SLEEPAWAY CAMP is a 10/10 certified classic 80's slasher for me. I acknowledge its "ickiness" although for me it seems tame compared to many other examples from its time period. The cook/child predator plot point is icky but talk about a character getting what he deserves. That boiling pot scene is crazy. Also love the crazy Aunt. So many hilarious jokes throughout. HEY ANGELA WHY U SO F'ED UP? And what about the wardrobe? Iconic. The opening shot with the title...that score...bliss.

I adore the sequels too, even though they are a different vibe. I'd rate them both 9.5/10.

I'm with you. When I watched the film for the first time back in the early 2000's I found it rather dull up until the ending. That ending, which completely caught me off guard, totally redeemed the movie for me and made it something I felt I needed to revist in the future. Jump to something like 10 years later and the release of Scream Factory's Blu Ray and my opinion significantly improved over that initial watch, The entire cook subplot is actually what elevated the film to me. I didn't pick up on it as much during that initial viewing but found that aspect to be something entirely unique and well worth elevating the film as a result. It's a taboo topic for sure but something that has really helped to set apart the film from other slashers. That alone however isn't the worst of it as far as I am concerned. The "in the shadows" curling iron scene is something else entirely which rivals in the worst (best?) that the Terrifier series has to offer. Had it been shown instead of implied, it'd hand's down be in the top 10 most disturbing kill scenes in all of horror history.

I enjoy the 2 follow-up sequels for sure, but they took the serious tone that made the original stand apart, and instead went for the all too predictable more comical tone which so many films did at that time and on one hand made the films far more fun, light hearted and easier to revisit, but also takes out the true "punch" that all great "horror" films need in order to be truly great horror efforts. I enjoy all 3 films for what they are, but in no way should the original be downplayed and the two sequels propped up. Without the original and it's take no prisoners approach, the 2 sequels wouldn't exist.

I'm not shocked it wasn't a big seller for Scream Factory.

I do think Part 2 is a big improvement, though, still, not exactly great. I like Pamela Springtseen much more as Angela, to be sure.
How is it terrible compared to the many slashers VS puts out?

I would buy any and all of these Sleepaway Camp and Jeepers Creepers releases based on that alone.

If "movements" were the deciding factor in what is or is not available to us, we would be SOL for a ton of releases.

i own them bc i enjoy them. saying you’d do it to spite a movement is wild. i don’t agree with what the director did by any means, i can see why some companies could avoid his films due to that. but i personally separate the art from the artist in any case (some people can’t or don’t which is understandable too) it’s all about how you view things and opinions, can’t really blame someone either way from my perspective

i do agree that there’s TONS of films that don’t get the love they deserve bc of an actor/actress/director or so on, but i don’t think you can blame any company or person that’s wanting to keep their distance. especially in the world we live in today, it isn’t as overlooked as it was when these where filmed or even redone. the #metoo movement really did change a lot no matter how you feel about it

I absolutely love the original Sleepaway Camp. Always have. I do understand the reasons for those who don't. Especially the lady who plays the aunt, very strange. But that gives it charm for me. The sequels are okay. The second movie with the plunging that one camper into the outhouse gave me nightmares for years. The video store I went to had plastic, see-through columns they stored the rentals on. If I saw through the column and got a visual of the back of the VHS I would feel very disturbed. I got over it and watched it again in the mid 90s.

Sleepaway Camp 13/10
Sleepaway Camp 2 8/10
Sleepaway Camp 3 6/10

Yes, if I enjoy a movie that much I give it three extra points.

As for the Jeepers Creepers movies and that situation. I understand the sentiment of disgust that the director gives everyone. I watched those two movies before I heard about what he did during the making of his first movie. I'm appalled by such behavior, but I separate the art from the artist. How many movies and how much music do we listen to that could have a criminal in its production? Probably every single band and film production has people working within it that has done something criminal. If you decide to stop watching and listening to movies and music because of the crimes those behind it have been charged with, you might as well never watch another movie and never listen to any music ever again. What do you feel when you hear Wagner being played when a certain European leader back in 1933-1945 obsessed over the mythology within the music and did what they did? It's and endless battle and that's one I won't participate.

Yes, I think about what that director did every time I watch one of their movies. But I enjoy the positive output they created outside of the behavior that is definitely repulsive.

I could reword myself and clarify a bit, I suppose.

When it comes to the Sleepaway Camp trilogy, I would be inclined to purchase 4k releases of these regardless. In my opinion, the original is, and always will be, a favorite because it approached the genre in a more serious and traditional summer camp horror flick with some unconventional twists and unexpected turns, especially with the ending. My enjoyment of this movie continues to this day. The two sequels took more of a comedy/horror turn, which isn't my favorite kind of turn, but I would still buy them.

I would be inclined to purchase these titles, along with the Jeepers Creepers titles as well regardless of the #metoo echo chamber. I was speaking more to the decision to offer these titles or not. If it's Shout that decides to offer them, great! If not, hopefully someone else will, and I will support whoever does for the simple fact that I'm not going to be told what I should buy or NOT buy based upon some "movement" or anything else. It's my choice to have abandoned the entire Marvel franchise as much as it is my choice to buy these titles.

I will support a studio that flies in the face of this and chases the almighty dollar if that's the view some will take for situations like this. I would personally applaud that label for their decision and quite literally put my money where my mouth is.

i definitely can respect that, i appreciate the re-wording to express your opinion.

but i grew up watching Sleepaway Camp 2&3 on chiller so they definitely hold a very soft spot.. i just hope some label gives them the 4k treatment, they deserve it. i feel they’ve gained a cult following more and more lately, so we’ll just have to see and be hopeful

personally, i wish labels would let us vote on the movies or atleast listen to what the consumers want more. i can’t believe non of them have went to give the Texas Chainsaw 03 & 06 the 4k treatment either

Would it be more financially feasible and viable to release the Sleepaway Camp films as a 4K boxset release since the sequels sold poorly on their own?

you’d think, you get the best of both worlds for ones who prefer the original or the sequels.. i assume since the sequels shot up in popularity compared to the original release they’d sell good either way. however, that’s just my 2 cents..
