What ruined it for me was Ronny Yu giving Kane Hodder the shaft for the role of Jason. Kane had been lobbying for years to get that movie made and was a fan favorite at the time. I'll never forgive the recasting of Jason on FvJ.

Yeah, that always struck me as odd. Seemed like everyone wanted Kane Hodder for the role. Everyone except Ronny Yu and some producers I guess.

I was deeply disappointed when I left the theater after watching FvJ. I’m not sure what I expected, but it wasn’t the movie I got. I find the conversation of whether it’s more a “Jason” or a “Freddy” movie interesting, because it should have felt like it belonged to them both equally. It’s essentially a NOES narrative (stylistically it leans more towards an Elm Street film as well). But as others have mentioned, the threat posed by Freddy is diluted to make way for Jason to shine as he hacks through a bunch of teenagers. To me, it feels like Jason got dropped into a Freddy movie and no one was sure how to balance the two properly. So Freddy becomes the puppet master and Jason the puppet. Removing allegiance from both characters turns the film into a series of set pieces with no real drive. The setup is perfectly acceptable, but the execution falters. It’s been years since I’ve seen it, so maybe time will allow me to appreciate it for just what it is.

Funny enough, I actually saw Freddy vs. Jason in the theater, before I'd even really seen most of the other movies. I think previously I'd only seen Jason Takes Manhattan (several years earlier on TV), A Nightmare on Elm Street and New Nightmare. I wish I'd been more familiar with both series beforehand, but I just knew that had been in development Hell for years and thought it was exciting that it had finally gotten made and wanted to see it on the big screen. I enjoyed it a lot and it spurred me to finally check out the rest of the movies, which I came to enjoy as well.

It was such a shitty move to recast Jason since Kane Hodder had been the one to keep the whole FvJ film alive at conventions for a solid 10 years!! Didn't the producers try and claim it was a height issue or something...

Technically they didn't recast Jason. Ken has played Jason before in Jason Takes Manhattan it wasn't all Kane Hodder

I’m probably going to pass myself. I like F13 well enough but I’m content with just owning 1-8. I feel like I would paying for window dressing if its the same scans. If they had the them films uncut or UHD, then I’d bite for sure.

Sweet...I'll get the Pumpkinhead steelbook. Been complacent adding that movie to my collection. Not really wanting a steelbook per se, but a new 4k scan has me hooked.

From what I heard too was that he (Yu) hadn't seen a single F13th movie before then either. Like... who the F hires a director that's not a fan or seen a single F13th (maybe even NOES) movie, let they think thats acceptable for something that should of been a bit more epic? Couldn't these companies find competent directors, writers, etc that are rabid fans of the films and can do them justice from a hardcore fan prospective, instead of just hiring some clowns doing just to make a quick buck? Definitely was always a dream for me, and I'd definitely do it justice because I know what makes F13th work, even down to how the kills play out. Plus, I'd definitely bring back Kane (if he wanted to) and give him massive amounts of creative freedom with the Jason character.
