EDIT: So the $65 charge is still pending but there’s now a $20 pending credit from WalMart. Last edited by ProfondoRosso; 03-07-2020 at 04:14 AM. |

My Val Lewton DVDs still play fine, but I agree it is a shame these weren't released as a Blu-ray box set from the beginning, either by Criterion, Scream Factory or Warner Archive.

I would imagine blus of the remaining Val Lewtons are inevitable, even if it's just eventually thru WAC.

![]() ![]() A rural California earthquake frees a mutant species of subterranean cockroaches that have the ability to start fires by rubbing their legs and antennae together. When these incendiary pests kill his wife, an entomologist, played by Bradford Dillman (Piranha), devolves into a reclusive existence as he studies the creatures in order to mate them with their conventional above-ground counterparts. Mayhem ensues in the form of flesh-eating insects, grisly deaths, and even an Old Testament apocalyptic conclusion. The 1975 horror outing, Bug, is best known as a late career production from William Castle, a B movie extraordinaire responsible for gems like House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler. Castle also co-wrote the screenplay with author Thomas Page, whose 1973 novel, The Hephaestus Plague, provides the basis for the narrative. Thanks to some efficient filmmaking choices from director Jeannot Szwarc (Jaws 2, Supergirl), this creepy crawler tale belies its low budget with several effectively unnerving sequences, including an early earthquake scene in a church and a mid-film death by burning. Constant closeups of the armor-plated roach villains complete the effect. This movie is leisurely-paced at times, and even threatens to overstay its welcome during the late indoor scenes where Dillman's scientist studies the enemy, but fiery attacks from the bugs are frequent enough to keep things interesting. A kitchen where one pivotal killing takes place will be recognizable to astute pop culture enthusiasts, because it uses the same indoor set from The Brady Bunch television series, which had been canceled a few months before. I will not go so far as to say that Bug is a top-tier example of 1970s eco-horror, but, as a fun and engaging Saturday afternoon movie, it gets the job done. This Scream Factory Blu-ray, like the cockroaches of the main feature, is a sturdy and indestructible effort with a nicely filmic presentation. The audio shines during a few eerie sound effect moments. A commentary track from Troy Howarth, who is best known for his giallo historian work, gives a thorough background talk about this film's place in eco-horror and when-animals-attack cinema. |

None of my local stores show it in stock, just the option to ship, or ship to store for pick-up in 10ish days. |

I think the thing that often gets overlooked by the consumers when label insiders start talking "poor sales" / "strong sales" is that not all titles are going to have the same sales benchmarks. I don't know that Warner Brothers has any pre-existing HD masters for the other Lewton films, and it seems like their deal with Shout! Factory requires Shout! Factory to partially / fully fund new digital restorations. The production budgets for these releases were probably substantial, given that these are 75 year old films. I'd venture a guess that they've been spending more money on the Lewton films, per title, than they have on most / all of the 30's / 40's Universal Horror films.

I’d wager a ship-to order won’t work but an in store pickup where it shows out of stock MIGHT. It could be worth a shot, but also don’t be too upset if you get stuck paying the extra $20. I’ve heard of some people doing return/rebuy on other items when a local store doesn’t carry a specific item. But the process seems like a lot of work.

While NO stores within 250 miles of me showed it in stock, one of them listed for the "ship to store pickup" options did specifically list the 39.96 price next to the location name, but not any of the others? Sadly that store is still a decent drive/huge hassel so...trying my luck at the closest one. If need be, guess I can also always try customer service with a photo of it on the shelf for that price and a screen shot of the pick up locations that list it for that? We'll see... |
