What can we expect to see at CES 2018

Historically CES's main category has been the launch of the next generation of TVs and video display technology. This year we'll see a lot of new company start-up launches, IoT product advancements and Smart home control systems and integration. However, CES will continue its well respected main focus of the advancement of TV and video display technology.

In advance of CES 2018 I thought it would be fun and interesting to discuss what we can we expect from the three premium manufacturers. Here's my thoughts and wishes for the 2018 TV line-up.

LG OLED wish list:

• W8 series with just a connection box with no audio. ATSC 3.0 and Smart apps would be nice.
• C8 series in larger screen sizes, like 77"
• Some if not all of the HDMI 2.1 features and hopefully the full 48Gbps
• More coverage of the rec.2020 color gamut
• Higher peak luminance

Sony LCD/LED and OLED wish list:

• A1F in 55", 65" and 77" without the easel stand
• Successor to the Z9D, likely named Z9F
• Larger screen sizes for all of the XBR premium LCD/LED series, like 85" and up
• Ditto on many of the items listed above for LG

Samsung QLED wish list:

• Full array local dimming on the "Q" series

For all bleeding edge display technologies, e.g. OLED, QLED and the best FALD LED displays I'd like to see the SRP launch prices to continue to move lower for the 2018 model year.

CES has always been very exciting for me as it's when we get to see all of the new TVs that will be evaluated and compared butt-to-butt at my TV Shootout event.

What's your thoughts for the 2018 TV market and my comments?

I really want LG to give us 3D backwards compatibility on one of their OLEDs.

A true 12-but capable one as well. Probably out of my price range but once it’s introduced others will follow.

I'm mainly interested in what Sony will come up with.

Some people seem to think the Z9D will be the last truly high end LCD TV from Sony, and they will focus more on high end OLEDs.

At this point I'm still thinking of getting the 75" Z9D model myself, but maybe I ought to wait until CES and see what Sony will bring for 2018. But on the other hand, I guess it's fair to say none of the 2018 (Sony) TVs will have 3D, which automatically means I will definitely not be getting a 2018 model TV.

Either way I'm looking forward to CES 2018.

And I also hope every manufacturer has been listening to the 3D crowd even though they're a minority...

I'd also love to see OLED passive 3D come back and have strongly suggested to my friends at LG and Sony to add 3D capability to the high end models.

I also want 12-bit panels!!!

IMHO this show will likely mostly be about

• smart homes and appliances
• latest phones (yawn! guys this is a boring industry now)
• smarter cars,
• VR and 8K games.
• Some incremental improvements with 4K displays, some 8K display products in 2018 but nothing exciting until 2019 because HDMI 2.1 was so late.

I love to see a huge shift on what is more important with TV and video industry pushing latest tech or making it work better! The industry did not do well with promised updates or keeping products well supported in 2017.

Yeah, with the 100" ZD9 apparently staying in production over this next product cycle into 2018 then it doesn't augur well for a ZF9. They could yet do a 65" and a 75" of the ZF, sure, but for their high-end sets I think Sony will ultimately be better served refining their implementation of OLED from here on out.

With the ZD's getting Dolby Vision anyway in January (apparently) then that almost makes them a 'new' product for the third year running anyway, and there's still nothing else in terms of competition that can touch these sets for peak brightness. Other manufacturers' LCD offerings will no doubt improve as we go into 2018 but these 2016 ZD's will still hold their own methinks. If we do get a ZF then that'll shirley be the last of the top-dog LCDs from Sony.

How about tv's without voice control & no wi-fi & no spy devices? - the stuff multiple tv makers claimed did not exist on tv's and got sued when they were proven to be liars and fact even if you turn that crap off - it CAN and IS illegally remotely turned back om against the end-users will

I know all the data miners and peoople and retailers and etc who get the kickbacks from the money flow, would just have to find another way to make money off spying

Increased peak brightness and a return of passive 3D for OLED in particular (I've had experience with active 3D on LCD as well, while nice, passive 3D on the OLED kills it in every way). A Sony OLED with passive 3D and a 1000+ nit peak output would be very difficult for me to resist.

Guys, what are your predictions about the price for a 65' 4K Sony Oled ? Taking into account the launching price of the 65' 2017 model was $6,500.

"CES is always packed with TVs of every imaginable shape and size, so it's an event to watch if you're in the market for a new unit - 4K will definitely play a big part and we might even see some ultra-expensive 8K televisions make an appearance.

Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and LG will all be in attendance, plus plenty of other set manufacturers, and you can expect plenty of buzz around the hottest tech upgrades of the day. In this case that's likely to include High Dynamic Range (HDR).

At this point we haven't been given much in the way of specifics about what's going to be shown off at CES 2018, but we're likely to see a plethora of TVs that will make their way to store shelves during the course of 2018."

My wish list does in fact, come from my lobbying for the advancements and enhancements in our next video displays. My suggestions go directly to the video leaders and upper echelon of each of our beloved TV manufacturers. I do hope in some of the listed items expect to see some of this progress.

Reminds me, after declining an invite to hang out with some lower echelon folks in consumer electronics down in Rancho Bernardo, Top dog (senior V.P.) once asked me – “Do you limit yourself to riding only with Vice Presidents (@ Sony)”

Hoping to see Samsung not only return to FALD, but also switch to quantum dot color filters. The new color filters would not only increase the color gamut, but saturation and viewing angles would be drastically improved as well as black levels too. And I believe if this happens their full array tv will win the 2018 shootout
