AVforums - Panasonic have launched their new FZ952 and FZ802 OLED TVs for the UK market in 2018 with improved image accuracy, Technics-tuned audio and HDR10+ support, but no Dolby Vision. We interview Rob Taylor to get all the details on these new OLED TVs, the first to feature the new dynamic metadata HDR10 Plus. As noted Panasonic doesn't sell TVs in the USA

Samsung is bringing the hammer for 2018. And bringing an even bigger hammer towards the end of 2018.

^ Yes "The Wall" display they are showing is huge, only 146" in size!

Quote:
The next stage: Micro LED
Samsung isn’t done. Towards the end of 2018 (or early 2019) the company will be the first to commercially bring Micro LED to market.

This is where Samsung finally drops LCD and adopts an emissive technology, similar to OLED and plasma before it. Samsung says it will be less power-hungry than OLED, with less potential for degradation over time. This is about as close to the ‘true’ QLED that folks on the internet have been speculating about for years, before Samsung decided to use ‘QLED’ to brand its Quantum Dot LCD TVs.

Micro LED stems from Samsung’s existing LED Cinema technology, which uses modular LED panels pieced together to create a gigantic picture. The theory here is the same: at CES 2018 Samsung is showing off a 146-inch modular version that it calls ‘The Wall’. It’s not been announced how the modular system works, or what sizes will be available, but it’s safe to say Samsung is starting big before working down to sensible (affordable) sizes.

Default What is a 3D LUT

Quote:
Enter the Cube LUT

On the 2018 OLED models and high-end SK LCD models from LG, they are introducing a cube LUT that calibration software will be able to directly address. With 33x33x33 or 17x17x17 cube LUTs, instead of adjusting 8 points, you will now be able to directly control and address 35,937 or 4,913 individual points. This means that the TV, instead of having to do all its color calculations from 8 reference points, it has thousands to use. By calibrating these points, we now have thousands of reference points instead of a handful, enabling the display to do less math and increasing the accuracy of results when it does calculate colors.

HDR

These new LG TVs are also the first to let you calibrate HDR10 and HLG in gamma space now, something proposed by Tyler Pruitt of Portrait Displays at the recent SMPTE conference. Calibrating HDR has always been a challenge since a TV can respond differently to test patterns than to content, but now this is a solution to that issue. This gamma space calibration method was developed by LG, Dolby, and CalMAN for calibration of LG’s 2017 OLED models Dolby Vision mode, and a similar process has now been implemented for HDR10 and HLG.

Dolby Vision calibration also gets an update – In 2017, a user configuration file generated by CalMan needed to be loaded into the TV via USB; this is now sent to the TV over the same IP interface as the calibration commands, making the process far more seamless.

All HDR picture modes offer automated grayscale and color calibration, and CalMAN recommends that for best HDR calibration accuracy, you only want to take measurements for 5 seconds at a time, and then let the panel rest for 5 seconds to avoid heat build-up at high luminance affecting results.

Qled isn't even mc hammers parachute pants..... that new micro led holds promise, but from the sounds of it its a proof of concept at this point. And many years away from release in any sort of mass production

Calibrating in gamma does make sense given how the processing in most HDR TVs still has to go through a gamma function (according to Stacey Spears).

Samsung is not to be trusted until field tested, that's a fact jack.

Those LG calibration claims are WOW, and exciting. Now how about a 77" around $6-7k...

Robert needs to get us more intel on the Panny 820 and maybe higher model (920?)

I know, but still it's unreal that we have: HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG, so it would actually be the fifth standard.. What are they thinking?

Assuming you skipped the article.

Samsung has their new full array sat right next to a 2017 oled and the Z9D. Guess which lcd has the least blooming according to those in attendance.

LOL, its OK, we know you love Samsung. Believe it once someone reviews it properly in an HT environment.

But HDR10+ and DV on disc will both resolve a static HDR10 version while HLG and Technicolour are duking it out for broadcast supremacy owing to their extremely SDR-friendly propositions. People can call it a "war" if they want but it's all rather friendly as far as the base standard goes, it's the premium options where the skirmish is taking place but 'twas ever thus. If Dolby and DTS can co-exist in an AVR without the world ending then the same will be true for HDR in time. It's all in motion now for sure but we're barely two years in, what did people expect? A fully formed standard laid out on a plate? If you've been in this game as long as I have then you'll know that that's pie in the sky stuff.

Well in his defense the current QLEDs fell well short of some aspects shown off and touted at last years CES. Brightness and viewing angles come to mind.

Believe me, when the geek squad broke the screen on my KS8000 and were willing to cover the price for the Q7, I could not believe the negative reviews it got and that it was not even considered as good in many aspects. It’s how I ended up with X930E.

Good to see Samsung hopefully get back on track.

The 1st company to show an emissive LED display was Sony at the 2012 CES convention. It was a prototype and no model or price was ever announced. However.....

At the 2017 CEDIA show Sony showed the emissive LED successor, called CLEDIS and it's also designed as small panels that can be installed like a video wall so you can build it to whatever size the consumer likes. At CEDIA Sony showed a complete huge video wall made up of all self illuminating LED panels installed butt-to-butt. Sony's CLEDIS emissive LED modules are available to buy today.

Here's a photo from Sony's 2017 CEDIA exhibit showcasing CLEDIS:
