Alright, non-HDR OLED owner here. I have finally generated a 3D LUT for madVR so it can better simulate what HDR would actually look like if my hardware supported it.
Compared to the BD versions, I have found that the colors pop more, and the contrast seems to be noticeably better, too. So, uh, why isn't the BD version able to provide that quality to begin with? |

Well, SDR uses Rec.709 and the displays are 8-bit.
HDR is using Rec.2020 colorspace and 10-bit displays can exhibit so many more color and brightness gradations (even grayscale gradations). So with 4 times as many pixels on that true 4K screen, it’s not just resolution, it’s HDR and true expanded colorspace. |

It was interesting to see that the tests revealed a new type of effect, which may be called ‘dynamic burn-in’. It turned out that some monitors still show parts of (repetitive) moving images long after the signal has been removed. As with static burn-in, cleaning signals may be used to remove the effect, but they may be very screen-specific. Another lesson from the tests relates to the test signals, some of which will need to be updated. To take one example, display panels age over time and with use; to protect screens from aging prematurely, vendors may choose to limit the light level under certain conditions. These dimming approaches can interfere with some of the test signals that have been used up to now. |

For Maniac (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5580146/) the filmmakers used LiveGrain and a film weave sampled from an actual 35mm film print and applied with VFX to produce an old school filmic look to the digital cinematography. Agent Kay, Geoff… others who might watch it let us know what you think of the final HDR product on Netflix.

ray0414, Before the inevitable brand fanboyism kicks in after the announcement of the final results, I checked out AVS to see if they’d re-opened the 2018 Value Electronics shootout thread. Hadn’t been back to that forum in quite some time.

^ thee above is not meant to promote Philips TVs (which I know next to 0 about), but rather another Venice/Sigma use case.

Not sure, Scott has been very quiet all year. He's only written a couple articles all year, and I don't ever see home theater geeks podcasts anymore. |

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/68-di...l#post56777842 As far as the remaining editor who’s still there, when hyping 8K spatial resolution so much, he should learn a little about temporal resolution - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...l#post15488741 (and previous posts in that thread) . Although I guess owls do move when they turn their heads or blink. |

Reminds me a little of what Cameron did to create his 3D rigs for Avatar, they didn't just put a couple of F950 cameras into the housings but they used the processors of the cameras in conjunction with a more compact optical block to create a smaller rig.
