US remake can at least be worthwhile.

I mean, it probably won't be... but we can just hope it's good enough to watch, because most remakes aren't lol It being on Amazon does mean it's more likely to be ok, just maybe not as good, since they won't have to edit it too heavily like how Freeform is still apparently trying to adapt Misfits
