The 2016 LG OLED 4K/3D TV models must have a lower brightness level than the 2017 and 2018 models.

HDR 2D is in, HDR 3D is out.

No problem, I've read the contrary.

Then if it's true they must have removed the 3D feature for a good (financial or performance?) reason.

The Sony Z9D 4K UHD HDR LED series don't have a problem with 3D, active.

Panasonic reveals two 4K HDR OLED TV ranges ahead of CES 2018 - What hi*Fi!

Quote:
Yes, more OLEDs (and three 4K Blu-ray players) are on the 2018 spread.

The Z950 (TX-55FZ950 and TX-65FZ950) and FZ800 (TX-55FZ800 and TX-65FZ800) models feature new OLED panels (which will no doubt feature on rival 2018 OLED models), as well the latest generation of Panasonic’s proprietary HCX processor.

The biggest change brought by the HCX processor is the introduction of ‘Dynamic LUT’ (or ‘Dynamic Look-up Table’). A LUT, which is essentially a table of nuumbers that takes an image and corrects it (whether that be in terms of saturation, brightness and contrast - or all three), is typically fixed and applied to the content source once.

Making that process dynamic, however, means the picture is analysed every millisecond to select most optimal LUT on a scene-by-scene basis depending on its brightness. Why? To bring picture improvements - especially to mid-brightness scenes. As HDR with dynamic metadata (i.e. Dolby Vision and HDR10+) is now a ’thing’, Panasonic believes this has become necessary.

Panasonic expressed its pride (several times, actually) at its EZ1000 TV being the reference consumer monitor for post-production firms Technicolor and Deluxe, and, after a request from the industry, has increased calibration steps at the lowest (i.e. darkest) end of the colour gamut. That means the four new OLED models support calibration at 5 per cent and – in an industry first – 2.5 per cent luminance within Panasonic’s Colour Management System settings, allowing users extra tweaking of luminance levels in low-lit scenes.

The Panasonic FZ950 and FZ800 models will also be the first OLED screens available in 2018 to support HDR10+, which the HDR10+ Alliance has just announced a logo and further certification for. That means owners will be able to watch Amazon Prime Video’s HDR catalogue in the format, as well as future content from 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros.

Frustratingly but not all that surprising, Dolby Vision HDR (a direct rival to HDR10+ dynamic metadata) has been left off the spec sheet - despite appearing on the one for Panasonic’s flagship 2018 Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

Panasonic has also introduced a Dynamic Scene Optimizer function, which is designed to mimic dynamic metadata when playing straight-up HDR10 content. Last but not least on the picture side, an Auto HDR Brightness Enhancer function allows users to adjust (manually or automatically) how HDR content looks in a brighter room.

The TX-77EZ1000 – launched at IFA last September – will also continue this year.
Panasonic’s flagship 2018 4K Blu-ray player supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Alexa - What Hi*Fi!

Quote:
When it comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray players, Panasonic appears to be upping its line-up count every year. Hot on the heels of the debut DMP-UB900 player in 2016 were the UB300 and UB400 in 2017, and now four new models are on the way this year.

But as the saying goes, it's quality not quantity - and Panasonic has made developments over previous models in the hope to score highly on both.

Like Panasonic’s 2018 OLED TV line-up, all four Ultra HD Premium-certified players feature the company’s second-generation HCX Processor.

The DP-UB820 and DP-UB420 also add support for HDR10+, with the latter also supporting Dolby Vision HDR (the direct rival to HDR10+) - despite Panasonic's OLED TVs continue to emit the format. The flagship is also the only player in the line-up to supports 7.1 channel audio

The DP-UB820 and DP-UB420 feature HDR Optimizer technology, which performs tone mapping on HDR TVs to ensure optimal HDR performance – mostly for the benefit of owners of more affordable HDR TVs that don’t have the processing of top-tier models.

All the 2018 players feature Full HD to 4K upscaling, a HDR adjustment for various brightness conditions, and Dynamic Range Conversion, which aims to improve the contrast of SDR (standard dynamic range) TVs.

While pricing hasn't yet been confirmed, the new 2018 Panasonic players will likely hit shelves in spring.
Its interesting that Panasonic DP-UB820 is going to support DV, even though specs for the 2018 Panasonic OLED models have that missing. Shows even Panasonic is hedging its bets.

Who is writing or editing these Panasonic press releases?? There are spelling & word usage errors that drove me crazy. I mean, c'mon! Put your best foot (feet) forward folks.

Edit: Oh, maybe it was the What Hi*Fi? writer's problem, not Panny's.

And what's with the LUT in some TV's? Why not go DV and merge your LUT into DV's golden reference file for that display?
(I think someone gave the answer weeks ago. Then they lose control of the TV's final output, and they don't want to give in to Dolby).

END EDIT:

Hearing some good rumors about Samsung and micro-led. The 150" micro led were gonna see at CES may actually be sold this year at some point in very low quantities.

3D is deliberately being made to die down by manufacturers whilst their R&D teams work on that mooted glasses free 3D tech we heard about years ago for a debut in a few years time as a new "Fad" for marketing when they start prepping for 8K and need a few years to placate consumers to get that tech ready and in the pipeline.

The idea of glasses free 4K or 8K 3D or heck, VR is what sounds really cool but the level of cost to bring that to market probably anytime sooner than 2025-2030 would be really high. So I'm expecting in the meantime OLED to become more mainstream but it isn't the killer TV tech I thought.

If we could get a TV that's "perfect" in potential such as what OLED does with black level combined with perfect motion resolution at all frame rates, that can then reach the absolute pinnacle of HDR mastered content to 100% colour accuracy and gradation. Then we've got the holy grail of TV tech. Although I wonder if manufacturers might deliberately gimp the tech and piecemeal improvements over many years just to keep selling TVs.

^^ I still have high hopes for glassess free 3D. I agree with you on what you said about 3D being "killed off" deliberately now, in order to present it as "the next big thing" when 8K hits. Matter of fact, it might be even 8K's biggest selling point like HDR/WCG is right now for 4K.

In the meantime I will be holding on to my 3D sets for dear life. I'm still hoping for a 75Z9F to be announced tomorrow but even if that would happen, it will probably not have 3D....

IMO 3D is dead when there are no more theatrical 3D releases and/or 3D Blu-rays to be found anywhere. And that doesn't seem to be the case this year.

Amazon Alexa vs. Google Assistant emerges as key battle of CES 2018 - Geekwire

In a not some distance future you have mirrors that have built in OLED displays with digital assistants that you can talk to.

The more places we put devices that can listen to you, the more opportunities we give hackers (or the government) the ability to listen in to what you are doing and steal information.

Apart from that, these types of "services" are the last things I want in a TV.

I truly wish they would leave all this so called smart, non TV related nonsense far away or at least optional.

Somehow in the NY Post picture he reminds me of Alfred E. Neuman but the reason of him backing out was because of all the death threats he received after his pushing through the very unpopular repeal of Net Neutrality.
