I'm torn. I like John Carpenter and I really appreciate what Shout is doing... but I never have been able to sit all the way through the Fog without being bored. I can't explain it... it just never has drawn me in.

I started a PD horror thread for anyone who wants to talk about Public Domain horror movies and discuss the ones already available, so feel free to drop by. Theres a list but I was too bored to finish it. I will fix it up with the known releases later.

I can understand, I was disappointed by the original Hills Have Eyes and I'm a fan of Wes Craven.

I like Wes Craven too. One thing that irks me about him though is his voice when he's doing an audio commentary. I can never get through a single commentary of his. He always sounds so bored, dull and strangely irritated by the fact that he's doing it.

Maybe that's just his voice and it's not intentional but that's how it sounds to me and I personally find it off putting while trying to appreciate what he has to say.

It's like anyone trying to lecture you while they're pissed off at you. All you want to do is leave the room and stop listening to them.

I agree with all of what you said.

I was a huge fan of Halloween so when THE FOG came out, I was first in line at the theater. I sat through the whole thing and was completely unmoved. It has to be among the least horrifying horror films I've ever seen. What a snoozer.

That being said, I still feel oddly compelled to buy the Blu-ray. With all of those extras, maybe someone can explain why the films was so dull.

The Fog is one of my favourite horror films and this is probably the Bluray release I am Los exited for this year. Can't wait, and glad to see they are delivering some great extras!

Actually, I never saw it that way. I simply find him to be fascinating and considering he was a humanities professor, he tends to have interesting things to say.

The Fog is one of my favorite Carpenters' and one of the best ghost stories ever. I saw it on opening day in a sold out theatre and I remember the audience was very into it...and very frightened and on edge....just my 2 cents.

Wasn't Carpenter unhappy with the original film a bit?

...Yyyyeah. That's pretty much the knee-jerk "It's not Halloween!" history it's been saddled with since the day it came out, for being an atmospheric seacoast-lighthouse ghost story instead of a slasher film. We Halloween III fans already take enough guff from Carpenter fans expecting the same movie over and over.
Now that it's on disk, however, how about maybe, y'know, watching it as its OWN film, out of historical context?

I really like Halloween III, and love my Scream Factory Blu-ray of that movie!

But the Fog... I've never been a ghost story fan I guess... and that's basically the core of the Fog I think. More blasphemy I suppose, but I also never cared for Poltergeist either. Same sort of "meh" from me.

I will say, though, about the Fog... I kind of like that by the end of the movie you are kind of rooting for the ghosts. That part of the movie worked for me.
